Yup. Like the detectives who investigated the murder of my last girlfriend, (and I paraphrase) most murders happen to people involved, in some way, in crime. The cops were pissed 'cause she was a "civilian". Violent crime happens mostly to criminals, and the poor.

After that, it's crimes of passion (Yeah, I was the prime suspect for a few hours.)

My girlfriend was innocent, she had a degree from a prestigious university, and was successfully working in her field and building a career. She was 26.

So, numbers are numbers, and there are exceptions. FWIW, no weapons were involved, firearms or otherwise. The Chicago Police caught the murderer a week later. He was convicted 3 years later. He was 17, he'll serve 45 years without parole.

My point is, crime happens. These shootings happen. And they are certainly regrettable. But the news media blow it way out of proportion.

There are too many guns in the U.S., too many arsenals. I'm a gun owner too. But I know we have a problem.

But it's less the guns, than it is the society. There's too much fear in the U.S. That's what the suburban arsenals are all about. Fear. Read a gun or knife forum, these guys talk like they're walking around in a war zone. When in reality, they live in relatively safe communities.

It's not only the fear, it's lack of mental healthcare, and healthcare in general (see the stats on suicide by firearms). It's lack of community. It's lack of social support. It's poverty, unemployment, and anger at not being able to achieve the "American Dream" we all grew up believing in. And the stupid drug laws that put marijuana smokers in hardcore prison for the equivalent of drinking a six-pack. But let's drunk drivers stay on the street.

Blah blah blah, the gun rights advocates, or "gun nuts" are constantly going on about the need to protect themselves, about home invasions, and robberies, and race war.

I grew up in inner-city Chicago, and have traveled in all kinds of dangerous urban settings, at all hours of the day and night, both in Chicago and other cities, unarmed, and the worst thing I've experienced was harsh language.

The problem with gun nuts is they're fearful people. They're afraid of imaginary dangers that are unlikely to happen. Then they get drunk and angry and shoot a friend or family member.

FWIW: I legally own a handgun, which I acquired as an adult after growing not being around guns. My experience is that handguns are a waste of time, and more dangerous to the owner and his/her family than useful. Rifles and shotguns on the other hand are worthwhile investments for hunting, and fighting in the civil war against the Fascist Republicans.

Decrease federal government regulation? Yeah... like that's ever worked to the advantage of the consumer.

What we need to do is have the FCC take over the cables. Then license access to them so anybody who wants to can use the cables for transmission. That way you don't end up with Comcast (or whoever) being the only game in town.

Comcast gets to provide crap customer service and extortionate pricing schemes because they "own" the cable, and no one else can use them to transmit to your home. They have a monopoly in many places.

Regulation is fucking necessary. Because business will never, ever, no matter what they say, do something that is advantageous to the consumer. Business will always fuck you over if they get the chance. Every. Single. Time.

If business can make more profit, there's no ethical line they will not cross. Look around you.

So arguing against government regulation is not in your best interest.

Really? Says you. But if I'm going to believe in something that berates and impugns, and is a tool used by people looking to control others, I think I'll go with science over what the religionists are pushing. At least science requires reproducible results for proof.

Science says: "This sludge is toxic because it contains these toxins. We determined this by following this procedure. Our colleagues have reviewed our procedure, and have found it to be sound and accurate. Using the procedure as described, these colleagues have found identical results. We invite you to examine our procedure for error, and follow it on your sample of sludge and report your findings.

Also, we know these toxins are harmful, because we tested them on living creatures. So did our colleagues, using the exact same procedures we did. Their living creatures were also harmed."

Conservatives say: "We can't afford to make sure the sludge is either not produced, or is less toxic. If we do that, we won't make as much money as we possibly can. Also, that would make our workers safer, and, well, you know our policy towards workers: pay them as little as we can get away with, and if they get injured on the job, fire them for being less productive.

Besides, I prayed on it, and Jesus says the sludge is harmless, and it only harms those who are in cahoots with Satan. I can't prove any of this, you just have to have faith. Jesus wouldn't lie to you, and since I speak for Jesus, you know I'm not lying to you. Anyone who doesn't believe what Jesus says is a America-hating-commie-fag who lacks faith. And let's pray that that person who doesn't believe the truth of Jesus spoken through me dies from the Satan sludge."
