Why are console manufacturers making PC based game systems instead of simply bringing more games to regular PCs? I'd much rather play on a 1600x1200 monitor than a 500-odd line TV (maybe this will change when HDTV becomes the norm, but how many consoles support that? Any?)
I know it's not exactly the same thing (surfers affected, not site security), but it's similar in principle: web servers need to carefully filter out harmful code from malicious users. And indeed, the various encoding schemes make things more complicated.
Seriously. I have a book on CGI programming in Perl from 1996 that explains why it has a line of code in the guestbook example that deletes all properly-formatted SSIs () so that a malicious visitor can't put say, into their comment and have your whole password file show up in the guestbook (if your webserver isn't running chroot'ed to it's own root directory, that is). I'm quite amazed that so few people are aware of this the CERT has to post a warning now.
The judge mentioned that he didn't think linking should be forbidden, since it is a key part of the Internet (and if no one is allowed to actually host the "illegal" software , there's no way to link to it anyway).
If you don't need a manual, you can get a CD for less than five bucks from Cheapbytes and the like. I don't see how giving copies of RedHat to schools will really benenft them. Support is the only thing that can't be had from RedHat for free and they're hoping to get that at a discount.
Well, Dell has always been great for me. I really like the level of support on their website - complete specs for practically every system they've made. And their OptiPlex line of business workstations is awesome.
Guess I forgot about USB - you certainly can have an external Winmodem on the USB bus. And with USB I guess you could have it either way - winmodem or normal.
By definition, an external Winmodem is impossible. A Winmodem does not have a UART and the function of the missing UART is performed by your main CPU. External serial ports are driven by UARTs, so it is impossible to have an external modem that doesn't use a UART.
2 27GB drives ($200 each) + 1 card ($50) = 54GB for $450. Once you subtract the $400 MS rebate, the cost for you is only $50. Where you got the $80 figure I don't know.
This is still a hassle for tech support people, because when you need to know what version of Windows they're running, an answer of "95" or "98" is meaningless. You must tell them to go to Control Panel, then System, and get the actual revision from there. It only wastes time.
Well, having names only for versions (as opposed to a numeric version) makes it impossible to tell which version came first by only looking at the name.
all of these can be done is open source as well, leaving you to fork or to try to make everyone not upgrade...
True, but OSS developers usually aren't jerks who break version compatibility just to make a few bucks (as opposed to commercial, closed source developers)
Here in the Boston area, we've got the MIT Flea Market every month, April - October. I've never been to another flea market that has SO much different electronics and computer stuff. Of course, Linux abounds!
The Linux DVD software was written because there wasn't any available. People simply wanted to be able to use the drives they paid for to watch the movies they paid for, with the OS of their choice. Had there been Linux DVD software already available from a commercial vendor (bundled with drives), there would have been no need to 'steal trade secrets'. Also, piracy of DVDs is extremely impractical. A hell of a lot more impractical than watching them. Where do you store 5-6GB files and how do you transfer them? The DVD CCA is just full of shit.
You can run WinNT on Alpha's if you get a special Alpha-only copy of WinNT
For the record: there is actually an Alpha version on every NT4 CD I have ever come across. It has been mentioned that W2K will not be available for Alpha, though my RC2 manuals state that there is at least a beta for Alpha. (I felt like trying out W2K - it destroyed Linux install and confirmed my suspicions that W2K is even worse than NT4)

Just my $0.02.
There's already a utility called gnomba (SMB workgroup browser for Gnome - check freshmeat) and a similar one for KDE, I do believe.
Plus, it would just make them look like fools for not wanting to say anything bad about AOL.

As one of the undoubtedly many /. readers who also reads Ars, why do I need to see this here? I read it on the Ars site hours agoo.
How about some more info?

This is how credit card theft REALLY happens on-line, not by packet sniffing.

Well, the most SATANIC thing in O2K is the "optimized" menus that hide entries you don't use as ofter! Aarrgh!

Well, here in the EST time zome. we just rolled over. My Linux boxes and I are just fine!

Glad to see
Nice, though old 8" floppy drives cudgel much better. Of course, the platters from huge, ancient HDs can make quite good projectiles..

I wish we could see more decent rulings like this in the US.
