I think his point is more that it's people that are the problem, not the technology. If we suddenly switched over to ipv6 today there'd just be the same asshats screwing things up with spam, virii, etc. Just because there'll be a billion IP addresses for every man woman and child on earth doesn't mean that the internet won't suffer the same problems as it does now.
Is screwing with mime types what MS really wants to do? Don't they have enough problems with not obeying mime types anyway? I seem to remember that IE has/had some ugly bug where you could send a.exe files through with a mimetype of text/html and it would happily ignore the html and execute the file. Or maybe the other way around, or something like that.
I'm still a bit unsure as how allowing me to watch DVDs under Linux is destroying the rights of the consumers and no doubt, the economy of the western world.
First thing I do in the morning is hit userfriendly, gpf-comics, dilbert, sluggy, pvponline, sinfest, reallifecomics, and then slashdot for my morning SCO fix. Personally I think that the SCO articles are really starting to establish themselves as fantasically funny, even amidst the other talented humourists I read every day.
Actually based on my SO it's google and auto-form fill fields. She will go to google (via the home button in IE), type in the start of something, even a domain name, select it when the IE "remember what I typed in" dropdown drops down, then clicks from there.
"We're fighting for the right in the industry to be able to make a living selling software," McBride told the audience. He compared this right to the ability "to send your children to college" and "to buy a second home."
(emphasis mine) Well, I don't have my first home yet, so I guess extortion won't help me will it?
As far as the gov't raping you, aren't they doing that already? Do you seriously believe that you and your NRA gun toting rednecks would actually be able to do more than create a disturbance? Don't people who think that the gov't is out to get them end up doing things like killing children in federal buildings and get called lunatics and murderers?
Yes people kill people with guns. People are generally stupid, aggressive and with knee jerk reactions to things. Take away the guns from the people and they won't find it as easy to kill each other.
Please don't give me the "you can kill someone with a knife or a stick or a baseball bat if you wanted to! guns are no different" argument either, it's a bit tired and stupid to compare beating someone to death with a baseball bat to simply pulling the trigger of a gun in a moment of anger when some asshat cuts you off on the highway.
Cost I'm willing to bet is more the case than some grand conspiracy by the IT world. Sure they cost less to support, and increase productivity, but when the initial outlay is more than a compatible x86 box, the people in charge of budgets start screaming. No one thinks about the saved cost in the future, it's all about now.
IE: Should I spend $3k (CND) to buy a swanky new apple powerbook (or more for a new g5?), or should I spend $1000 and upgrade my current x86 system to be a pretty kick ass gaming box, which can also act as a high powered linux server? Pretty easy choice if you see my bank account.
Sure in a year or so I'll want to upgrade again, or I'll have a MB or DIMM or hard drive go and will have to buy a new part, but that's ok. Because the cost is down the road, and therefor, doesn't exist.
Note: the last sentance was intended to be sarcasic or ironic, depending on your view.
Wasn't this the subject of a famous memo about a year and a half ago, when they were spending 10 months doing nothing bug security? Good job guys. Interesting enough Scoble has some things to say about windows and security. Some good comments as well (both for and against). Of course, as he's an MS cheerleader you can't expect completely unbiased reporting.
Based on the continuingly insane SCO claims, I'd say that massive head trauma, or the smoking of some really bad weed got us into this mes to begin with...
Why is the port syntax in ssh "-p NN" and in scp "-P NN"? I'd be less pissed off if the two programs weren't a) based on each other and b) from the same tarball.
*sigh*
In addition to this the host of lameness in GNOME, for example, the lack of ability to paste text after you've closed the application it's been copied from. They are talking about taking over the desktop and this doesn't work yet? WTF!!!
Other things in my list (mostly gnome):
- no easy menu editing (ie: drag to where you want it)
- nautilus views are neat but you loose the functionality to be able to select of rename files in say, the audio (media) view
- mime type editing sucks. make it easier
I was recently treated to this light show. Last weekend I was up in Clinton BC for the annual SCA war (google it if you don't know). Being that it's held in the middle of a huge ass field a few km from Clinton itself, which is in turn in the middle of nowhere, the night sky was amazing. Even with the light pollution of torches and flashlights from the 1100 campers around me, you could still easily just stare up at the sky and see the band of the milky way stretched across.
Quite honestly I just stopped in my tracks more than once and did nothing but stare up at the sky for a while, then move on a bit, and repeat.
Because they a) don't have a choice and b) the barrier to entry for the "real deal" is too high. I'd love to use iTunes to manage all my mp3s, but sadly, I'm not about to fork out $2000CND (for a low level eMac) to $4500 (for a nice titanium powerbook) (prices approximate) when I could spend that money and put together two or three kick ass x86 boxes.
The people that accept this sort of thing already have machines so buying a new machine just to use the service they can get right now. Sure it's not as good, but it's close enough, and the cost of a couple of headaches and emails to and from tech support is far less than the cost of an apple machine for just this one program.
On an aside, it's amusing to hear the apple people berate buymusic for their "windows only" system. The website sucks ass, but they seem to forget that no one without a mac can even browse the apple music store, and AAC is just as drm crippled and single os dependant as WMA. There's a windows version coming, but it's not here yet.
Can people who are getting letters from the RIAA about fileswapping use their windows licenses to let MS handle the cost of the lawsuit? I mean, without the MS software they couldn't be running Kazaa right?
I'm going to take a guess that that's not a common case, as I know for sure it's not for me, and there haven't been any https issues for me or any of the people I know who use https for years now.
Of course, you're an AC, so anything you say I consider a troll anyway.
No offense, but not everyone can afford to move closer to where they work, or work somewhere closer to where they live. It's a good theory, but I think that there are alternatives to working at wendys instead of your current job or paying twice the rent/mortgage just to go about getting in shape:)
"getting fucked up"
Probably not the direct translation though (below):
Balkanize or balkanize ( P ) Pronunciation Key (bolk-nz)
tr.v. Balkanized, Balkanizing, Balkanizes
To divide (a region or territory) into small, often hostile units.
[From the political division of the Balkans in the early 20th century.]Balkanization n.

I'm still going to wear my shirt though.

-1 boring and unrelated.
Very true.
Agreed. I was actually looking for the SCO icon, as the story sounds about as incrediable as the latest SCO claims.

PalmOne just reminds me of RealOne. It's lame either way.
Oh and you are one to talk mr AC?

Yea, I thought so.

Wonder if they are including the LOC from the 80 packages and libraries that you need to install to get gnucash going :)
Search google for "steve balmer monkey dance"

My bad.
Still, $1200-$2800 is more than enough to build a kick ass x86 box.
