Password Safe from Counterpane systems, and passwords from "common" phrases. "A Screaming Comes Across the Sky..." Becomes ascats. And then you add non alphas to the mix. Yay.
Regardless of whether or not Username/Password security is inherently outmoded, people as a rule do not use difficult to guess passwords. I run cracking programs regularly on the machines I am in charge of, and I see passwords like "123456" or "user'slastname1". You see the problem, I hope. Adding security isn't going to make you anymore popular, though. Even though it's for their own protection (speaking as someone working in a financial), people will get pissed if the authentication is more difficult or more complex for them than an ATM. I hope this was helpful, I'm not just making up an excuse when I say I'm hungover.
I've read all the stuff that attrition has on him. I've read the Pennenburg (sp?) article. So I've seen him involved in petty squabbling. I was curious to see how he would respond to questions posed by a community with a high clued to unclued ratio. Unfortunatley the maturity ratio looks a little low today. It's a lot easier to say "JP sucks, and now so does Slashdot" and throw in a link to attrition than to ask an intelligent question. For chrissakes, this didn't even spark a decent discussion about network security (which I would have enjoyed, personally).
I'm seeing a lot of comments that end up not actually being questions. I realize that JP is controversial, but that doesn't change the fact that this is a Q&A session. How smart do you think posting a comment(offtopic! Whatever happened to impartial moderation?) about the declining standards of Slashdot makes you look? The answer is : not very. You end up looking more than a little childish in an I'm-taking-my-ball-and-going-home sort of way. I don't think I need any help form the likes o' you in deciding who the clueless morons of the world are, and I'll decide what JP is AFTER he answers.
There are a lot of security information sites on the net, of varying quality. Why should I read AntiOnline? I Suppose I'm wondering what you feel that you're adding/offering that makes you unique.
Very interesting from a technical and non-tchnical standpoint. I like to see Sys Admins getting their $0.02 in, especially when they seem to be reasonable people. I know a lot of admins who are hard-headed and brash, without being correct very often.

PS I'm extremely curious to see how the AntiOnline interview goes. I expect a lot of vitriol and flames. How about you?
Bah. My taxes go to support a myriad of endeavours, very few of which I approve of. I am aware Art != Missle Defense, but I'm still not happy about the whole situation.
Thanks for the info. I'd never even heard of this shmoe, but i was *very* suspicious of an article like this in USA today. I mean, come on. This is a news paper more used to telling you what kind of potato chips most americans eat, in 98 eye-catching colors ("The dreaded USA-Today effect").
Maybe if you'd read the book, instead of just reading the tile (The Unix Hater's Handbook, BTW) you'd realize that it's not really a book for people who hate UN*X, but for people who use it.
No URL here, but Bell's patent on the telephone was granted under shady circumstances as well. I think that the opening paragraph of the above article needs to be rewritten and checked for accuracy.

Also, I didn't mean to say 'Solaris'. I really meant to say 'OS400'.

If you knew *anything* about it, other than something you had heard from a friend of a friend, you would not have made that statemnt. At this point, I'm just going to call you a troglodyte and get on with it.
