And it's exactly this kind of defense of the walled garden that breaks my heart. Do you even realize that your arguing for a future where the OS manufacturers decide what software you're allowed to load on all your devices and computers? Do you even realize what a change that is from EVERYTHING WE EVER STOOD FOR before the 21st century???
Do you REALLY want Apple, Microsoft, and Google deciding what software you can and can't use in the future? Seriously? Because that's what you're arguing for.
I thought MS was bad back in the 90's. But *NOTHING* that MS ever did scares me as much as Apple's walled garden concept, and the potential future that it portends. And to see someone with a six-digit UID actually defending it on Slashdot scares me even more.
If Linux had one standard distro and one standard UI, instead of a thousand squabbling factions, it would indeed be a great opportunity. As it is, it's (sadly) probably more of an opportunity for Apple.
The walled garden has been a huge success for Apple on the iPhone and iPad. Do you honestly think they're not going to eventually bring it to their Mac desktops too (if they even keep making desktops)?
While it's true that/. has a long history of MS-hating, I'm even more disturbed by the fact that Apple still seems all-too-often to get a free pass around here. Apple has, IMHO, *WAY* surpassed MS in the "evil empire" category. MS, even at it's most arrogant and heavy-handed, never tried to construct a walled garden around its OS's and forbid users from loading 3rd-party software that they didn't approve of. Apple has not only done that, but it's become their trademark.
There are loads of people on/. who are still blasting MS for putting a fucking their own web browser in their OS back in the 90's. But when Apple not only puts their own web browser in their OS, *BUT FORBIDS INSTALLING ANY OTHER THIRD-PARTY BROWSER*, everyone just shrugs their shoulders and talks about how great a guy Steve Jobs was.
Not to mention the fact that upgrading from any computer old enough to have come with XP to Windows 8 is highly unlikely. You will almost certainly have to buy new hardware along with that expensive software.
I'm pretty sure that Google's investors wouldn't appreciate them intentionally sabotaging one of their flagship pieces of software just to make some moral point for an obscure OS (that directly competes with their own OS, no less).
I went in there to buy some lame battery (CR123 or whatever) and ended up buying like a 30 pack online for cheaper than their ONE battery. Same deal with cables, electrical components, etc.
Yeah, but do your cheap online HDMI cables have gold-plated tips and oxygen-free wiring like my premium Monster cables?
The reason that you were irritated is because you were one of the smart kids. I felt the same way in school, until one day a teacher told me that they weren't constantly reviewing the basics for *me*. They were doing it for the other 90% of the kids in the class who weren't like me.
If my parents had been able to afford a private school, or if I had access to a "gifted" school, it would have been different (and much better). But in a public school, you can't fault teachers for having to teach to the lowest common denominator. They can't leave the dumb kids behind just because we're smart. We can't forget that just because we're an unrepresentative sample on slashdot.
Am I the only one who is a little suspicious of these "theft" claims? It all looks a lot to me like a pyramid scheme collapsing and the guys at the top running off with the money. Either that or a bunch of bank runs. Either way, I'm more than a little skeptical of the coincidence of all these exchanges suddenly being robbed all at once.
Well, since what I said in my original post was that women enjoy the perk of it being taboo to hit women, and he took issue with this assertion, I can only conclude that he or she is under the deep delusion (perhaps in some alternate universe) that it's just as taboo for men to hit men.
Just try that assertion with a judge sometime. Go punch a woman in a barfight and see if you get the same sentence as someone who punches another guy. You can lecture the judge on equality beforehand and see if he agrees.
I may get accused of being a sexist and all for saying this, but it's been my experience that a feminist vision of "equality" is very different from my definition. "Equality" in their mind is getting all the perks of being a woman (men fawning over you and buying you free food and drinks, sexual power, the taboo on physically attacking you, etc.) while simultaneously also getting all the perks of being a man (higher breadwinner pay, political power, etc.)--and all without having to suffer ANY of the downsides of either gender.
In short, they want it ALL, they want it NOW, and they want it all for FREE.
I just don't understand what kind of market these are going for.
I think the original idea was to market this thing to deadbeat dads. They would stock them in drugstores and Dollar General stores so that loser dads could run in and grab a "game console" for their kid's birthday at the last minute after an all-night bender at the bar--all without having to spend too much of their beer budget. IIRC, "Get your kid a game console, just like their goddamn sober stepdad!" was the original marketing slogan.

Chrome and Opera on iOS are just skins for Apple's own required rendering engine.

We're talking about desktop OS, not mobile.

*I RUN FIREFOX ON MY MAC*
Try running it on you iPad.
You apparently dont use a Mac.
And you apparently have never tried installing Firefox on iOS.
Try installing Firefox on iOS.
Oh, you can't? Yeah, here's why:

This summarizes it pretty well:

I can't wait to live a new mobile lifestyle!
I find that hard to believe, since we all know that bits move a lot faster over oxygen-free wires. The guy at Best Buy told me so!

Where the hell are you working/hanging out where it's ok for *men* to be physically attacked?
Are you seriously going to pretend that punching a woman in anger is no more taboo in modern Western society than punching another man? Seriously?

i agree that anything that's relevant now will not be 2 years from now
-sarcasm on-
Yeah, remember back in the 90's when html, javascript, java, etc. were important for web developers? All long forgotten now.
Not to mention all the OOP languages that were all gone within 2 years of being introduced--like C, C++, etc.
-sarcasm off-
Do you people ever actually read what you type?
we all know english people won't make any efforts to learn french even if the live in france directly
A shit-ton of French students in high schools and colleges across the U.S. would beg to differ, Monsieur.
Especially Scott. He's a real dick.
this is Canada, not France
When it comes to Quebec, what's the difference?
