is a beautiful equation. in incorporates all of the important numbers e, pi, i, 0 and 1. i've often thought that if i ever got a tatoo that would be it. yes i know i'm a nerd.
It's kind of funny. The reason I started useing LaTeX is because word once crapped out on my and I lost a crapload of stuff. I wanted something that even if it crashed I could still recover the raw information. I turned to LaTeX because all i need is a text editor and a dvi viewer. Anything with equations/pictures/etc in word would crash after 5 pages, you just don't have that problem with LaTeX. Now they have made a markup language so complicated i have to use a frontend to generate my documents. It seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face.
on that note:
how are the articles about nanotechnology relevant to most of us? or what about D-VHS? synthesizers made from old commodore 64 parts?
this is news for nerds...
i think all of the above catagories including the incorporation of mathml specs into the html standard apply to nerds of one type or another.
..because of the many legacy documents in TeX, and because of the large authoring community versed
in TeX, a priority in the design of MathML was the ability to convert TEX mathematics input into MathML
format.
i dont see why they cannot just take raw tex formatting and use that. why create a whole other language to do the same thing?
i think by keeping the HTML idioms you create alot of complexity/messyness in the code. i could see having a TEX tag like
<TEX>
insert raw tex input here
</TEX>
with standard wrapping/alignment/etc instructions in the opening tag. but adding more stuff is kind of silly if there is already a well documented way of doing the same thing.
write it in LaTeX (a solution thats been around for a while), and couple that with tex2html which has pretty nice output. check out the lecture notes from out thermo class:
i would agree. after you get over the initial hump TeX (or rather LaTeX) is really easy. i would say that I think LaTeX's shortcoming is lack of advertisement. People simply just dont know about it. It's a shame really.
$\frac{1}{x}$ to write 1/x
is pretty easy, i'll have to check out the math ml and see what it's like. or i'll probably just write everything in LaTeX and use tex2html which has pretty nice output.
i agree with you about the trasaction business, but as for the open source thing i do not. last i checked MySQL is open source. ie you have access to the source code. please correct me if i am wrong.
I know people who used to work for MS, and put in long hours testing NT2K, only to have
thier hard effort recieve a vapourware award for much the same reasons - ie the final
release wasn't out yet. Years of work labeled "vapour". I bet you think that's fair, just
because it's not Linux.
um.. no. if they have public betas that show they have progressed toward the goal they have stated, then i dont believe it would be ok for people to label that as vapour. just like when they posted the story about ms getting the 5
billion dollar lawsuit placed against them i didnt say: "hey i dont agree with it but since its microsoft i'll let it slide". just because i prefer linux doesnt mean i think special rules apply. for the record i used nt for along time before switching to linux. i found 3.51 to be very stable. after ms made the move to 4.0 it got alot worse so i swtiched to linux. but i digress.
these people aren't the press. they are more like jerry springer or some other talk show.
lets say that i make a list of who i consider to be a wife beater.
1)an editor for wired
2)redifines terms to make article seme sensationalistic
does that mean that i can publically slander the editors of wired because they fit my personal defination of what i consider a wife beater to be?
the wired article clearly showed that they had nothing better to do but bash people who are working hard on a project, many for free, that has been realized for many months.
if the wired editors were real journalists they would be more responsible. alas most of the real journalists are falling the way side because sensationalism is more important that facts/news.
The idea of allowing someone's program to run on my machine, without my direct
control turns my stomach. Yes I am paranoid, and I think I have good reason to be.
More, bigger, faster and easier are not always better for an individual
user where control is given away to those who have their own agendas.
you let programs run on your computer without direct control all of the time. in linux their called daemons and in windows they are called services. these are programs that run in the background that you never see. in linux most of them are open source, but since most people (myself included) dont religously read every scrap of the source we really dont know what we are running.
what i'm saying is that you have to assume some ignorance in order to use your computer. you depend on others (for linux it's the gnu folks, kernel hackers, etc.) to check this code. i believe you like to think you are in control of your pc.
this is a good idea, but i think it would involve major changes in how the kernel process data. projects like these are possible because the problems can be (relatively easily) broken up into smaller jobs that can be dished out to the clients. in order to do what you want i believe you would either have to rewrite the gimp or the kernel would have to be rewritten to sit on top of your collective computers. i think it would involve more than just a module.
first off joe q user doesnt understand what a security and privacy risk is. if joe q is using windows the stability risk will not make that big of an impact. all of that aside it could be that joe q cannot do complex math but he understands that his computer can. he might also realize that helping to find cures for diseases may not directely impact him, but it's a good thing to do.
i dont know about the rest, but the _only_ one i went to: cure for cancer gives away money.
i didnt know seti at home paid money. screensaves are pretty worthless in my mind, especially now that power management can turn off the monitor.
so if the computers in your office win money do you give it to your company?
Hi. I don't understand the American legal system when it comes to suing people and companies. It seems
like you can sue for any amount of money that you like!
yeah you can sue anyone for any amount. it really doesnt mean anything unless you win. you have to look at what they are suing for. one guy states that he was passed up for promotions which would have lead to stock options. if he has been with ms since the early 80's i could see how he could have missed the opportunity to get a crapload of money.
the good ole' boy system is still in full effect. not so much racism, but rather hiring your friends. the only difference now is that it is called networking. i have personally seen people passed up for promotions and those who had relatives/friends in athoratative positons get them.
so basically the lawyer would have to prove intent. now would this be intent to do damage or intent to piss off someone who just spent alot of money on ebay:)?
have one friend who makes $2500-$3000 systematically acquiring, trading, and selling on ebay the
best items you can get in the game. He anticipates his income will be devastated by this incident,
because people used to trust that their stuff would remain their stuff -- and now, who could trust the
realms?
tell him that mcdonalds is always in need of good help. i actually applaud your friend. it's not easy to find stupid rich people out there.
think about it for just $12000 you can buy an entire school for children in cambodia. or you can get a an iron plated dildo (with +4 damage), 5,000,000 gold pieces, and a loyal toothless midget with three nipples that will follow you around. some things are priceless for everything else there's ebay.
so lets say i put a double quote in a comment, and/. isn't equiped to handle it. next lets say it crashes their db server. and it takes them a day to fix it. in the process they loose $5000 in banner ads plus taco doesnt get to work on his arcade game. then they figure out it was me that put in the double quote. can they successfully sue me for damages?
Oh don't get me wrong, buying stuff like this is kinda crazy. But if they have the money and nothing else to spend it on, they
should be able to, and they shouldn't have to worry about Blizzard rolling back the clock and causing problems like this.
i dont play this but i have friends who do. i believe they told me blizzard didnt approve of selling your stuff in the real world.
until the cure for cancer is found and starvation is nipped in the butt there will always be better things to spend your money on. i'm not one of those tree hugging hippies, but i'm pretty realistic. if somone wants to spend their money on a 3 nippled midget to follow them around in a video game then more power to them. i just find it depressing.
depending on the system a roll back might not be that difficult/expensive. this hole situation is going to be expensive for them reguardless-i'm sure the users that were killed off are pretty pissed right now.
as for people who bought items for real money. come on it's a game-these people have more money than sense. they will probably get pissed and go buy the stuff again on ebay. don't waste your money on the shielded schlong of power-donate it to the march of dimes or some other worthy charity.
from the article: The company's work on the system won the scientists a gold award for innovation from the BAe Systems chairman.
games like redalert/total a have had this idea for along time, and i would suspect that it has been in science fiction literature for much longer. i wouldnt call this an innovation by the scientists.
really thought:
e(i*pi)-1 = 0
is a beautiful equation. in incorporates all of the important numbers e, pi, i, 0 and 1. i've often thought that if i ever got a tatoo that would be it. yes i know i'm a nerd.
