>If BSD really is as secure as it has been touted, why keep your choice private "for security reasons"?
Security through obscurity should never be one's ONLY line of defense, but as anyone truly into security knows, it IS a good idea to have it as a PART of one's defense. There's absolutely NO reason, other than OS evangelism, to advertise what kind of security you have. It's not the business of businesses to worry about helping advertise their choice of OS or security technology.
> At 50 or so MPG for the VW Golf TDI, the pollution must be pretty darn low. And, this car isn't even a hybrid.
It's even more extreme than that if you take biodiesel fuel into account AND make it a hybrid. And then if you use a rotary diesel engine using biodiesel in a hybrid vehicle, you're going to be making one clean and lean machine. And, being a rotary diesel, it's going to last a very, very long time, too.
And, using biodiesel instead of diesel means more work for farmers and related industries, and the ability to eliminate the import of foreign fossil fuels.
It depends on what kind of environment the guy's using it in as to whether it even needs to be ruggedized. If he's in a nice C&C type area, there's precious little need for a ruggedized computer. I'd say the guy probably knows his needs better than anyone on Slashdot does. As mentioned in the article, the military buys computers in bulk, rather than specific to individual needs, so I'd bet a great many of those ruggedized machines aren't needed in a ruggedized form factor. Which also means they could save some money if they used a bit more fine-grained needs analysis. But hey, that's the military for ya. Sure, the regular machine may only be a PIII-800MHz, but it'll stop a bullet!:)
Well, you can't compare the abilities of two phones side-by-side unless they're both the same distance from their respective celltowers (which may or may not be the same). In general, however, cellphones with internal antennas will be worse than cellphones with external antennas, if they're of the same type (both GSM, both CDMA, whatever). Trying to figure out which spec phone, with different antenna types is left as an exercise for the reader.:)
What I want is a CDMA2000 phone with external antenna. And I want CDMA2000 access nationwide. Which isn't possible, yet, as CDMA2000 coverage is quite miniscule as yet.:(
As for internal/external antennas, look, the cellphone-makers aren't too bright about this topic. It's a known issue, and phones are so frickin' small already that it's hard for even those of us with normal hands to easily use them. I think a little external antenna nub isn't out of line anymore.
Okay, it doesn't look anywhere near as pretty as the T68i, but that's hardly a big deal. The thing is, like the T68i, it has an internal antenna, which means it's reception is going to suck as bad as the T68i's did. You can tack on all the features in the world, but when you keep dropping connection in iffy areas, I'm just not impressed.
Hey, I like Linux as much as the next guy, and played around (usually with Slackware) for over 5 years before admitting that it's just not what I want to do with my time. I'm currently hoping to get a PPC970-based Mac around the end of the year. Is that geeky enough? Win2K is good enough for now - especially since I don't have to rebuild the system from scratch ever 6 months like I did with Win95/98/SE. *yech*
Lossy compression isn't what's causing pops and hisses - that's likely coming from a bad rip from the original source (not from the compression into mp3). FYI.
You're not going to see 4GHz AMD chips anytime soon. You'll be lucky to see 2GHz AMD chips by the end of the year. The 4GHz Intel chips you'll be seeing won't be "soon," either (sooner than AMD, though), but they'll be 32-bit, not 64. FYI.
I'd guess NASA has an idea for something else that they'd much rather spend money on, and they were planning on asking Congress for money, but now they can't because they've already been given this.
Hey, they can always ask. It's not like there's a budget anymore - what with what's being spent on the impending war, nobody's going to notice if NASA's budget gets tripled over the next two years. It'll just be a rounding error.
I bet NASA would just waste more money on ISS, anyway.

> There's no justice like american justice!
:)
Hey, I'll have you know that America has the best justice money can buy!
> One part of this equation I haven't heard about yet is: where are we going to get the Hydrogen?
:)
It's on Aisle 1A, right next to the Stupidity.
Oh yeah, also forgot that the infrastructure changes for switching to biodiesel are almost nil compared to doing the same for hydrogen.

How is a computer font going to make one of these "differently-abled" accessible?
Clearly, he needs a SUN box. :)
...still no cure for cancer.

I miss OS/2 and Amiga. *sniff*
Really? I've never used a 'less-than-great' decoder, then, I guess. All the rips & encodes I do play just fine in WinAmp. :)
Of course, I use Exact Audio Copy to rip and LAME to encode, so it's not like I'd run into that kind of problem.

I prefer the term "Graboids."
So what happens when a stalagmite and stalactite meet?
Well, then the space between them gets "mitey tite." *groan*
I'd just hit it with a bat and knock it back to stalactite & stalagmite. MAKE the world make sense!
Thank you so much for that imagery. You get a moderation of (-5) Gross.
Stalagmite, stalactite.
Stalagmites grow upwards, from the Ground. G for ground, stalagmite.
Stalactites grow downwards, from the Ceiling. C for ceiling, stalactite.
Oh, and M is for Mnemonic.
This post brought to you by Stalag 17. (Hogaaaan!)
Sorry, meant to type _4_ GHz by end of _next_ year. *sigh*
Oh yeah, you'll see how it all works in the upcoming movie, "Hackers 2: The Fast and the Overclocked."

Xeon + hobby paint.

No way, man, VTEC stickers!

Bring back the DC-X!
NASA _fought_ this? WTF?!
The new show will be about a midget vampire.
