The human (and AFAIK most other animals) have a hugely higher pixel density towards the middle of the field of vision. When you think about it you actually build the image of a scene in your head by "running your eye over it".
Most of the resolution will only have to be at the center therefore you could get a lot bigger "bang for your pixel buck" than if you were building a camera or monitor.
If this is the case then the union won't last very long. This is because the company that employs it's members will probably wither and die.
My experience with unions has been from the point of view of a relatively new industry (electronics)and an incompetent and hostile management. This is where unions excell IMO.
However for people of a programmers or similar ilk I think that a guild or society (eg Lawyer)
would probably be more applicable. This would
probably fix the mediocrity tendencies of unions
(which are sometimes needed in non-skilled shops!)
but provide a protection mechanism for members by ensuring that only the Guild( or Society) supporting companies will get the best people.
Could someone please tell me how or why a government agency should get a patent. My understanding of the reason for patents is to ensure that the developer gets an income for their hard work. So what the he..ck is a government agency doing applying for a patent??
I'd never even heard of Neil Gaiman until I read Good Omens. Terry Pratchett is the man for that sort of humour. The Discworld series is very very funny.
The assertion that copying music is piracy uses the same logic that M$, Adobe and their ilk use against open source software. The way I see the open source movement is that programmers are paid for programming not for selling copies of programs. So if a company wants a new DB it pays a programmer to write it. Eric Raymond says that the vast majority of programmers don't make their living from selling copies of their code.
The same with musicians... they should be paid to play music not to sell copies of recordings.. the way concerts are done nowadays a (popular) musician could make 6 figures on one concert.
The way that the music industry works now means that only a very small subset of musicians can make a good living out of music. This mp3 way of doing things means that smaller bands/artists could publicise their work to get people to their concerts so they could make money.
All we need is a mechanism to find the "good" musicians from the "bad" so we don't have to wade our way thru 1e6 tracks of cr@p:)
I live in the South Island od New Zealand and we have a few native species of penguins. The most common is a species called little blues. They are about as big as a small chicken. Just recently there was a current affairs story on TV where somebody was having serious problems with penguins nesting under their house. Apparently their chicks make a lot of noise, and they smell quite strongly of fish. I don't think that these birds would be much fun to have as a pet as I think they have a tendency to nip. Also in NZ I think it's illegal to have tham as pets as they are very strongly protected, another problem those people in the TV story were having as, to move them required special permission from the authorities.

Well it works for lawyers and engineers.

I think that if Metcalf's comments were posted in the coments on slashdot they would probably be moderated down to flamebait....ignore them
