does anyone know what happened to Mr. Heiserman and his robots?
I think he founded Cyberdyne Systems and was contracted by the Government to build the SkyNet project. I expect great things from their T-9000 model. __
If I figure out a really neat idea for a faster-than-light drive with no problem, I don't have time to write the novel. I'm out in the back yard building my spaceship.
If I'm not wrong, a FTL vehicle would go back in time, hence you would have lots of time to write. You could write it yesterday for example. __

During the Spanish War (1936-1939), Communists or Anarchists (I don't remember well) burned churches and convents. They also shot priests. The Catholic Church has recently recognised them (the executed) as martyrs. The revolutionaries thought them helpers of the military rebellion.
I think that Soviet repression of religions and the Chinese Cultural Revolution and invasion of Tibet could qualify as well. __
Walt Disney, the only person who really should have had any financial stake in Mick Mouse, died over thirty years ago.
The rumour has it that Disney put his corpse in cryogenic conservation to be resuscitated when the technology becomes advanced enough. That would be a good reason to keep extending rights. He wanted to be sure that he would have enough money in whichever century he comes back!
Some trivia from http://www.deadrabbit.org/movievault/starwars.htm "Star Wars" was modeled after a Japanese movie called "Kakushi Toride No San Akunin". Obi Wan was modeled after a Samuri warrior from the movie, and R2-D2 and C-3PO were modelded after a few petty crooks chosen to help rescue the princess.

Jidai Geki is the Japanese term that Lucas derived Jedi from. Jidai Geki means period drama, or a Japanese soap opera. Lucas had heard the word while staying in Japan and liked it.

Chewbacca was modeled after Lucas' dog, Indianna. [PB: In "Indiana Jones 3", we know that Indy got his nickname form his dog Indiana.]
The Portuguese were entirely right, by their own way of looking things, to send Columbus packing. It was Spain that became the great empire.
Actually Columbus was a crackpot. His calculations had the Earth lots smaller. He intended to arrive to Japan from Europe. The scientific commitees in Castile voted rightly against the project. It's a mistery how he convinced the royals. Maybe he had a secret proof that there was earth to the West. But it's not in the official documentation.
And if you want to evaluate, Macau was returned to China in 1998. Spain lost Cuba, Puerto Rico and Guam in 1898.
The Portuguese way (small trade posts instead of resettlement colonies) was changed when they found Brazil. Then they built the empire. __
Thinking that Slashdot is just Andover's site is like thinking that NYSE is just some buildings in Wall Street.
This is a community. The sinister Andover keiretsu puts the infrastructure, I am putting this comment, you are putting the reading, the advertisers put the money.
If these elements start to fail, the community suffers. No infrastructure leads to bad user experience. No monay leads to bad infrastructure. No readers lead to no advertisers...
I always thought the American environmental regulations controlling toilet flow creating a black market in old toilets was the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of
What will happen to the 'Net when the next big dotcomm to fall is eBay or Amazon, or Google? Especially since Google's USENET archive and WWW cache have become invaluable to a number of people.
Does this justify asking the government to step in and take over these resources so they are preserved for posterity as Frank Davies and many others have suggested or is would this be undue interference by the government?
I think that Google is the main contributor to the Internet Archive, a non-profit that holds teras and teras of Geocities pages. __
this is useable at the site only and not indexable by net-wide spiders (such as Google). While in some cases this is a feature, it locks up the content in a way that prevents it from being found, used and archived by net users in general.
Actually many static pages of Slashdot are included in Google.
I remember that before the "real" publishing of Slashcode (1.0?), lots of people were saying that they were waiting the source to implement NNTP output from Slash. Did any of them succeed?
I suppose that anyway Slashdot wouldn't enable it as it goes against its business model. __
Don't know about America, but there is slavery in at least Europe, Southeast Asia.
It's not legal, but it is quite extended.
Young foreign women are carried into the country and forced into prostitution. They are held in subhuman conditions and they are not paid. They are passed from whorehouse to whorehouse every several weeks.
They may have known they were going to be prostitutes, but they came expecting to earn 1st world money. __
