Haha, sort of - not "Foogle", but "Foogle." I also gave out my password to "Bruce Perens.", just to be really evil. But Bruce asked me nicely to stop, so I changed it... Someday, when people don't expect it, dot-Bruce will return.

This is so retarded. I don't mind being moderated down here, but doesn't anyone else think that this is just a stupid story? Aren't there better things to post?
I've been told that Slashdot will only post so many stories during one day -- that means we lost a potentially interesting story for this one: a stupid nitpick about a product that is continually made fun of on/. anyway. What gives?
Rusty's experiment with Kuro5hin seems to be working out alright - why doesn't Malda swallow his pride and learn from somebody else how to implement story moderation... Slashdot is going down the tubes.

That's an old-school Slashdot way of being Cute(TM), but it's totally overused and mostly out-of-place... I like this place less and less every day.
And before any of your retarded-monkeys tell me to leave (since I dislike it so much), let me save you the trouble and respond with a loud "eat me". Thanks.

I don't know if the editor was refering to X11, but Mozilla should, theoretically, be able to use Anti-Aliased fonts already. If I'm not mistaken, GTK has anti-aliased font-writing to it's canvases, yes?

You're in denial. Just because it doesn't say "Start" on it, doesn't mean they aren't copying the start-button from Windows. KDE has one, Gnome has one, FVWM has one. And AbiWord looks much more like Word than it does like WordPerfect. Gnumeric is an admitted copy of Excel. Evolution is clearly meant to mimic the functionality and look of Outlook. These applications are environments are all taking ideas from MS software. It's not a big deal, but I wish people would at least admit that Microsoft has made some very nice programs.

That's Slashdot's reaction to everything, isn't it? "MIRROR IT QUICK!" -- Hello? This information isn't exactly top secret. It's not even that interesting, or mildly sought after. I couldn't tell you what Microsoft's motivation behind their letter was, but it wasn't to keep this information from public eyes. Mirroring information that Microsoft themselves gives out seems sort of stupid, if the only reason you're doing it is to spite their EULA.

It may say that "posts are the property of the person who posted them", but the Slashdot crew seems to think otherwise -- after all, they blatently ripped off dozens of our comments, stripped the names from them, and reposted them in Jon Katz's book. I say just remove the comments that are actually offending. If they're reproducing copyrighted material of any kind, they're breaking the law, and the DMCA says that Slashdot has to remove them within 48 hours of being notified.

This is a perfectly good point. Imagine the outrage if a developer moved to Russia (or name your loophole) and began putting GPL'ed code into his products. Open source developers would be furious if a commercial company tried to use a loophole against them, but it's okay if the/. community uses their own loopholes, such as the original LAME patch-workaround? What a double standard...

Doesn't support exceptions? I think you've either misspoken or misunderstand. G++ itself supports the throwing of exceptions as a part of the language. The C++ standard library just doesn't *use* exceptions as a general rule, because it's a tradeoff or speed versus safety. You're left to do your own checking, but it certainly "supports" exceptions.

Tic Tac Toe? You can't win a basic game of tic tac toe against anyone smarter than a 7 year old. The best you can hope for is a draw. Now, some of those 3D tic-tac-toe boards are another story... they're keen.

Don't worry - there isn't a human alive who could memorize all the different branches of a chess game. The human mind is incapable of that sort of storage.

He doesn't have to supply the sources to it, because he's not distributing it anymore. And if he decided to release later versions of the software under a closed license, he doesn't have to distribute the source with those, either. It's his software, he can do whatever he wants with it.

Yeah okay - maybe if you just hurl some more insults it will make your argument stronger. The point still remains. People love to cite "robust"-ness (or lack thereof) as a weakness of a language, and then turn around and call it flexibility when it suits them. Am I wrong here? Would you call C robust?
Or am I missing the point because I'm so ignorant, and - if so - why don't you englighten me Mr I'm-Not-An-Ignorant-Programmer-But-Everyone-Else-H ere-Is.
-----------
"You can't shake the Devil's hand and say you're only kidding."
MS did not design BASIC. BASIC was invented at Dartmouth college well before Gates got into the biz. And what the hell does "robust" mean, when you're talking about a programming language? Is it a thick, creamy soup or something? People throw the word "robust" around as much as "intuitive" and "open source". I guess VB doesn't do as good a job of protecting coders from themselves as languages like Java and Perl do... Big deal -- C is easily less "robust" than VB in this sense, but you don't hear people on Slashdot complaining about C... Hell, just about every OSS application is written in C! C should obviously be used for nothing but instruction, since it's clearly inferior to Java.
I'll keep VB around thanks. It may not be the greatest language for large-scale applications, but it beats the pants off any other language (maybe not Object Pascal in Delphi) for quick GUI-programs. I will recant those words only when I see VisualPerl or PerlBuilder or something of similar quality.

Well, to be honest, that doesn't make much sense. I mean, it's okay if you like Gnome, but then what exactly is it about BeOS that makes you love it some much? The OS itself is less stable than, say, FreeBSD. The interface (and the ease-of-use of that interface) is what really sells BeOS, along with a keen C++ System API.

Yeah maybe that's what was going on... And maybe it was just a bunch of overdramatic people getting bent out of shape over something that really wasn't that significant. Like everything else on Slashdot, this got blown totally out of proportion. A guy died: that's too bad, but he just joined 50,000 other people who did the same thing that day. And he was known for what? Writing a scrap of code that we all made use out of? Well thanks Mr. PK, but you don't really qualify for sainthood.
It's not that I'm not sympathetic to what happened to this poor guy. He just doesn't deserve some of the romantic epic-poems that/.ers are spewing forth about him.
-----------
"You can't shake the Devil's hand and say you're only kidding."
Oh you respected Katz as a developer? Most of the people here didn't even know what PK stood for before today; there's no way they respected him as a developer. You might have said to yourself "gosh, this PKUnzip sure is a good program", but that is not the same as saying "golly, I'd like to meet the guy who wrote this. I really respect what he's done here".
The point is exactly what the above poster said -- people are mourning software. Before he died, nobody gave a shit about the guy who wrote it, and it's disrespectful to pretend that you did.

Hey, don't kid yourself -- Princess Diana may not have been the saint that the media made her out to be, but she did a lot more for this world than Katz did. I doubt PKUnzip ever helped remove land-mines from post-war countries.

My cable company is Adelphia. They provide "Digital Cable", and require you to buy a special box to decode it. To the best of my knowledge, this is not a standard. And, unless the BTTV people have worked some amazing magic, their cards will definitely not decode this signal.
