Charlie Christian - the first, groundbreaker

Ed Bickert - i think I've seen him play live about 50 times, just incredible, and he uses a Telecaster

John Pizzarelli - wonderful tone, fantastic voice, good trio, and his dad Bucky is quite good as well.

i think what he meant is that apple, with os x, is using opengl directly in quartz, via quartz extreme (QE). so the fact that it is now so deeply used in apple's windowing layer should insure it's longevity.

that being said, i don't know how easily opengl could be replaced in QE, but i do know that apple is heavily invested in opengl, as they have written their own shader builder and an ultra useful opengl profiling tool (thanks!), plus they have their own opengl extenstions.

so i think the original poster was remarking on apple's commitment being enough to keep OGL around.

  14. not a study, but experience on Multi-Monitors and Increased Development Productivity? · · Score: 2

sorry, i don't have a study to link to, i can only offer experience. i currently run a big set-up: a gentoo linux machine with a geforce4 that drives two ibm tfts and a powerbook right beside them. when i'm developing (3d game engine for my 4th year thesis) i have useful stuff on all three screens.

i've found that this allows me to have visual slickedit on the main screen, testing stuff on the second screen and docs on the powerbook. it is, to me, very helpful, especially since i'm using a couple of libraries for the first time, so having the docs right beside me is an asset.

a couple of people from school have seen my set-up and gone out and bought a 2nd monitor because they see the value instantly.

a note of interest about using an nvidia dual-monitor system. you basically get one big screen, so you have the ability to drag a window from one monitor to the next. i *wish* i had the ability to view the two screens as independant screens with virtual desktops for each, so i could keep the code on the main screen and switch the other from compile to testing. i currently kinda do this by making the code sticky and flipping back and forth on the 2 virtual desktops.

i have a feeling tha the complexity of making my wish come true is the main reason it does not yet exist. or maybe it does exist, i've done zero research so far.

    hope that helps.

so, i can see exactly where your coming from, but with a bit of added experience of about 5 failed install attempts.

that being said, if you do get a new machine, or maybe just another hard drive, i'd recommend install gentoo, it's quite nice.

If they try to program for those 10,000 combinations of hardware, there WILL be compatibility glitches, and Apple will lose its reputation.

i agree completely. i, like most mac-faithfuls, are putting alot of hope into the ibm desktop power4 chip, and knowing ibm's rep, i'm not worried.
the fact that they have included a vector unit is a good sign. they have previously shunned the unit, so this might be a good indicator that their opinion has changed.

how many times does this idea need to be brought up, and then quickly shot down because it will never happen?

    1. apple makes their money selling hardware. they will lose all that revenue if people can just use a walmart $400 pc.

    2. apple is a systems company, using the fact that they develop both the hardware and the software as an advantage to them. how many times do you hear the words *it just works* when it comes to apple computers? that's a big selling point for the bulk of the population who don't like to tinker with hardware.

    3. yet another architecture change? i think not. moving from 68K to ppc went well, it took some time but it was a success. os9 to os10 is going well, most apps are there and the open source/hobby coder population is booming. so to go from ppc to x86 after moving to a new OS, the big software companies are just going to say no. that's suicide.

    4. ibm's new power4 desktop chip is further evidence that apple is going to stay ppc. this chip has 160 vector ops (altivec has 162), that's another big indicator.

i can't see apple going x86 in the future.

  22. Re:The real question is... on Intel Inside For Apple? · · Score: 2

The thing is, 5 seems least likely to me. apple has just migrated accross platforms for the second time-- the first was 68k to ppc, and the second is classic Mac to OS X. Applications have to be re-written.

Are they really going to ask their developers to re-write their apps yet again, in only a few years? I really doubt it.

i believe that you have hit the nail on the head with this point. architecture shifts are huge and take a long time to complete. apple has pulled it off once, 68k -> ppc was quite well done. os9 -> os x has just started, but is going quite cleanly, given it's drastic nature.

i think your 2nd option is the most likely, but nvidia needs to be in there somehow. (AMAIN??? ;)

what i think would be quite interesting, is if apple took an even bigger roll in developing chips. they have alot of knowledge in-house, and partnering even closer to people like amd and ibm might be a good idea.
so servers/workstations get those giant power4 chips, and portables/consumer machines get the g(4||5).

a remaining question is what is apple's 64-bit strategy?
