i was under the impression that linux had alot more support for low end hardware. so people who purchased the cheap windows boxes from bestbuy, etal. are able to get linux working without having to worry about specific hardware issues. just a thought.
personally i like the gpl as opposed to the bsd license, but thats a holy war all by itself.
i'm sorry. you misunderstood me. you didnt have to purchase a new copy of windows 9x. in order to get an oem copy (much cheeper than the retail copy) you had to purchase certain types of hardware. purchasing this hardware _doesn't_ mean you _have_ to get a new copy of windows 9x.
for example.
alot of people wanted a full version of 98 and not an upgrade from 95. since they were buying new hardware they qualified to buy oem copies.
when i worked at a computer store you had to purchase certain types of hardware in order to also be able to buy oem software. iirc, in order to get an oem copy of windows you had to buy either a harddrive, mb+cpu, or a cdrom drive. it's been a while but it was something like that.
since i'm a grad student, i live at school. unless ups/fedex/etc will start shipping between 10pm and 6am, i will only be able to recieve packages on sundays or about once a month on weekdays. i've never had trouble having stuff shipped to the office at school thought.
"So, one grows up with

hunting, or to use in a life-or-death defense situation."
hunting = winning dinner
self defense = winning another day on the planet
you have 10 toes. when you smack one into a door you forget about the other 9. just because a few of the people here are hypocritical, remember that there are a lot of us here who are not. we just aren't as noticeable, so our numbers seem smaller.
why not? he didnt even post it with a +1 bonus. it seems pretty fair to me. plus it is much more thought out than:
-why are you an asshole.
-why does ms suck.
-is bill the infamous reciever poseing at goatse.cx.
-etc.
i'm not sure of this, but i think the radio stations purchased the rights to broadcast the games over the radio waves. they had been broadcasting the games over the internet, but didnt have the right to do so. now the MLB wants to sell internet broadcast rights to real networks. in doing this they have to guarantee realnetworks exclusivity, so they have to stop the free broadcast by the radio stations.
weather or not it is a good idea is up for speculation. alot of people think that because they were given something for free once they eternally have the right to have that something for free for ever. this is another example.
and they love cricket. sometimes they spend the night in the office (grad students) so they can watch cricket matches (which can last days) back in india. evidently it is here and it is free. if they were to be charged for it they would bitch about it like they have some right to see it for free.
it could be really bad for the bell. lets say each taco costs them 50 cents to make. now lets say that there are 300 million people in the us. lets say every one of us (man/woman/child) wants a taco. then it will cost them about 150 million. this is a worst case estimate, but it sure would be sweet if it happened.
i'm glad you realize that. i just thought that since cddb had built up what it is trying to sell by relying on the internet community-it would be appropriate if the same community took them down by exploiting the same aspect of their business model.
this is like any big project that is used by alot of people. the kernel for example has hundreds of mirrors. in fact i'm looking at freedb right now to see if i can setup a mirror on our server at school.
just a thought. is cddb still allowing users to submit data? if so wouldnt it be nice if everyone submitted false data. a database full of bad data doesnt really sell that well.
interesting interpretation. i thought it ment any songs whos subject was copyright, or songs who used copyright as a medium. like a banjo with a big C on it or something. man this ron harris has a horrible writing style. i'm an engineer-i wonder what his excuse is.
Sure, why not? I would truly, truly, truly love to see the RIAA attempt to sue every individual
Napster user who has ever posted or downloaded a piece of copyrighted music.
me too, but what would actually happen is this:
the riaa might sue a couple people. the rest of the people would see this and back down-being that they are willing to stand on the civil disobedience pedestal until it becomes inconvenient. this is typical of the apathetic populous here in the us.
alternatively the riaa might threaten the isp's who will cut the cords of their users. reguardless of wether or not the riaa has a legal leg to stand on is irelevent. many of the ips would cut the users so that they dont have to go through the legal hassels. not to mention the aol/tw connection. the folks at time warner call over to aol and say: "hey cut the user who had this ip address at this time. he's a violator".
the us legal system can take alot. look at the "war" on drugs. in the last decade the number of people in the us prision system has increased dramatically. many of these folks are in for minor drug charges and come out alot worse than they went in.
in my opinion the us has become a subsidiary of corporations and the population is happy to be told how to live by watching mtv/suvivor/etc. anything that might be worth the time will infringe on their convenience and we cannot have that.
i think he means that the good will be overwhelmed by the bad. and this will make it next to impossible to find the good. i dont think the original poster was suggesting that the good is bad by association, but rather it would become a needle of good in a haystack of bad.
so if you cannot find the good it's just as useful to you as if it had never exsisted at all.
not that i agree or disagree with the poster, this is just what i got from it.
you just add a wrapper to your napster client that converts you queries into piglatin. so you search for "pink floyd" but your frontend will search for "pink floyd" and "inkpay loydfay". you can even put a wrapper on the search results. so that it converts them back into real english.
cant you just see the riaa hiring commandos to storm the "soverign" platform and destroying the entire thing. think about the amount of money the riaa has involved in this. people have killed for alot less.
Debian has a semi-usable distribution for Ultra Sparc. I beleive they have Xfree working, among
other things, along with the trivial ports that just require a linux kernel
So, all your arguments are invalid. Thank you, and have a nice day.
you say that with such athority. i come from a small town and the selection at the local video store is pretty high. granted there are smaller towns, but they are a short drive to a large one with a rental outlet.
i would also like to add:
9. start your own reviewing site with contributions from the users.
10. with this new thing called the internet you can meet people from everywhere and discuss topics that people in your small town are not familar with. like for example if the newest game for the playstation is sucks, and the different ways to determine weather games is sucks.
