The reason I don't buy PC World, or any of those mags is usually because looking at the front cover, it seems that it's filled with articles about stuff I already know about... that they're made for "newbies"
Another reason is that even the most interesting of articles seems to take a real "media" approach to stories... for example.. if there was an article on mp3s. It wouldn't just speak in geek terms. I want a mag thats full of techno babble and written by geeks that doesnt take such a media view on issues. I'd rather read something I can relate to than something objective.
Shift is an excellent mag. It's made by our generation.. for our generation. This is the one I spend my money on. Not sure if ya americans have the privalege or not but if it's on your stands, give it a try.
I really enjoyed that book... I picked it up at a book sale for $5 or something... and read it in 2 days (couldnt put it down) It was indeed very insightful... but not negative. I'm not going to buy the book "NetSlaves" it seems to me that theres a danger in writing a book when you're pissed off... you might just get published.. and then the world see's all your negativity. Well it seems to me that this book (Netslaves) will explode with negativity. I have 3 semesters left on my MIS degree and I just don't need something like this influencing me. The world is NOT a bad place.. yes there are greedy people, and yes there are backstabbers... but deal with it. You get what you put into it... and don't forget this is survival of the fittest. We're all greedy (including the Netslaves authors or they wouldnt have written the book) It just seems to me that 2 pissed off guys wrote a book because they wanted to tell their side of the story. Well maybe people just didnt like them because of their... oh I dunno... negativity. But yes.. if you're looking for a good book about the life, and feelings of a programmer... Microserfs is a great read. (it was recently mentioned in an article called "Myths of the e-factory" in Newsweek's special "Careers 2000" publication) btw... the article in Newsweek is quite insightful as well... and not negative... just states the facts and quotes various workers in silicon valley. These companies are great, lets not forget that... I mean you could work for some old skool hitler boss in a "ladder" type environment... but we have the chance to work at places where if we don't want to take the stairs... we can take the slide! And wear khakis to work! This is a wonderful time with wonderful companies coming forward... lets not forget that. I can only hope to find a place somewhere like this when I'm done my degree.
I find it unbeleivable that the essay is even available to read So this kid got out of jail because they found that he is in fact mentally stable... now watch his essay be acted out by some not-so-stable 11th grader somewhere in the US because it's getting "plubicity" Doesnt the american media learn anything?
and my 2 cents worth... well... better safe than sorry right? Good job on getting this kid checked out.... don't forget how many of those shootings may have been prevented (ie.. kid taking a gun to school the day before... sent home with a tiny suspension) yes.. lets get these kids checked out... I'm not an american parent and I even think this is a good idea... I understand the "rights" issue but come on people... lets be practical... and as the story stated... you don't get off on "your rights" crap in airports when you yell "BOMB" as a joke... and for good reason.
people may have rights... but so do I and the government's and police's job is to protect me and my rights... good job system:)
If this is referring to banner sites... the author of this article has it all wrong.
If you log into a site to download mp3s and you find yourself faced with the words "go to http://blabla and click on the banner for the password" ummm.. thats not exactly forcing you to watch porn... if you want in that site bad enough... you'll go click on the sex banner on the web but it's not as if someones forcing you to watch an hour long mpg as this article makes it sound like.
theres a real problem of people writing articles on internet related issues that don't know anything outside their Outlook Express.
The article says sites are using mp3s to force users to watch porn... that is juat all wrong
the article should say... sites are using porn to make a couple bucks off people that want their mp3s by using banners. Now theres an article that I would have a little respect for the author for writing.
you people are forgetting that they're not going to put these machines beside a pepsi machine
These machines are going to be very strategically placed.
Think of this... the campus here has a population of 45,000 (students, professors, staff) Coke bought the rights to the campus for the next.. oh I dunno 20 years or something.. which means.. NO WHERE on the whole huge campus can pepsi be sold
They have done this in many places... and what a brilliant idea from a profit perspective (from a consumer prospective it sucks) but just remember.. they know what they're doing.. they're not gonna stick these things beside Pepsi machines... competition isnt a factor
I was talking more about the "confessions of real women" and "sex secrets" part of the issues.. but you have such a valid point and clear definition of "cosmo" I cant help but sit here and grin.
and as for "old fashioned girls"... cooking.. cleaning... wiping your ass well I'm not even going to go there... but in that one sentence.. you lost my respect. well where shall I begin... "Dont waste your time on geek girls" yeah boys.. take his advice.. and then when your wife divorces you because you wont give her the attention you give your computer... you'll want someone who "understands you... you and all your passions combined" When you want affection... if it's meant to be.. she wont be coding and posting on slashdot.. she'll recognize this and let go of the keyboard. in a nutshell.. Don't you want someone who would get excited when you come home with 50 feet of cat5 and say "Lets wire this house to the tilt" Or do you want someone that would say "wtf is that... you're not putting those ugly wires all over my house" Bottom line.. in the long run... you need to be able to share your main passion with that other person.
next item: "I've gone out with more than a few "hot babes" in my time and I generally found them to be more trouble than they were worth." This is saying a few things... if you're good looking.. you are not relationship material. Whether its baggage.. or conceit, or a lack of brains.... People see me and assume I dont know shit about computers... and when I tell them im an information systems major their jaw drops. You'll learn more than you ever wanted to know. Oh.. and don't stereotytpe people. If you see a geek girl or a playboy model.. dont remember anything you have read here... find out for yourself if you would enjoy that person.
Sorry this is so long but arrrgh... you really got my panties in a bunch:)
I am taking my corporate law class this semester, and surprisingly enough... we are learning things we can apply. He has two options.. he could go the patent route (I'm not sure how much money this would cost) or.. a simple contract. Contracts are your best evidence in court:) To have a lawyer write up a contract.. just tell them the situation.. and that you wish to show this prototype to firms without fear that they will rip it. This contract could be used for each firm he presents to... simply have them sign it stating that they will not use any ideas they see in the presentation to profit. Permission to videotape one presentation might be a good idea. With that and the contract... you would be safe.
Remember.. your greatest tool is the ability to sue. And your greatest tool in a lawsuit is evidence. If someone rips you off.. dont fear.. just double what you think you could have made off of it and begin.:) (man.. my law proffessor makes this sound like too much fun)

just because my student loan hardly covers my tuition + rent for the year... let alone a copy of Office 2000... and MS does absolutly NOTHING to support university students learning... does not mean I am some advocate of organized crime, or I am "stealing" MS profits. They're not going to profit off me anyway... because I would either use a pirated copy, or no copy at all. However... with my continued use of software and education... hell.. If slashdot decided they've had enuf and these guys want to spend the rest of their life in a hut on a beach, well they'd sell off the domain. And could probably get much more than Network Solution's 70 bones for it. why? well because of slashdot dot org's "goodwill" (If you are not familiar with this term, try to get the idea of a goodwill store out of your head)
The funny thing about accounting today... is that very few accountants have the knowledge to implement this information technology revolution into their number crunching. Where do you put a domain on a financial statement? Well theres really only two options... tangible assets, or intangible assets.
I spent a good two weeks pondering this until it made me so confused I gave up. A domain is obviously not tangible... you can't reach out and touch it, or anything on the net for that matter, but should it be included with patents, etc? I certainly hope not.

ok and this raises a question I struck onto my accounting professor last semester. I asked him if he would consider domains to be intangible or tangible assets? I can't belive you have posted all those emails for everyone to read... like we're supposed to read them and feel so sorry for all these lame dorks that think they are being treated so cruel in school. All you kids want my pity? screw that. Its life, get over it, and here's a little tip... the "cool" preople get treated cruel too. You just don't see it because you don't have the guts to hang out with them. Everyone gets treated cruel... so I THINK I"VE HEARD ENOUGH ABOUT WAAA WAAAA EVERYONE HATES ME I HAVE NO FRIENDS.
as for the whole point of slashdot's thread... that this whole media thing over littleton has caused all these geeks to be discriminated against in the past week, well you know what... thats their own problem. To the people who wrote in emails about being dragged into offices because they play doom and quake, and they don't like the fact that they are being pulled in to be talked to.... deal with it. Use some communication skills and simply tell them that you understand their concern but that you are not a threat and you want to make that clear. Don't jump on the "I have rights, I'm gonna fight you on this one" bandwagon... don't be so $^%#ing dramatic.
As for the email sent in about the girl who showed up at school in a trenchcoat and whined over her rights being violated because they told her she couldn't wear it.... ARE YOU STUPID OR SOMETHING?
HELLO PEOPLE.... 13 STUDENTS WERE KILLED LAST WEEK while they were in the "safest" place possible. Don't be stupid and wear your trenchcoat to school the next day just to be dramatic and prove some kind of point... have some %$#^ing respect.
I can't belive some of the crap I'm reading. You "understand" the killer's feelings? Give me a break... the are murderers... case CLOSED. I can't belive how many people are justifying what they did. People are dead... DEAD... as in never coming back.
THE COUNTRY HAS A RIGHT TO BE $##@ING PARANOID... if you play quake and people around you are paranoid because of it, sit them down and talk to them... don't get so defensive... jeezus
NO ONE... NOTHING is to blame except for those parents that didn't notice the 30 some bombs and guns in the house or the fact that their child was depressed. IF YOU ARE A PARENT.. FOR GODS SAKE, TALK TO YOUR KIDS.
now go ahead an moderate me slashdot

FYI Yes he did write it... if he snipped it, don't you think the original person would be saying "hey I wrote that" anyways, if you were familiar with his net lingo, you'd know it was him He's getting flamed for it... why would he lie about writing it? ok people... he wrote this as a joke... let it go... you need a sense of humour
= gay
he meant gay to mean lame...
why are you so offended by this term? has it hit just a little too close to home?

hey! why don't you come here and say that!
leave him alone... hammy is cool... what were you doing when you were 16 years old? probably letting corporate tv morph your brain into a conformed pile of useless shit
hammy is on my icq.. and all I have to say is if you saw half the stuff he comes up with, you'd have respect for him... I fear him personally... I can only imagine how good he'll be with computers when he's 25... he's 8 years younger than me and knows 8 times as much stuff than I do
so if you want to bash him... you have to deal with me...
