>I'm sure that Linux would also run better on OSX >hardware, than OSX runs on Windows XP hardware.
Definitely NO. I've been a Linux zealot for more than ten years, writing programs, writing howtos, debugging code etc... (I've even sent some patches to rob malda when he was doing little apps for NextStep or whatever was the name;-)
And Linux was never near to approach the level of finition of Mac OS X. Waiting ten years for something which is still "in construction" is just too long. Linux has failed on the Desktop so you won't make ordinary users accept it. In the same time they will happily accept Mac OS X. It just works out of the box, runs their favorite programs (you know what I mean) they can copy-paste between apps and will never have to open the terminal to use their computer.
I agree that Linux can be "faster" on apple harware than OS X. But it will forever be useless for most users.
I've used it for ten years (yes I'm quite old;-) waiting for a working Desktop to show to my users and convince them to stop using windows or Mac.
10 years later. Linux still asks me to wait but I don't. I'm buying lots of Mac with MacOS X. I'm still using Linux for my servers and my users (mostly scientists) are using Unix with a Mac GUI.
I can still use My Linux NFS and NIS servers with Mac clients. And my users can copy-paste between applications and use MS-Office.
I don't remember if it was in 10.0.4 but now if you go to finder:go:connect to a server
you get a kind of chooser where you can see all your macs (and use them of course).
File sharing is working also (but you have to give the IP# of the OS X server on the classic mac client).
Hope this answers your question. For me it means it works:-)
An Ingeneer from Apple told me before last summer that the newest G4s are already a different generation from the first ones. They call them G4 too because Motorola didn't allow Apple to call them G5 for legal reasons that he couldn't explain...
I've 12 of them for 4 years now without any dead pixels. They are Apple 15" LCD displays (first and second generation with VGA connectors) used mostly on Linux station (PCs) or Apple G3/G4. They have the size of a taiwanese cathodic 17", a longer longevity than most of our Sony trinitron, and a better comfort for users eyes.
They were not really more expensive than good quality cathodic display (about one third more) but what a gain of room on our desktop!
So bad Apple doesn't manufacture them anymore (the new ones don't have a VGA connector) but at least they have proven that it was possible to sell good quality LCDs at a reasonable price.
I agree totally with you. I was using vi years before Linux exists. And I'm sure one day someone will write that bill gates was the one who has written linux-word;-)
He was one of the main developpers of openbsd and has been blackbowled by the others for not really clear reasons. They are just continuing bashing him (I don't defend him nor the contrary)
XS4all and Alex deJoode are now more known in the web databases for their implication in the Grady Ward trial (this is relative to scientlogy:-/ )
Things are not as simple as only name squatting...
Funny, there's a cracker that attacks my machines for more than one year who operates from Brazilian domains only. He's regularly trying all the open ports (espacially pop3, imap and rpc). Perhaps that's the same ? Until now, all he has got, is killing my inetd wiht overflow attempts. There are a lot of crack scripts with comments in portuguese on the web.

Just call it Airport ;-)
Linux will never succeed on "my" Desktop...

That's very close to heaven for a sysadmin, no?
(Aaaaaargh! With OS X you can use a 5 button mouse if you'd like! Just go and buy one! Can we please let this rest already!)
...
And the strength of MAcOS X is that you don't need more than one button...
well, just one more would be nice
of Internic hacking:
:-)
Try "whois microsoft.com"
And you'll get a good laugh at it
(result is in capital letters so cannot be posted here because of lameness filter)
And btw this news has been rejected by slashdot.
I can add that the cheapest wireless solution in France is 3COM
Linksys WAP11 : FF 3990
Apple airport BS : FF 2289
3COM Home Wireless Gateway : FF 1520
Just for information, here in France the linksys access point costs about twice the price of an apple airport base station.

go figure...
It's Deauville not deuville...

I'm using it for one week now, it's really an improvement. Aqua is now normaly fast.
;-) (cannot always say the same with most players under windows).
I'm sticked to MacOS X since I tried 10.1 (before I could'nt stand it, was too slow).
And the DVD player works

So the should the next one be called G5 or G6 ?

There's no link in slashdot announcement nor in the "feed" article.
BTW, this tends to generalize... no link to outside in articles, no easy way to find other information source than the current site...
dead-end servers.
i.e: ;-)
"My" Linux distro has found an important security hole and has made a patch. (insinuating not the other distro
I'm so happy to discover that I'm not alone '-)
I do all of this everyday...

I don't care. I'm really not interested in this article. As for most (if not all) articles from
jonkatz.
I'm really wondering what's the guy is doing here.
I can't stop laughing. Will they send the bill to microsoft ?
Any company pre-installing that looser OS deserves to be mass infected.
Actually, hotmail.com is in my SPAM list. That means that in my domain nobody can use hotmail.
;-)
When hotmail.com wasn't forbidden there thousands
of spam messages coming from them.
Hard for my users, but they have learned not to use hotmail
what appears to be the worst for me is that it is a linux distribution that you cannot (easily) use without windows...
I don't excuse him but I'm scared by the FBI methods.
In most civilized country of the world yhe police has not the right to provoke a crime.
HP has also started spamming for their Linux Courses. I've received three different propositions today from hp.com.
They really behave like flies attracted by fresh flesh... disgusting.
If you like SysVinit and PAM, choose RedHat.
I, personally hate both of them. And I love Slackware for being the last remaining distro
with the old Linux spirit : take the best from
BSD and SysV.
