    He's just parroting the nonsense that tech industry bullshit artists like Mark Zuckerberg have been shoveling for years now--namely, that the tech industry needs more H1B's because we just don't have enough entry-level programmers coming out of U.S. tech schools and colleges. Of course, that's total bullshit. There are plenty of grads coming out of these programs. But they can't get hired because they can't be enslaved as indentured servants like the H1B's.

    The only thing that's going to result from more Americans getting tech degrees from community colleges (and colleges in general, for that matter) is more unemployed people with student debt.

    Yeah, funny how now that he's a lame duck he's suddenly trying to play the hero. Pretty easy to propose bold and radical ideas when you face no risks for doing do and know that none of them will ever actually pass. When he actually had control of Congress, all this "hero" could do was to fall all over himself championing even more heavy-handed domestic spying programs and other evil shit than his shitheel predecessor. Now that he has no power, he suddenly wants to pretend that he gives a shit about the American people, doing the right thing for consumers, etc.

    No sale, hero.

    Why do we keep throwing tech at a non tech problem just for the sake of throwing tech at it?

    In my experience, this sort of thing usually has a lot to do with bribes paid to the school board and/or administrators by some contractor. And by "bribe," I mean whatever euphemism they're going by in any given situation: "Campaign Contribution", "Educational Conference" (in an expensive tropical resort), "Donation", "Gift", etc.

    I resisted 8.1 for a long time because of all the bashing. But I recently rebuilt my system, needed to resintall, and decided to go with 8.1. And it's actually pretty good. It boots fast and has an even smaller footprint than 7. Install was smooth (the only issue was outputting sound over HDMI, which was fixed with my first update). I've not had any crashes or problems so far and I've been using it for several months now. The only problem I have with it interface-wise is with the layout of the start menu, but that took me all of a few minutes to fix.

    As usual, don't believe all the anti-Microsoft hype. Some people will bash anything MS does, for any reason (especially on slashdot). If Bill Gates cured cancer tomorrow and gave the cure away for free, posters would be on here in droves complaining that he didn't do it fast enough.

    And I guarantee you that the preceding paragraph is the exactly the kind of bullshit that was used to sell this turd to the politicians who approved it (along with a few generous campaign contributions, of course).

    If a person is both intelligent and curious/motivated they will do VERY well in academia. One without the other will help, but you really need both to do well. And, IMHO, you really can't teach either. They have to come from innate ability and from inside the student themselves.

    Now, that's in academia. Life is a different story. Success in life depends more on charisma and luck. Intelligence and motivation play a much lesser role there.

    Did anyone really think that NASA was seriously going to not only divert an asteroid to lunar orbit, but also send astronauts there??? NASA hasn't put anyone in lunar orbit in over 40 years. And they haven't even been able to put an astronaut in LEO for years.
