Believe me, this is not about naming schemes... the previous poster was right: its about control.
I think that Drepper may have acted inappropriately... but maybe he was trying to call attention to something that is seriously wrong.
See, I don't know what Stallman is trying to achieve... but if it was anything like altruism and freedom... then he wouldn't be so damn pushy. Look-- Linus isn't really the one who names the system.... we are! Linux is the system name because we choose to call it that. If we preferred, we would call it a GNU system... but too many of us get that uneasy feeling when RMS says-- "don't call it what you wnat, put my name on it!" (ie GNU/Linux = Stallmanix). It just makes me uncomfortable when a guy ONLY likes free software if its through the FSF and gnu.org... (ie, Stallman's kingdom).
I agree with most of you... mandrake has a wonderful installation, and great configurability. It's gui tools are the best in the linux world.
The thing is.... it's still meaningless because the whole package isn't there yet. You've got to have applications... ie, MS Office.... and all those other wonderful little programs we all use at work. Despite linux being a better OS... and Mandrake having a great gui.... you can't get people to abandon all of their applications.
Oh, but there is one thing the author forgot: all the millions (billions) of people who can't afford MS products... like MS Office, etc.
Lets remember for a second that most of the world hasn't made their decision on the desktop, and desktop software. I guarantee Windows is waaayy too US-centric and too costly to appeal to non-americans. Linux, on the other hand, is being developed for... and by citizens.
So... this guy MIGHT have it right... maybe the US has made its decision about a desktop environment (see US weights and measures standard).... but the rest of the world is smarter than that. The best bang for the buck is no-question: LINUX
Basically R&D is a Good Thing (Tm). There are many benfits to having a polymeric superconductor-- why? Because, as you may know, superconductors have not been widely accepted for practial applications... part of the reason for this is that all High-temp superconductors are brittle ceramics, but a polymer is highly formable and moldable.
If you can perhaps learn something about poymeric-based superconductors... then maybe you can finally get the wonderful benefits of resistance-less conduction to be practical.
That's what this is all about right? Taking the steps necessary to customize a human being. I'm sorry, but whether you believe in souls or not... whether you're religeous or not, this is an issue that affects everybody very deeply.
My basic opinion on the matter is that... I just don't know how I feel about human cloning. I mean, its an issue that is incredibly pervading into all aspects of our lives, and its ramifications are totally unknown. But here's my response to your above post: play nice!!
People may, or may not be religious.... but their opinion is still a very important issue. You can't just block out a person's opinion simply because you think their belief system is stupid. Their belief system works for them... and at this point... you have no more experience or knowledge than they do.
Give everybody a fair chance because this issue affects them just as much as it does you... and no one person (thank god) is the authority here.
Open Cascade has put out really nice screenshots, but their business model is centered around support. Which is fine by me, but its really a pain to use --its a nuissance! I mean, I think that it still needs a little work on the UI.
I find that for such a smart man, his grasp of economics and politics is shaky at best, and downright non-existant at worst.
Okay look... He is definitely not arguing a point-by-point economical debate - THAT's clear.
Brin is making (perhaps a little too) sweeping generalizations... but then he calls his own potential fallacy. But basically, look at history:
Rise of Egyption Empire:
over abuse of isreli slaves causes an escape
Rise of the Roman Empire:
fractioning of the leadership: Roman, Byzantine, etc.
lower class, and localize unrest
Fall of Roman Empire
do while ((Rich no longer have to fight to get rich) && (Spoiled children make bad decisions))
Thats basically his point.
Still.... I agree that most of us think taxes are too high... and they ARE. But like Brin indicates, the rich recieve many more benefits of government and should be expected to pay more. It is the successful middle-class that revolted from England, and later wrote the Best Constitution of its time. Nowadays, we've extended our freedoms to women and to non-whites (finally), but we have to maintain that same socio-economic balance (that fine diamond shape) because the balance is our livelihood!
We have a tendency to criticize quickly and then forget to complement. I think most of us agree that unless competition is protected, the merger should not go through.
I know we squabble about the issues surrounding the periphery, but lets please thank those deserving the credit for doing their job correctly: preserving justice and freedom.
There is nothing that M$ can do about naked PCs- they just know that it hurts their sales and they want to present a "working solution" to shareholders.
It won't make a difference anyway 'cuz vendors know they won't be liable for selling clean hardware. Unless....... did somebody already patent this idea?;)
The whole issue here, again, is "preservation of intellectual property."
For those readers out there who are still making up their minds on the issue:
It is irrational, and probably not just for a record label to maintain ownership of a work of art forever. These laws are in place to protect the song's artist, not to provide them and their label with an unending source of income - that's unjust!
In inudustry, if you make a component, or a device, product, etc. You can maintain intellectual property for 10 or 17 years... depending. In the music businesss... its forever! Does that seem logical? No.
We should limit the rights of intellectual property for musical works to something like 3-5 years MAXIMUM. Last summer, 'N Sync made close to 70 Million dollars in concerts. So you can't tell me the artists will go broke! Nobody intends to take away their right to make money from cds and concert shows. It just about the justice to be able to copy someone elses work - it is legal! (at the very least, after some finite time period)
Here's the thing: I have no desire to make Windows any better with MY brain... (not that I'm certain I could do it anyway, but that's not the point). See, I know that Windows is not the quality product that I support, and it never will be. I could elaborate, but briefly, it doesn't have the functionality, the stability, nor the open source background that Linux has, and it never will.
And since I feel that Linux and open source coding is the way to go because it is better and viable, then I feel I have no business supporting the wrong solution.
Microsoft is only using YOUR brain and your most dear ability (uncompensated honest help) so that they can turn around and market/ sell it on that shoddy system.

I'm just wondering... what percent of the slashdotters have switched over to 2.4.x from 2.2.x
I haven't because I don't want to bother upgrading my whole installation.... or worry about any potential conflicts

The article states the proposed benefits.
