HTML is merely a markup language with no actual resemblence or connection to progamming languages. But for learning the absolute basic concepts of programming, I think a nice launchpad might be a good Javascript tutorial. It delivers immediate results, there's no compiler necessary, and she can learn a few of the basics of variable manipulation and program design before moving onto more useful development environments.
10 cans sounded sensationalist at first, but then i thought about it, that's 120 oz of soda. that's less than two 64 oz 7-11 big gulps, which i seem to remember being very popular in high school and college. granted, that excludes ice from the equation, and i'm guessing that 120 oz of pure sugar water is a little high for an average, but it's gotta be pretty common.
this is what i first assumed about tivo when i bought one nearly 2 years ago: that you simply plug the cable feed directly into the box and an internal tuner would change channels.
the actual process is far more low tech, however. tivo contains no cable tuner, so it intercepts the analog signal sent between your cable provider's box and your television. it changes the channel via it's own "remote" (either a serial connection plugged into the back of the box, or, for the unlucky many, an IR transmitter i had to tape onto the front of the cable box), and records content whenever it's scheduled to do so. tivo is effectively your own private couch potato.
i've been looking for a good logical distinction between law and theory for a while -- this gives me good fodder for arguments with my misinformed creationist friends.
if david letterman were to write a smart, fascinating physics book, it'd be "The God Particle: If the Universe is the Answer, What is the Question?" a wonderful, funny, interesting read that covers some of the coolest physics concepts i've ever run across. could not recommend more highly.
