you're comparing computers to cars and home appliances? last time i checked there was a big market for used cars, and getting good usage out of a car that is > 5 years old was far from unheard of. From a status symbol point of view, people are "encouraged" to upgrade to the newest model, but there is really no need to from a usability standpoint. As far as home appliances go, most refrigerators last near 30 years without a whole lot of service, while washers and dryers last at least 15. And breaking up GM? Last time I checked GM didn't have 98% of the automobile market cornered. Your analogy is poor at best.
I was looking just yesterday at the gnutella protocol because I was planning on writing a client. I ended up sort of laughing at how horribly non-thought out the protocol is. The "protocol" as it's called, makes reference to how to handshake (it's really simple because it doesn't need to be complex), and how to get and receive files (http-style requests). That's it. That's the entire protocol. There is some vague mentioning of "passing messages onto people you're connected to" and "pinging", but as far as I could tell, there's no set way to do it. As a result, it's up to the client-writer to implement these things, and I sincerely doubt many of the client writers have had any in-depth advanced networking classes. Basically, as it stands right now, gnutella will never work, not with the protocol as it's currently implemented. The biggest killer is message-forwarding, if you can solve message-forwarding, you can have a scalable network. If your protocol includes message forwarding, you're dead in the water.
today i saw a gore rally highlight on cspan or cnn or the like. Rob Reiner stood on a podium with a "who let the gores out" sign on the front of it. rob says (I swear to god, he actually said this). "Who are we going to vote for on election day? AL GORE! And why are we going to vote for him? BECAUSE WE CAN'T LET THAT 'OTHER GUY' WIN. THAT GUY IS AN IMBECILE." (or something to that effect) Mass applause ensued. I started to laugh, and then I felt sorry for all of those people at that rally, including Rob Reiner. When the best argument (only argument? I haven't heard any other coherent arguments as to why one would vote for Al Gore) is just to keep The Other Guy out of the whitehouse, shouldn't it be readily fucking apparent to everyone involved that there is something seriously wrong with the political system in this country? I think some people are starting to see that, but I fear that the vast majority are so caught up in the lies of the system that they'll never find their way out.
right, free markets. yeah. what's so free about a market in which microsoft and ticketmaster can do whatever the hell they want with their monopoly power? or a market where the auto industry can continue to create and market gas guzzling automobiles (now with exploding tires, get yours today!) and say "to hell with the environment, to hell with people's safety, we need to increase our profit margins." A free market where companies can move all of their labor to third world countries and exploit the hard working indiginous peoples of...wherever. Freedom or capitalism, you can't have it both ways. The Libertarians would be telling you to vote for Nader if they weren't all rich.
I have just been given a patent for the process by which neurons in the brain fire the electronic pulses which allow humans to have thought. My patent on Independent Thought(TM) will require any person who has ever thought of anything, or ever will think of anything, to pay me a royalty for each thought they've thunk. Also, in order to enforce my patent, each person will be required to wear an AntiThought Hat(TM) which will sound an alarm whenever someone has an unapproved/paid for thought. Said person will be allowed 3 Independent Thought Alarms(TM) before the hat explodes, killing the person, and transferring their assets to my bank account. I believe this patent will keep our children safe where Free Unlicensed Thought(TM) has failed. FUT created such atrocities as books, the internet, and rock music, each of which has been clinically proven by scienticians and right wing christian fascists to be harmful to children, pet rabbits, and panda bears.

...does slashdot keep posting moronic articles about x,y, z written by some shmuck whose opinion should not matter to anyone anywhere, and then end the post with a comment like "give the article some thought, the author makes some good points." I'm tired of these goddamn posts. i think you guys should create a sidebar called "useless opinions you can start a flamewar over" and throw this article, the Miguel Unix Sucks article, and the rest into said sidebar. For the love of god, stop trying to force biased opinions onto people, find some content, and drop these useless articles. eh, what am I saying, does anyone actually read slashdot anymore?
what would you say about someone like me who uses napster exclusively to get live pearl jam bootlegs. (a band which allows and encourages taping of their shows)
it runs all linux binaries (including civ and the like) after you add COMPAT_LINUX to your kernel and install the linux_base package. it's not harder to configure than linux, it's _different_. it's not harder to customize than linux, it's _different_. i've never found it to be less reliable than linux, i'm not sure where you got that from. X works better for me on FreeBSD than it did on linux. KDE works better for me on FreeBSD than it did on linux. kde 1.1.2 and x 3.3.5 are in ports, and i can compile and install them with my eyes closed. you did not compile and/or install your new kernel correctly. FreeBSD 4.0 is in development with egcs 2.95.1, the developers #1 priority is to stability, not bleeding-edge software. You can install egcs 2.95.1 from ports and then edit/etc/make.conf and change CC =/path/to/egcs and (in my experience) it works fine. so for all your real, actually experienced reasons, you're wrong.
a-fucking-men. you 12 year old linux kids need to grow up. stop babbling incoherently on this posting board, and start going outside and getting some fucking exercise.
This article appears to be based on a different article that I saw about two weeks or so ago. The original article said that they specifically didn't use linux because it couldn't handle the load or something to that effect. If i find the url, I'll post it.
actually, "maintaining" a FreeBSD system is a piece of cake./usr/ports is a really nice way to install third party software. cvsup is a simple way to keep up to date with the latest source revision, and make buildworld/installworld is a piece of cake. If you think that FreeBSD is hard to maintain, then I'm guessing you refuse to read documentation. The current FreeBSD distribution system rules.
for fucking christ's sake. can't anybody who reads this goddamn page take a fucking joke? i mean, that fuckin page is _funny_. it _amuses_ me. it's a lame attempt at selling shitty backpacks. WHO FUCKING CARES. all i see in this fuckin "forum" is 16 year old socially-inept linux users who think they are the best fucking thing since indoor plumbing. how about you people get rid of your "i fucking rule because i installed redhat" attitude and take life a bit less seriously. you'll get through it a much happier individual. -lqh

Pearl Jam recorded the "Last Kiss" single for a little under $1000 bucks, and did 0 promotion. that sold pretty well

that page serves two (2) purposes. 1: amuse me. 2: piss off people who think they're cool. it would appear it's done its job today.

all i know is that im jealous of anyone who is cool enough to replace the word "someone" with the far-more-elite metaword "some1"

FreeBSD. FreeBSD
Oh, and for the uneducated...
FreeBSD != a linux distribution.
