Don't kid yourself - this has nothing to do with "American Arrogance". We'd have the same problem if this were Canada and UK, or Germany and Switzerland. The problem is that we have an international network, and no international laws. That's precisely what we need. And if we can't get international laws on the internet, then we'll have to use national laws, and nationalize the network. This is precisely what Geographic screening does.

First of all, nobody ever has to sue themselves. But more importantly, it's up to a judge to decide whether or not the device in question not only aids in the circumvention of copyrights, but does so almost exclusively. Clearly you'd be hard pressed to copy a DVD without a DVD player to read it with, but that does not make a DVD player an assisting device in the piracy process. Why? Because the primary, and overwhelming function of the player is to *PLAY* the DVDs. The use of it in piracy is an incidental purpose.

To the effect of DeCSS, it is a program that has only one use: To circumvent the DVD copy-protection scheme. It's irrelevent what the purpose of doing so was (to watch it under Linux or to pirate it over the internet), because the crime here is the actual act of circumvention

Sorry, but I think this Loss-of-Freedom spiel is getting old. Yeah, this sort of thing could "balkanize" the Internet; I admit the possibility. However, in cases such as the iCraveTV suit, some sort of geographical restrictions are necessary.

The "Enter your Canadian Area Code:" prompt at iCraveTV's website was a joke. Any US retard with 5 minutes on his hands could get around this protection, and while a lot of us may like it that way, it's breaking laws. Canada may allow rebroadcasting, but the US does not.

Clearly this is going to be an issue that comes up more and more frequently in the future: How do national laws apply to an international network? There are already some precedents made, but it's obvious that we're not finished by a long shot. Until we see an international set of laws regarding internet content and liabilities, I think geographical restrictions may be the way to go.

My comment may have been off-the-cuff; I was trying to drive the point home. Although it may not apply to you, many people here on /. find it very convenient to break IP laws when it suits them (read: MP3s), but still scream bloody murder when a company like Corel commits an infraction of the GPL. I'm simply trying to say that you can't have it both ways, so if you're going to throw other people's IP out the window, keep that in mind when they start kicking around yours.

Yeah, I've heard that before too. I hear it all the time, whenever the subject of "common carrier" comes up here on Slashdot. It's totally unfounded.

Slashdot does excercise control over what gets posted. Not through moderation, either. You can only post once every 90 seconds, and you can be banned from posting at all (for a limited time, but the point remains). The latter point, more than the first, makes them a discriminating carrier. Telephone systems are common carriers: you can talk all you want (it costs you, but you can do it) and no matter what, the telco cannot take away your line for something you've said on it. So yes, truly indifferent boards can be considered common-carriers, but I hardly think Slashdot qualifies as one of these.

In any case, this is beside the point -- posting copyrighted material (which was the concern of my previous post) is illegal, and infringes on the intellectual property rights of others. If you don't respect other people's IP rights, how can you expect them to respect yours? (read: the ever-precious GPL).

Seriously, this sort of thing should not get moderated up. It's the soul of redundancy, and it infringes on Helix's IP rights. Maybe they wouldn't mind. Maybe they would. I know a lot of sites that would. Helix probably isn't one of them, but that's hardly the point. You could actually be opening Slashdot up to liability by posting illegally. Just because there's a disclaimer at the bottom of the page, doesn't mean it's true -- Slashdot is not a common-carrier.

No, most universities are teaching intro programming with object-oriented languages like C++ and Java now. Maybe how to program Quake? Yeah, that's about all I could think of.

Seriously, you couldn't cover the entire depth of a complex system like Quake in one semester. Could you do it in two? You'd still be pressed. And the individual aspects of the game (skin modelling) would be better taught with applications and systems that were built for doing just that, not ones that do it out of incidence for appearance like quake.
