  1. Dreamweaver, sftp on R.I.P. FTP · · Score: 1

FYI for those of you who rely on Dreamweaver you can in fact get it to use SFTP without any addons or tweaks. In the remote info under manage sites, in the advanced tab, selecting ftp up top, you can check Use Secure FTP (SFTP). If you run the server yourself, you want to install openssh, the common package name for which is openssh-server and its conf files may be found in /etc/ssh. If you don't run the server, ask your ISP to fire it up if they haven't already.

This of course won't defend you from getting nailed by a keylogger phoning home... but ditching XP and using nano or emacs on *nix of course would help. Do regular backups just in case -- not just the docroot folder but sql if you use that as well.

Truth is, it really doesn't matter who beat whom by 150 votes out of 100 million. Just as long as we have an answer that appears accurate and unquestionable.

These three comopanies will no doubt come up with a better system (heck, anyone could), but it will cost tax payers TONS of money. Money that could be better spent elsewhere.

Besides, what are J. C. Watts and Jesse Jackson going to bitch about next election when our new state-of-the-art system leaves no question next time?

  5. Slashdot's evolving hypocracy, double-standards on Undernet In Serious Trouble: Any Suggestions? (Updated) · · Score: 2

I'm surprised to see slashdotters not rushing to defend these DoS attackers by saying something like, "They are helping by exposing security flaws and vulnerablilities so that they can be fixed."

I mean, that's the typical position one can expect from Slashdot when dealing with someone who has defaced a webpage or otherwise tampered with a system. Those people are considered noble.

Yet, I've gone through a hundred posts and not one doesn't call for the death of these alleged DoS attackers. Yes, what they are doing isn't as creative as drawing a Hitler mustache on Janet Reno on the Department of Justice's webpage, but is it that much worse? Apperently yes, because the victim is the innocent Undernet, and not the evil government. Bah.

I suggest to the Slashdot editors that they try to leave out their biases as much as possible in the headlines/stories because the biases are often flawed, hypocritical, inconsistent with previous biases, or just plain stupid.

I think this group is large enough to keep the analog modem market on its toes. 56k, apparently, is not the point at which we can all relax..

If these people have a technology that can do what they say it can do, they're in for some good times. After all, a typical slashdot page at -1 threshold takes about 26 seconds to load on a 56k.

  7. Censorware == good business to be in, nowadays on Censorware Flaws Shown To COPA Commission · · Score: 2

It's getting tougher to find an office or school who isn't wired to the net. But the way our society works, companies, with little exception, cannot afford to let people run around wild on the net.

If one guy's voting on the Tits of the Week (towview.com), he's creating a potentially "hostile" work environment for which the company can be responsible. And that means big bucks.

I think most of us hate the idea of censorship.. but it's a reality we can't ignore. I guess my point is to think about investing in some of these companies, like Websense (on the Nasdaq), even if their software is so shitty and it pisses you off.

  9. BS on Napster Aftermath: Fan Vs. Corporate Rights · · Score: 1

"political vulnerability" of us net people? Why, because our legal system is evolving a bit to put an end to this widespread theft?

Napster is the White man's form of looting. It doesn't bother me that people steal the music, in fact, I do it myself. What gets my goat is when people try to rationalize it, defend it, criticize Metallica, etc.

I've heard a lot of people whine about CD prices and how the record industry "rips" off artists. Well cousin, nobody forces bands to sign these contracts. And the way our free capitalist market works, if there was a cheaper way to produce, distribute and sell music, someone would start doing it and sell you cheaper cd's. Last time I checked, there are quite a few companies doing the same thing. Competition.

Jon Katz, you're so enlightened, aren't you. The lawyers are the winners, music lovers and Net users the losers, etc, blah blah blah.. The record companies had the option to team up with Napster (who already had an asset of 75mil users with no real marketing), but they decided to press on and shut it down. Why? Maybe because they are coming up with their own plan to distribute music safely (or safer, I should say).

Just because stealing music is so convenient and easy, that doesn't mean the concept of intellectual property is bogus. It is, as the name implies, property.. and that's the law of the land.

The one question I have for one of you legal scholars is if people like Napster can run a business that our courts have found illegal overseas, immune from our countries prosecution?

    True.

If I were Hollywood, however, I would not be too scared. People can already buy bootlegs off the street. People already steal Pay Per View with their black boxes. But I think that the overwhelming majority of movie-viewers would rather experience the flick legally on a nice big theater screen. I feel that most of the soon to be bootleggers are just going to be the people who get off at stealing. Dig?

  11. Facilitating on RIAA Sued By MP3Board.com Over Right To Link · · Score: 2

Perhaps the only way to get modded up is to join the Slashdot anti-business bias, but screw it.

The RIAA, a industry association, has a job to do everything they can to make sure everyone in the music industry gets paid. This includes the musicians, the promoters, the engineers, and the distributors. This means doing what they can to stop people who believe that music should be stolen.

While this particular website was not hosting the music files, by linking them, they are knowingly facilitating the crime. In fact, they are encouraging it. They don't even have Napster's claim that they "don't know what's going on with their users" because they store the links.

I never understood why Slashdot always has to attack businesses!!

Why do slashdot moderators mod up the posts that defend Slashdot's official bias, and mod down posts that go against slashdot and in favor of the laws of our civil society? 13. Netscape is doing some shady currency conversions! on Pioneer to sell first recordable DVD decks · · Score: 1

    Call me paranoid, but...

The price listed for the unit is 250,000 JPY. Netscape indicates that the dollar equivilant is $2,399. Well, it's actually $2,460 now. Yes, I realize that the Yen has only recently strengthened; HOWEVER, why does Netscape happen to do the conversion at the moment it was $2,399?

Everybody knows companies realize that 2,399 seems a lot cheaper to the average American than 2,400. It would seem to me that Netscape went a little out of their way to do what would be in the best interests of Pioneer. They also don't mention how the music industry might feel about this... This article seems to be nothing more than an advertisement or a press release from Pioneer.

So, I conclude: Anything Netscape "reports" should be taken with a grain of salt. Most journalism should... Do you have any idea who owns NBC?

God bless Slashdot! Even the moderators get moderated.

  14. .VOB's outrageously impractical on deCSS Listed On Download.com · · Score: 1

At the moment, the feared use of VOB's of ripping them and trading them around the internet, is pretty far-fetched. On today's modems, it would take you around 28 days to transfer a full DVD. My question is how far are we away from the AVERAGE websurfer, with this DeCSS tool, being reasonably capable of bootlegging DVDs? A year? Also, what can GZIP to do these suckers?

  16. Predatory pricing on Intel to Cut Pentium III Prices · · Score: 1

I believe Intel is engaging in Predatory Pricing.
What is Predatory Pricing? Well, say there's a small burger joint, family owned, who prides themselves on good burgers and good, friendly service. One day, the big bad Burger Heaven franchise moves in on the same block. In order to steal their business and drive them bankrupt, Burger Heaven drops their prices lower than our small family burger joint. These low prices may not even bring Burger Heaven a profit, but they serve the purpose of squashing the weak competition. This is illegal and unethical. It is, however, hard to prove.

When Intel decided to drop their prices, you can bet that in their meetings they did consider how this would appear to be predatory pricing... This alone, in my estimation, would keep them from doing just another routine price drop, THUS, they are truley engaging in predatory pricing and should be boycotted. Thank you.
