    Uhh, splintering? I dont think so, debian came before redhat. Therefore redhat is the one that splintered if you go by your reasoning.

    And debian is built on volunteers, just like the kernel is. If you actually had a clue you would know this.

    I'd like to be the first to point out that dpkg predates rpm. And rpm was created for purely political reasons not technical. And besides, what good do rpms do if you cant share them between dists?

    What is this crap? 3dfx isn't even giving out the full specifications, you are still stuck with their shitty binary only glide drivers.

    Matrox on the other hand has made COMPLETE specifications available for all their major chipsets. I even submitted this story to slashdot the other day but evidently they didnt feel the need to post it. Yet when someone releases binary only drivers they do post it. Seems a little fishy to me.

    Uhh please get your facts straight before bitching about things like this. I can install any non-free package just like the free ones. The only difference is debian doesnt distribute non-free things in the official cd image. There is nothing saying vendors cant distribute non-free cds too, which is what http://www.debian-cd.com does.

    Releasing binary drivers != Supporting linux community.

    Hell, all they have to do is "cp chipspecifications.pdf /home/ftp/pub" and the we will write our own damn drivers, that is a much better solution than using some buggy binary only piece of crap.

    Attitudes like this will lead to the downfall of Linux. I for one will never use a binary driver for anything, to hell with this "be thankful" bullshit. If we openly accept binary-only drivers then this will encourage other companies to do the same.

    Why should we be thankful for leftover scraps then we can have the 14oz. steak?

    The only thing that is a tragedy is that people like you are trying to subvert the whole movement.

    So you say gnome is just about code and not idealogy? I think not. One of Miguel's main objectives in gnome is to "infect as much software as possible with the GPL". When I heard that, my respect for him trippled, both as a coder and as an idealogist.

    Oh, yeah, you are right, I just got back from beating some people into submission because they didn't define their concepts of free software the way I thought they should.

    If you dont agree with debian then dont join, or better yet start your own distribution based on it.

    Correction about enlightenment cvs packages.
    add the following to /etc/apt/sources.list

    deb http://www.debian.org/~bma/e-cvs/debs/ ./

    The package name is enlightenment-cvs

    And our gnome packages do lag behind a little, 0.99.3 is in potato and 0.99.8 will be uploaded very soon. Packages do exist, they just aren't menioned on gnome.org like the rpms.

    Uhh, where have you been? Debian dropped kde quite a while ago, as for qt it is in the non-free section. It is not officially part of debian, they are provided for the convienence of the users.

    The packages will be signed when they are uploaded into the main archive. espy happens to be the libc maintainer for debian, If you can't trust these packages you might as well not trust anything you download off the net.
