Proof again that people who want to get work done on their PC will choose something vastly simpler and already pre-implemented than a CLI kluge that sucks resources because you're running yet another Xserver. *NIX should stay right were it is - Academia and geeks and large business systems - and stay the heck away from the average, "mom & pop" user experience.
If my mom had to do that when she wanted to use their computer when my dad wasn't on it, she'd disown me.
Changes in technology, like switching from stepper motors to voice coils to move the drive head and increase head positioning reliability, successive miniaturization of read-write heads to decrease track-to-track distance, substrate & magnetic material improvements to increase aerial density (the ability to store more per cubic mm), moving from pure-magnetic recording to magnetoresistive recording and more reliable platter drive mechanisms & bearings to increase platter RPM by reducing friction brought about the continuing revolutions in Storage technology.
No such ethnic tie-in was either made or implied. I never made any claim that Thai people are pedophiles or Child Abusers - they are very gentle, kind & gregarious people - with the exception of the people who participate in the horrendous crimes I spoke of.
People usually employ that statement when they're trying to show that there were other religions that killed people.
Now - what about being killed because of your religion? Did the US Government ever condone such a thing, even to it's own citizens? Did any State of the Union call for the extermination of a particular religion's adherants because of their beliefs and allowed wholesale MURDER of those people?
Look up the history of these cities, and you'll be amazed:
The opening thrust of my post was to clairfy to the person I was replying to what the laws were about, and that the original laws were not prohibiting the existence of Homosexuals but prohibiting some activites that Homosexual people (and quite a few Heterosexual people) indulge in.
Regardless of what you might see or hear from state-run Thailand Media, the Child Prostitution epidemic continues. Yes, there are sick, mentally derrainged people who travel to Thailand to comit these attrocities, but they're not all American, you pathetic git!
Holland and Germany are also hypocritical - banning the outward appearance but condoning the inward infection. In Rotterdam you can get your needles replaced by a VENDING MACHINE! Yep - pop your old neddle in the receptacle, and out pops a shiney, new needle!!! Basically, they're condoning drug abuse by saying that it's better to reduce the harm done (an approach called "Harm Reduction", which is just a double-speak phrase to say "We don't want you to hurt yourself, but you can screw-up your mind and anyone elses however you want") than to actually stem the flow of illicit drugs in and out of the nations that support such a policy. The Dutch are even worse, with their "Heroin Park" and an actual government subsidy to support the drug addict's support systems - which actually ends-up keeping them addicted.
Get this into your obviously left-wing/pinko/hippie-influenced cranium - THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RIGHT AND WRONG!. As far as my children are concerned, they DON'T indulge in those things because they KNOW it's wrong. Your claim of a "stifiling upbringing" is one of the usual battle-cries of the person who doesn't want to be hypocritical because their own parents were permissive and they screwed-up their own lives. Give a child a strong moral grounding and they won't deviate from it - be permissive and non-judgemental and you'll screw your kids life.
You should be proud of yourself for achieving what you did with with the ammound of un-schooled & unrestrained freedom you were given - a large percentage of your peers that were "parented" the way you were are in Drug Rehab or a few steps away from it, or heading to jail or dying from HIV/AIDS.
I rest assured and sleep peacefully at night with a sure knowledge that my kids aren't going to have their lives ruined by drug use/abuse or pre-marital sex, or lying and thievery or any kind of unlawful activities because they've been taught to think for themselves with a conscience and a moral background to help guide them - things the average "permissive" parenting doesn't give them. I was raised the same way that I've raised my kids - taught the value of work, the peace of mind that a strong moral background gives, the disdain of cheapening their lives with indulgence in pre-marital sex or drug use/abuse, the importance of following the laws of the land and the pride of being a morally-straight person...an although I'm current unemployed due to the financial fall-out expanded by 9/11/01, I have had an excellent life, one filled with the peace of mind that I don't ever have to worry about dying from AIDS (I was a virgin at marriage, as was my wife) or dealing with drug or alcohol abuse (never used drugs and never drank).
"actually, i rather thought his post was flamebait myself, to be honest, but that's neither here nor there.
"
No flame-bait, just cold, hard facts.
If you can't deal with them, that's your own problem, not mine.
"Eastern" includes Asia and a number of countries in the MIDDLE EAST. Get your facts correct.
It's a shame that people feel the need to retreat into their own onanistic shells when the obvious facts are pointed out to them under the guise of ethnicity.
Obviously, you are not a "Westerner", so I'll have to do some education:
1) Recent laws were either passed or rescinded that allowed concenting people to engage in Sodomy - basically, it's the "What-goes-on-in-your-bedroom-is-your-business" attitude - in certain states. It had nothing to do with allowing homosexual people to exist. Your comment ("...recent orders permitting gays and lesbians...") sounded like the "West" didn't permit Homosexuals to exist.
2) Just because some people engage in stupid/insane/dangerous activities as part of their lifestyle doesn't make it the norm - it's just that those things get more press/media coverage because of the sensationalism angle.
I have 4 kids, and my wife and I have taught them how to judge the difference between right and wrong. They all have chores to do, they know that they're not permitted to watch R-rated movies and WHY they're not permitted to watch them. We teach our children by a simple addage: "Teach a child which way it should go, and it will not soon depart from that path". Parents have a sacred stewardship for their children, and any parent that is "permissive" and doesn't take the time to teach their children the clear-cut difference between right and wrong must be held responsible for what that child might do that is wrong. My kids don't take illicit drugs or drink alcohol, they don't swear, they don't sneak peeks at porn and they are very conscientious(sp) and considerate. They're not angels, but they know the difference between right and wrong, whereas "permissive" parents hardly give their children any direction or standards to uphold and they wonder why their 14-year-old is in Drug Rehab, their 16-year-old is pregnant and doesn't know who the father is, and their 12-year-old just killed the neighbor's cat by dowsing it with gasoline and setting it on fire.
As far as "Eastern" values and morality are concerned - Thailand, and Bangkok specifically, is guilty of being one of the largest Child Prostitution regions in the world. Government Censorship in Thailand is even a bigger joke than morals and responsibility in the Clinton Administration in the U.S.A. - they may say that they censor certain things in Thailand, but the government there nearly looks the other way when it comes to Child Prostitution. Per a UN Report, (http://www.hri.ca/fortherecord1997/documentation/ genassembly/a-52-482.htm), about 20% of the 150,000 to 200,000 prostitutes in Thailand are children. Child Prostitution is even worse, percentage-wise, in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, along with a quickly-growing Child Prostitution problem in Georgia (Eastern Europe). The sex trade in Japan is just as rampant as it has ever been, and the Japanese Government enacts useless laws to try to "manage" the sex industry instead of actually limiting it. "Eastern" values are a joke, because they try to make things look lovely and clean on the outside, while one looks deeper the depravety one finds in Eastern society's under-belly is more horrendous than anything found in the "West" - more magazines and films are made in Eastern countries that deal with bestiality, mutilation and other bizarre sexual practices (including "Snuff-films") than any other region in the world.
Eastern values brought Opium dens and drug abuse to America in the 1920's and hasn't stopped pumping the world with Heroin and other drugs (remember, Afghanistan is technically an EASTERN nation and has Opium as it's most profitable export).
Radical elements in Eastern relgions (Radical Islamic Jihadists) brought death to over 5,000 innocent people from many nations in New York on Sept. 11th, 2001. Radical Islamic Jihadists want an Islamic World - if needed, by force or extermination of "infidels".
So much for "Eastern" values.

Working with ADHD?
·
· Score: 1
I was diagnosed with ADD back in 1990, and after reading the excellent book "Driven To Distraction", I saw so much of my past displayed in a fairly logical "here-is-what-causes-this-behavior" manner (i.e. high testing scores and high IQ but barely below average grades, problems with retaining jobs, etc) that I just sat in amazement. I felt as if I had lived all of my live in a glass house with dirty windows, and that all of a sudden the windows were all clean.
I've been on Dexedrine since 1990 and have not changed medications except once - which was a total disaster. What I've found is that some medications work well for some people where they would not in others.
A warning: If you have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD/ADD-RA (ADD-Residual Adult) and are on psychostimulant or amphetamin-based treatment, DO NOT under ANY condition take any of the so-called "Vitamin & Suppliment" pills that contain so-called "natural" stimulants when your daily dosage is in-force - You will feel like you either OD'ed on your medication or that you drank 200 more cups of coffee than you should have; I didn't sleep for 72 hours after trying that.
Also, remember this: There is no known "cure" for ADD/ADHD - our medication is only there to allow us the opportunity and chance for change that has to happen within us. We all have created procedures or mechanisms in our lives to help cope with our condition, but those can sometimes end-up being self-defeating.
Do you know anything about Accounting practices? Do you know that in Accounting, you have two sides - debit and credit - and that even though data may show a US$2.7 Trillion Trade Debt that there also is a balancing side to that known as Trade Income (aka Exporting)?
It looks like the commentator for the Observer plainly picked a statistic that he liked - one that supported his view - and forgot to include details like Foreign debt owed to the US that has not been paid or has been "forgiven". Pretty convenient, I think.
Some salient facts:
- The US Government dumps BILLIONS of dollars into the IMF to help impoverished nations, and hardly ever sees a penny of that paid back into the IMF. IMF debt is regularly forgiven.
- The US Government has a long history of regularly forgiving foreign debt. If you balanced the forgiven debt against the so-called "foreign debt", the US$2.7 Trillion in foreign debt would end-up being about a US$3.7 Trillion dollar surplus. No other nation in the world "forgives" the debts owed to them, but the US does this almost like clock-work.
- Europe DID receive foreign aid from the US, which was used to rebuild Europe after WWII - oh, but that's not relevant because it's not today. If the foreign aid given to Europe to help it rebuild - not to mention the manpower/labor costs and material costs - were taken in 2001 dollars, the ammount would be staggering...and none of that was paid back to the US.
Why did Europe come to the UN and ask for the US to help in Kosovo? Because it couldn't do it itself!!! The French military is a joke - they're such prima-donnas that they left the Eurofighter 2000 project to build their Dassault "Rafalle" fighter - which, thanks to their charateristic near-sightedness, ballooned to over twice it's planned budget and was nearly cancelled, whereas the Eurofighter 2000 is progressing forward nicely. The German military isn't as bad-off as the French military, but it's not as far in front of the French as it should be.
Regardless of what the Observer article shows, Europe needs the US much more than the US needs Europe. Deal with it.
That's a pretty good theory - considering the fact that the newer surveilance satellites, the KH-12 "Keyhole" series (successors to the veneralbe KH-11) are virtually indistinguishable from the HST.
IIRC, Lockheed was the primary contractor on the HST and all NRO (National Reconnaissance Office) satellites.
Some links (non-classified, publicly-available knowledge):
1) America placing it's troops and systems in harm's way in Europe benefited who?
2) American soldiers working and living in Europe and spending American dollars against the Franc, Mark & Pound boosted who's economy?
3) NATO was all an American plot to somehow subvert "European culture"?
4) Who were driving all of those tank platoons with US Army ensignias all over Germany?
5) Why did European governments whine when the US ans the USSR agree to pull "theater nuclear weapons) out of Europe; removing what Europe saw as it's major line-of-defence against Soviet incursion into Europe.
6) Which nation brought the USSR to the point of collapse and causing the Berlin Wall to fall? Do the words "Mr. Gorbachev: TEAR DOWN THIS WALL!!" ring a bell?
Where would Europe be without the support from the USA?
Where would Europe be without the USA pumping BILLIONS in foreign aid into Europe?
You want to be on your own and without the support of the USA? Fine - when the next border skirmish or "ethnic cleansing" spat happens, you can fscking be on your own..Go figure it out yourself...and go fight your own wars. Screw NATO. We'll just go and call all of our loans to European nations as "Due and Immediately Payable" - your economy would crumble to nothing in a single day.
If it wasn't for America's "envolvement" in Europe, the USSR (not today's Russia) would have continued in Czechoslovakia and Poland, wound their way down and east, taken Germany, France, Spain and the rest of Europe. American threats of force against the USSR and the creation of NATO forced the USSR to re-evaluate their military expansionist policies.
In regards to Europe "falling" to the Nazis - I hate to burst your "euro-centric" bubble-think, but Europe DID fall to Nazi Germany - or did you forget the Swastika flying underneath the Arc de Triomphe? Perhapse you enjoy the idea of having to suffer through memorizing "Mein Kamph", or learning how to goose-step? Did you conveniently forget the US GI's marching through Paris, and the people cheering them as their rescuers and saviours?
Germany and France are now the laughing-stock of the free world - their politics of secretly supporting a dictatorial state in direct violation of UN sanctions while threatening to veto UN Security Council actions against that state has made France and Germany as trustworthy as the Enron CFO.
Do us all a favor and drop the snooty-nosed "We're-better-because-we've-been-around-longer" bullcrap; it smells of spoiled fromage.
The utter ignorance of "Socialistas" just makes me chuckle.
It appears the "viral" licensing plan based on the GPL was designed specifically to protect Linux development from the actions of the original "purported" owner - SCO.
How can you sue someone if there really isn't an actual "someone" to sue?
Linux, RMS and the rest of the Open Source/Free Sotware "advocates" planned this from the beginning, and it stinks of conspiracy.
1) Steal the Source Code. 2) Create legally incongruent and nebulous "licensing agreement" to show that not one singular person or entity "owns" the eventually-released code and executables. 3) Release "new" software based on STOLEN source code under new "licensing" scam. 4) No one is liable because no one is really getting paid to develop the new software - hence, no one is legally liable. 5) Make big money selling books, t-shirts, manuals, distributions of the new software and only charging "production" costs, and getting paid to make guest appearances at hacker-fests and trade-shows.
Linux is nothing more than a scam perpetrated by a Finnish software developer and a bunch of lackeys who also want in on the "I don't get paid but make money on the side" gravy-train - all at the expense of the careers of mindless-but-enthusiastic young people who are too chicken to do any real protesting so decide that they're going to be a rebel by using this cool software called "Linux"
Like I've said before: Linux will die on it's own sword.
Additionally, how much of a megalomaniac are you to use part of your own name in the software you developed:
Linux = Linus' UNIX
At least Bill Gate's company isn't called "BillySoft" or "Gatesware"
Gee, it's so sad that a software company expected people to write CORRECT HTML instead of crap!
Has anyone thought of the fact that maybe this "crash" behavior of IE was a real feature to try to stop poorly written HTML from causing trouble with IE - something like a pre-emptive strike against people who don't know how to properly code HTML? I wonder if someone changed the "crash" into a valid form-input type if IE would work as expected?
Wait - the GPL/Open Souce community rants and raves about Microsoft taking and changing established standards...and when they finally take the established standard in it's entiredty ("raw sockets"), they complain and cry "foul"??
No - the GPL supporters & developers just makes ad hominem attacks against companies that make software that when used under NORMAL conditions and under NORMAL environments are perfectly secure, except when mentally-maladjusted "hackers" want to try to cause trouble and make lame attempts at proving their programming prowess to make-up for the fact that they can't find a woman who will put-up with their poor hygene, a female anime/hentai fixation and lack of any social skills.
Show me ANY Network Administrator or IT Director that actually has time in their life to review ALL of the source-code for any GPL'ed software to ensure that it is defect-free and I'll show you a person who is a perfect fit for all of the previously described deficiencies.
Basically, these private companies have the following to help them:
1) 60+ years of pre-existing design work, experimentation, flight tests and research
2) NASA, NTSB & FAA scientists are assisting most of these private efforts in one manner or another.
3) Most of these private companies have someone who is either part of the team or a consultant who has been involved in the *major* aspects of such systems.
In otherwords, they're not repeating the work of Goddard, Tchialcovsky(sp), or Von Braun - they're taking what others have done to the next logical step.

No/. effect - the author pulled it because of the volume of people hitting MS CorpNet. The dreaded (and oddly hailed and applauded) "/. effect" occurs when a server is BROUGHT DOWN by the volume of HTTP requests directed at that server by/. lackey^H^H^H^H^Hreaders, and not when a url or link is removed due to an anticipated "/. event"
I'm sure that the Network people in Building 11 had a nice "chat" with him and asked him to remove the link to the.pdf file until things did settle down, and that he'll re-release the.pdf file.

Linux = Linus' UNIX
At least Bill Gate's company isn't called "BillySoft" or "Gatesware"
Chew on that, you penguin-boinkers!

Retard.
His name is "Linus"
Good job, fsckwhit.

You can't have it both ways, you retards.
RMS is the leader of the "Axis of Weevils"

If anyone has got an actual shot at this thing, I'll put good money on Burt Rutan.

I thought Spring Break was over - or is your School District/College/Technical Institute on a different schedule?
How about my sending you a "Stop Committing Sensless Acts of Stupidity" sticker - I'll promise to make it small enough to place on your forehead so you can see it every morning you wake-up and look in the mirror.

Dood - you need to step back for a moment and look for the HUMOR in that post.
I'm hoping that your reply to that post was also meant to be humorous.

P.S. Interesting homepage - nice to see another "member" posting here.
I'm amazed that some people who post in this blog can even tie their shoes when they put them on.
/. effect - the author pulled it because of the volume of people hitting MS CorpNet. The dreaded (and oddly hailed and applauded) "/. effect" occurs when a server is BROUGHT DOWN by the volume of HTTP requests directed at that server by /. lackey^H^H^H^H^Hreaders, and not when a url or link is removed due to an anticipated "/. event"
.pdf file until things did settle down, and that he'll re-release the .pdf file.
Try removing the "/uhh.pdf" portion and go to the author's website!!

Now online for free!! (Except that I've removed the link while waiting for the brou-ha-ha on Slashdot to die down.)"
No
I'm sure that the Network people in Building 11 had a nice "chat" with him and asked him to remove the link to the
