  1. pollute the data stream on Data Miners Scraping Away Our Privacy · · Score: 4, Insightful

There's only two ways to fight this - one is to push for data privacy laws, and the other is to pollute the data stream. When you're asked for a name, address, phone number or birthdate on a web site or form, lie. Just flat out lie. If you live on a town that borders another state (I'm originally from Kansas City, MO), say on forms you live on the other side of the border. Mixing states REALLY confuses data aggregators. The more information you get into the data stream that is fucked up, the harder it is to put it back together in an accurate way.

Make throwaway email addresses at gmail or wherever on a regular basis to use for all this, btw. And keep using DIFFERENT fake data, too, otherwise it will still be a consistent identity of sorts, and will probably eventually be tracked back to you. And don't ever put any real data in Facebook, etc., or put a link between your Facebook account and anything else. Social networking sites are by far the biggest leakers of personal data.

Either make up your own commonly-used CSS styles, or use something pre-made like 960.

Use DD_Roundies to give IE rounded corners and give IE6 alpha transparency for PNGs. (avoid absolute positioning with this until this bug is fixed.)

Use whichever js library you want so you only have to do one set of js for all browsers.

This gets you 99% of the way to where you want to be, generally.

Great point. That reminds me of a story a guy from NASA told my engineering class back in college about the development of the Shuttle SRB (solid rocket boosters). The design of the boosters includes parachutes to gently drop them into the ocean for recovery. They wanted to make sure the chutes detached once it hit the water, so they wouldn't be dragged under by currents. So they put a shock sensor on the chute attachments to detach them when it sensed the big shock of hitting the water. On the first test, he said, as soon as they dropped some test SRBs, the chutes deployed perfectly, and as soon as the chutes deployed, they then detached, dropping the SRB immediately. The shock of the chutes deploying set off the shock sensors. :)

Plus, people will just hack their phones to get around that. Outlaw texting in cars, and only outlaws will text in cars.
