Perhaps instead of sending in the tanks, we could just dedicate a few dozen Satelittes in LEO broadcasting 4G Internet across the Middle East. And instead of AK47's we can carpet bomb them with 4G wi-fi Modems and cheap Tablets? Give them the tools and let them sort themselves out. Knowledge, not weapons brought the West out of the dark ages, perhaps we should bring the knowledge (rather than bombs) to save the Middle East?
Maybe your bank has a poor implementation, Hong Kong has had a universal contactless payment through the Oyster card since the 90's. We've had it here in Australia for a couple of years and it works well (I use it every day for everything - packet of gum, glass of beer, groceries etc, and am starting to phase out my wallet). When the bugs are ironed out in your system, this will be the way transactions are done.
Always been my pet hate the inconsistency with the Apps listed in the Start Menu. Like iOS/Andriod, an app should always ever only come with one icon, and any additional features should be found within the app. I don't need an uninstall shortcut, I can do that elsewhere, and I don't need a help icon, I should find that within the app. Clean up the Start Menu to just list one icon per app, and don't take up the whole screen and I'll be happy.
Also go back to making the Start Menu as big as it needs to be to display all icons without scrolling. That extra click each time is driving me insane.
It's kind of odd that Linux might finally succeed as the dominate desktop OS eventually - because eventually a desktop OS might not really be a viable retail product anymore.
Except in business... which is where most of the desktop action happens... and is why Linux has failed so miserably in this space for the last 20+ years...
Can only speak from personal experience, but most people I encounter read either of the main rags online as a way to pass the time at work. I'm a contractor so work in many different office, and every office I go I see either Fairfax (smh.com.au) or News (news.com.au) on screen of worker bees. I can only imagine how many man-hours are wasted on this activity every day across the country.
At what point is there too much information?
We all have TB of storage at home with shit we never watch or read again, yet we still keep it. I can only imagine the cost of all this data hording and question at what point is the cost of all the infrastructure to maintain it, no longer worth the effort?
If twenty years from now all the records are lost because no one can decode.docx files properly then it's not their problem but the problem of the lazy IT guys.
We're used to these ridiculous arguments from Linux zealots. Do tell, what scenario are you expecting where this would happen that can't be mitigated with a little common sense?
Open file formats seem to vastly over-rated in your universe. I run Libre Office and have never had a problem opening propriety MS Office files. I'm pretty sure any lazy IT guy will also have a DVD of Office 2010 lying around just in case. Not such a disaster really, if you think about it just a little bit...
That's the key. The office culture changes and people don't do things the Windows way anymore. When new workers come in the work culture is so different they immediately see it is nothing like their old job.
Problem is you can't just change one business. Most people average only a few years between employers. By knowing the Windows way you make yourself a whole lot more employable. And by sticking with the Windows way, the cost of hiring new staff is far simpler and cheaper.
Incumbency has huge, huge benefits...
I don't buy that Windows is inherently more "office ready" than Linux for the vast majority of office users, all else being equal. The thing is, all else isn't equal. I do buy the idea that Windows is heavily entrenched and has a huge "incumbent" advantage, one that is going to persist for a long, long time, whether we like that idea or not.
Seems to be the main point all the Linux fundamentalists can't understand. Incumbency has huge benefits regardless of any other argument.
It's neither democratic nor undemocratic. When an organisation auctions off surplus stock their primary goal is not giving you a good deal, they just want the stock gone. By auctioning less lots, with larger amounts, they will go a lot quicker with less fuss. Even if they get 10% of the market rate it's all profit.
If you've ever been to a govt auction, this is pretty much standard practice.
Gull-wing doors require less side clearance than standard doors.
What about height clearance? In a sports car that already has a low roof it wouldn't be a problem, but I can't imagine the same is true for a high riding SUV type vehicle.
Comparing some dork who CHOOSES to break social norms to discrimination against race or sexual preference shows how ridiculous your argument is. You can always take the fucking things off. Just like wearing skinny jeans or a hipster beard, you choose this path and therefore I am quite entitled to judge you based of your (poorly thought out) choices.
But I guess the point is, if he was never born these things would still exist ( a rose by any other name etc). Whereas if Franz Ferdinand or Hitler weren't born, the world would probably be a completely different place. That is how I would define influence
You seem to be underestimating the influence of Jesus.
And you seem to underestimate the influence all the previous religions had before Christianity plagiarised them. Jesus is a mere side note in the human story. All the principles you claim to own were around before your cult was invented, and will exist long after it ceases to exist.
It's just another stupid list skewed by bias. Charles Linneaus? I'm man enough to admit I've never heard of him (yeah I skipped Biology), and I'll bet my right nut no-one I know has either. I hate religion as much as anyone, but you'd be hard pressed to go past the influence Jesus, Mohammed, and Buddha have had on modern human history (if we want to be really objective we might have to include Zeus, Odin, Ra and all those other weirdos)...
It's not just what your were brought up with, it is about efficient and ergonomic input. You simply can't beat a keyboard and mouse for that. I spend 12 hours a day on PC/Laptop without issue. I can last about 15 minutes on a phone/tablet due to the mechanical overhead of a touch UI.
Same goes for a multi-window desktop over the one-app-only-at-a-time desktop. For productivity, traditional windows (small w) beats the IOS/Win8 style hands down.
It's not about apps, it's about content, and more importantly potability of content. All my photos, music, movies etc are files. When I reimage my Windows PC I copy them over and play/view them. If I want them on my Tablet I copy them there and play/view them. If I want htem on my new phone I simply copy them and play/view them. But when my daughter wants them on her iPod she's shit out of luck. Without using setting up an iTunes library on a computer somewhere then managing and syncing the library it's just a pain in the arse. And even when they are there you are restricted to only certain behaviour that Apple deems is worthy. Sure if you buy in the Apple ecosystem it's easier, but I want to be able chop and change between whatever device I like without having to commit to an "ecosystem". Windows and Linux/Android device allow this, Apple doesn't. Fuck Apple.

If c) is "well written non-standard apps", then there's no reason you can't have all three.

You mean to tell me that someone actually paid $35M for Myspace?

How? If he never existed what would be different? I consider Ghenghis Khan or Franz Ferdinand to much more influential on human history.

Dude, give up. If you are unsure where Asia is I suggest you engage your brain and Google it...
Do you consider a Christian to be Asian? You're question makes no sense. There is no fixed correlation between religion and geographic location.

Yes but in case you haven't paid attention lately, Apple are a technology company, not an antique dealer...
