Most depression happens because things are going very wrong in one's life, which is usually (but not always) a result of past decisions. I've been depressed, and I recovered stronger than before. Most people do not belong on psychiatric drugs. They're too dangerous. They may help one be a productive citizen, but in my experience with family members, they beget their own disorders, and can disrupt one's ability to establish meaningful relationships.
