I'm not talking about the VESA standard modes. I'm talking about detection of modes.
To my understanding, Windows asks the monitor for the best modes and then uses them.
XFree should do the same thing. This would eliminate manually entering modes.
(Ask yourself, have you ever seen a windows user enter in modes manually? )
What's this about the V2OS Filesystem?

V2OS under GPL

It sounds similar to ext2 design idea.
Can anyone comment on this? How does the fs stand against ext2?
It might be helpful to add V2OS filesystem support to linux to create compatibitity between the os'es. I suspect the V2OS fs would be better suited towards embedded devices.
Yes we did. IIRC it was in the sum of billions in "loans" (which we pretty much expect not to see returned). Oh and by the way, that's only the US officially. We're not even talking about the IMF, basically a US funded organization. We've also helped in other ways like giving them economic advice.
They're not seeing it because we can't feed all of em. Even if we wanted to, we're not powerful enough to bring their quality of life up to par. We can't even do that with our own homeless.
But the point is that we've helped. Without it, they'd probably be in a worse situation.
The medical issue is an outgrowth of their poverty; I dont see how that's relevent except to show that the majority of americans are unaware of these problems. The majority doesn't haveta be aware... let them be ignorant. Even if they were aware, i suspect it wouldn't increase the help we're giving them signifigantly.
Sure, they can blame the west for their problems, but they would be doing so out of ignorance. Sure they lost a lot of money in the cold war, but their govenment was going down in mismanagement anyways. They never had it good to start with.
Back to my point, his ignorance is what we haveta be afraid of.
Yea, it's essentially a $300-$400 computer neatly packaged and targeted for people not as geeky as/.ers.
I'd build my own too if they charge more than 500 bucks, but at least this way other less technically inclined people will have more access to this sort of stuff.
As stated earlier, this is no different from the http User agent.
(Carmack has done a good job in explaining this as i was skeptical at first too.)
Second: If you're beta testing this game, doesn't ID deserve to get *some* information from you? Even though the data collection it isn't stated in an idiot-proof manner, I'd say it's a fair warning.
No way! I tested mozilla for a while and in the later versions (before and after M11) I could break it within 30 minutes. (Sometimes it segfaulted in less than 10)
think twice about this one. I have one and the fact that it doesnt play au's in hardware has caused me a lot of trouble. (Some sw for unix dont include a linear option)
Sometimes the sound quality doesnt seem right and i've heard of skipping.
You might want to go somewhere else if you want more than just mp3s using xmms.
Youre right... there's nothing wrong with using factorization as the idea is so simple yet powerful that no one will likely prove P=NP. We can estimate how infeasable a brute force attack would be.
I'd be more hesitant to use quantum crypto since it depends on the uncertanty principle, which is still a theory.

I was thinking earlier about what would happen if there was a suit... Do you think a class action suit would be possible?
Since by violating GPL, you are violating *everyone's* right to see the code, something the developer promised when they took on the source.
Just a thought
It is scary what an impoverished nation will listen to. That's why the us has been trying really hard to nurse russia back to health.
You'd think that after we've sent them so much financial help and food that they wouldn't bite the hand that feeds them.
we should be able to moderate /. articles out of the main page
Anytime you put something artificial in someone, it seems that you increase the risk of cancer.
can any doctors comment on this?
I looked this up earlier to figure out what was up with the modeline crap.
To the best of my knowledge, Windows basically uses the VESA standard for getting what we call modelines from the monitor itself.
Instead of writing all this crap, lets work on making xfree compatible with this standard.
Anyone know if this is going to be included in Xfree 4.0?
Youre completely right.
Work on a new unix acl system might be good too.
Yea, u'd be wasting time by porting it to gtk.
Even if you're running gnome/e, you can still run konqueror right?
Better spend that time on improving xmms, writing themes, *documentation*, ect.

It seems that Alpha/Beta/release notation means the same thing as the stable/unstable as in the linux kernel.
It's just a different way of labeling them, perhaps simpler than the odd/even number that sometimes confuses newbies.
i agree. Usually the two groups can reconcile and find something to benefit the project in whole.
But for some projects, if the maintainer isn't capable (or absent), a fork is usually necessary.
by version 8.x it's going to be fully compatible with netmeeting and other programs like that.
(I believe the standard was H. 232?)
It uses GSM compression which compresses it to something like 10-15kbits/s.
So if youre looking for voip, this is the way to go.
Instead of bitching, go download the nightly release and do some bughunting/verifying.
You'll find that mozilla is really beginning to move beyond it's alpha state into something usable. Now just for the bugs...
>I'm a little tired of hearing OSS advocates >telling me that IE can't touch Mozilla, because
>Mozilla will be awesome real real soon.
It already is awesome. It just needs to work out some bugs.
Go play with the nightly build!
Im running Mandrake 6.0, based on Rh 6.0.
When I got the RPM it didn't work properly, saying that it had an unresolved symbol in libreadline.
I made myself an RPM from the SRPM and it works properly now.
i like to hear myself think... it works better that way. ANY music can become a distraction

is there something like cthuga, except as an xmms plugin? that would be very nice. i know winamp has something like this.
fetchmail doesnt seem like the most high profile os project. I haven't needed to use it yet, but i've read about it.
I'd like to see figures on the linux kernel, samba, gnome, kde and other projects before I pass judgement on the scalability of os.
ok... but if you need betatesters, drop me a line
