Well it's not that complicated really. GNU is an operating system without a kernel. The fact that it is most often used with Linux doesn't mean anything -- it's designed for use with a kernel, but it wasn't developed with one in mind (Well there was the Hurd... HAHAHAHHA).

Oh, you poor deluded fool. First of all, Vader isn't forgiven of all his sins -- he's forgiven by his son, and that's the only person who really makes a moral judgement about him.
But even still, it is not the same as saying that Adolf Hitler "saved his son". Vader did more than save his son; he killed the emperor. He turned his back on the dark side and sacrificed his empire out of love for his son. He "redeemed" himself... at least in the eyes of the movie. So yeah, if Adolf Hitler saved his son AND destroyed the Third Reich, sacrificing his life to do so... I think that would be a redeeming quality.

Code Warrior clearly has the multiplatform/language thing going for it, but if that were my criterion, I would've said Emacs anyway;) But I really don't think that the CodeWarrior IDE is comparable to what MS has done with Visual Studio. I guess then, I should say that, for x86 development, you really can't beat VS.

What happens when someone alters the source code? I mean, that's what open source is about. So somebody fsck's around the source code so that it works better with their product that anyone elses. It was still an "Open Benchmark", right? I think this would be even worse than the current situation.
-----------
"You can't shake the Devil's hand and say you're only kidding."
You're totally on crack. MS may not make the most technically excellent products around, but they're anything but a flop (MS-BOB excluded). IE5 is the best browser around (we'll see how Mozilla does as time progresses), Visual Studio is easily the most powerful IDE on the market, Visual Basic is the single most popular development environment for the PC, and Windows is... well it's popular anyway.
But MS is hardly a flop.

I'm not familiar with the issues of inet_addr, but mktemp is vulnerable to race conditions, where an malicious program could slip untrusted data into a temp file, which should be considered a trusted source for storage.

The fact that it's running Linux is incidental at best. The Gimp has been ported to a bunch of different operating systems, including Win32 (and BeOS is in the works I think). If Kimball was more inclined to use something like BSD or Solaris that would have been fine too.
The real point is that it's running Gimp. You'd be hard pressed to turn photoshop into a backend server...
-----------

Um... How is that any better? If the remote machine has to mount a local directory, then it still has to upload all the files you wish to work with. And then it has to send the bytes back to you when it's done.
-----------
"You can't shake the Devil's hand and say you're only kidding."
Are you under the mistaken impression that Kimball is doing this purely for philanthopic reasons? I'm sure he's hoping to make something out of this as a service, not as software. Ad revenue maybe?
-----------
"You can't shake the Devil's hand and say you're only kidding."
Did he? The newest version of the BSDL doesn't have an advertising clause in it. If, in fact, he did choose the older version, it would be purely for vanity purposes... And I personally have no problem with that -- there's nothing wrong with wanting to be acknowledged for something you've spent a lot of time on.
-----------
"You can't shake the Devil's hand and say you're only kidding."
*Far* superior? The only reason people compare the BSDL and the GPL is because their both considered "free". But they serve two entirely different purposes. If AT had released Minix under the GPL, company-X would not be able to incorporate it into their proprietary devices/OS without releasing the source. That's fine if it's what you want. Clearly AT wanted people to be able to use Minix however they'd like, proprietary or not.

As much as I like Linux, OpenBSD really is better suited to the job of a firewall/NAT box. The setup for that functionality is pretty darn simple, and unlike most Linux distros, you don't have to go out of your way to lock-down an OpenBSD machine, when security is an issue. Really, I think the only word to describe OpenBSD is jizzmatic

To further the interests of this wonderful Open Source movement, I've made a few changes to the code myself and am now releasing them to the public. You'll soon be able to get the binaries from rpmfind.net.
#include
void main (int argc,char **argv) { if (argc != 3) { printf ("usage: \"flame \"\n") ; return 0 ; }
printf ("%s SUCKS!!!\n",argv[1]) ; printf ("I PIMP FOR %s's MOM!!!\n",argv[2]) ; printf ("%s IS FOR COMMIES!!!\n",argv[1]) ;
return 0 ; }

Don't put words in my mouth. Of course Slashdot is a place for opinions. I was talking about posts in reference to laws and legal issues; those are clearly posts where people opinions, including my own, are worth jack.

"You can't shake the Devil's hand and say you're only kidding."
Y'know, at first I was going bitch at you for being such a jackass to that poster. I was going to say that you were rude, obnoxious, and make other civilized-but-derogatory remarks based on your reply. However, as I thought about it, I changed my mind.
Because, although you were rude and off-the-cuff, everything you said was on-the-money, and if you have to chew out some clueless moron to make a point about the retarded "lawyer-syndrome" that floats around/. then I guess that's just what has to be done... I don't know, but I really am sick of all the people who spout of garbage about things they have no business talking about. Sure, we're all guilty of it to some extent every once in awhile, but it's like a fucking religion here... And what makes it worse is that half of the posts are prepended with "IANAL".
Do me a favor people - if you're not a lawyer then just shut the hell up, because how you feel personally about an issue is totally irrelevent, and generally drivel.

Well there is ad revenue, but more importantly is that Slashdot is the #1 site for the Linux community, hands-down. That's worth something. Although, since they promise not to exercise any editorial influence, one has to wonder how much value it really has... Rob? Where's the job security?

Don't you hate it when that happens? Circle is another easy one to lose... Just say that over and over like 100 times... Bam, it's gone.
