these risks could take a long time to surface. an example of a substance like this is thalidamide. women were given this drug to help with the discomfort of their pregnancy-they had no idea that their children would be horribly deformed.
at the time thalidamide seemed to be harmless and there was no doubt little evidence in the SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE to suggest otherwise
should we be patient with gm-food, or should we throw caution to the wind and not worry about the possible side effects?

the research goals are directed by the funding. lack of funding makes work in biotech very difficult. if you cannot produce any data, it makes publishing impossible. you could start a pr company from anti-gm lobbying... i dont know who would fund such a venture.
this is not a knee jerk reaction. if you would think about it for a bit you would realize that there is alot of money to be made here. with alot of money on the line people tend to move too quickly and dont think about the consequences

...participating in a coverup. it's not unheard of for a community of scientists to reject new ideas that conflict with current pushes in research. because of this i wouldn't be surprised if someone had a hard time finding information in peer-reviewed journals. espically if the information conflicted with alot of the research goals of a community.

agreed. religion has done alot for humanity.. not much of it good. this comes down to petty shit that we all need to get over in order to survive. we need to stop trying to enforce our morals/social customs. if we provide them with the proper education they will find the solutions for themselves. people from 3rd world countries have just as much capacity to learn... they just don't always have the opportunity.

its nice to want to feed the hungry, but this is only a temporary solution to the symptom.
if you feed the starving without educating them you are just posponing the inevitable. they will continue to reproduce until thier ability to feed themselves becomes a problem once again. then we will have to find more nutritious food once again.
the solution to starvation is education! we need to teach them the value of birth control. until this point is realized and we can control our population, disease, starvation and violence will result. this is one of the greatest threats facing humanity currently, and it gets worse each year.
i'm an american grad student, and when i look around i see mostly indians. the reason? have you seen the perceved economy lately? its so easy for an american to go out and get a job paying 60k these days. the only americans in grad school right now (in engineering at least) are there because they really like what they are doing.
people from other countries have much better motivation:
spend a few years in america. get a degree. come back and attain a very high social status

it really depends. geek job can mean alot of things. what i want to do is mathmatical modeling of biological systems. its really hard for me to get the training needed by picking up an o'reily book and going from there. if you want a career (notice i didn't say a job) that requires a more structured type of training then you will probably have to go to school.
eventually i think the more 133t geek jobs of today will be filled by people with higher education. the reason they are not being filled right now is that there isn't any real place you can go to get trained in this sort of thing.
eventually employers will want more security in who they hire. ie the managers will want to say to their boss we should hire schmuck number 1-he has a degree in whatever. this gives them some sort of implied credibility (sp?) to this schmuck. it's sad, but it's the same reason people use windows-its more of a cya thing.

a little economics here. because the average joe could use a computer-the demand has increased. because of the increase in demand production was increased and the price for hardware has dropped. the price drop has brought computers to a much broader consumer base demographically speaking.
the lower income part of the population that can now afford a computer at least has a choice of os wheather they know it or not. without access to the hardware the availabliity of different os's is irrelevant.
infact linus developed linux for the pc because the hardware was cheaper than the minicomputer that ran commerical unix. to this end he can give at least some thanks to bill g.
i've done customer service for pc's. indeed, parents would buy the computer with windows and callup with odd problems, but it was the children that normally worked with it the most. whenever i could, i would plug linux and help them install it. alternatively, i could have taken an eiltest approach and tell them that the computer was smarter than them. i dont think that would help much thought.
i've found ms to be a nice transition os for alot of people.:wq
