There's only two ways to fight this - one is to push for data privacy laws, and the other is to pollute the data stream. When you're asked for a name, address, phone number or birthdate on a web site or form, lie. Just flat out lie. If you live on a town that borders another state (I'm originally from Kansas City, MO), say on forms you live on the other side of the border. Mixing states REALLY confuses data aggregators. The more information you get into the data stream that is fucked up, the harder it is to put it back together in an accurate way.
Make throwaway email addresses at gmail or wherever on a regular basis to use for all this, btw. And keep using DIFFERENT fake data, too, otherwise it will still be a consistent identity of sorts, and will probably eventually be tracked back to you. And don't ever put any real data in Facebook, etc., or put a link between your Facebook account and anything else. Social networking sites are by far the biggest leakers of personal data.
I have a mailbox at a local UPS store where I have everything sent.
But what would the brew be, that would work with all of the existing applications written in Java today?
It would be the Brew that is True, so Google wants to avoid the Vessel with the Pestle. I'm sure this means they'll choose the Chalice from the Palace.
Pedantic-Man(tm) is an idiot. Droid is a trademark of LucasFilms, licensed to Verizon, for use on their Android phones. Hence the Droid Incredible, made by HTC, not Motorola.
Obviously, they're not going to develop any such thing. Ever. This is one of the most brilliant job security moves I've ever seen in the computer industry. Kudos!
It also has a wide color gamut, which can be a pain in the ass to manage (depends on what you're doing). Anyone not doing video production or graphic design should probably stay away from wide color gamut displays, IMO.
30" 2560x1600. Problem solved (permanently). It also happens to have 178 degree viewing angles, which solved another big annoyance.
If you don't want that expense, HP makes the zr24w monitor, a 24" S-IPS panel with standard color gamut, 1920x1200 resolution, which can be had for around $400 online. Matte screen FTW!
Laid-off NASA 'worker' or NASA 'manager'? Where was the problem with NASA's culture? I'm sure that not giving a clear mission and a realistic budget was a recipe for disaster, too.
I'm much more interested in the possibilities of exploring alternate Earths. Somewhere, I'm just SURE I'll find a world where everyone in the U.S. uses the evolved form of the Amiga, with Dvorak keyboards in Esperanto. And the metric system. I'm dying for a McDonalds Royale (hold the cheese and pickles), with a medium Dr. Pepper with pure cane sugar (no ice).
Maybe the alternate world in Fringe will be a good start, only less fascist. I love the dirigibles and the NYC skyline.
20 light years is millimeters of astrophysical distance.
Yep, we'll get there in no time! Just hop in the Ricer, put on a big-ass wing, a racing strip or two, slap a VTEC sticker on it, and maybe some speed holes, and we'll be there ASAP.
Roadless trip!
I say we go there and nuke the planet from orbit. It's the only way to be sure we don't have to welcome any new overlords. *shakes fist*
It would also mean that you couldn't use your phone when on the bus or train and god knows how it would differentiate between the vibration from walking and being in a car.
Great point. That reminds me of a story a guy from NASA told my engineering class back in college about the development of the Shuttle SRB (solid rocket boosters). The design of the boosters includes parachutes to gently drop them into the ocean for recovery. They wanted to make sure the chutes detached once it hit the water, so they wouldn't be dragged under by currents. So they put a shock sensor on the chute attachments to detach them when it sensed the big shock of hitting the water. On the first test, he said, as soon as they dropped some test SRBs, the chutes deployed perfectly, and as soon as the chutes deployed, they then detached, dropping the SRB immediately. The shock of the chutes deploying set off the shock sensors.:)
Sense vehicular motion (including vibration) and shut down the texting function while in motion.
This would screw over the passengers. And when the passengers are kids that you're trying to keep quiet while you're driving, this also screws the driver.
Plus, people will just hack their phones to get around that. Outlaw texting in cars, and only outlaws will text in cars.
It would be another step back from the "we-are-the-sole-reason-for-the-universe's-existence" mindset. Reducing humanities self-centered leanings leaves some more room for a "we-are-a-part-of-the-universe" attitude that tends to promote a more responsible approach to resource management.
I don't think that would have the impact your hoping for unless it was intelligent life that was more technologically advanced than us. Anything less would be treated just like Western civilization treated (and continues to treat) less advanced societies and life forms. "God made the universe for white guys who claim to be Christian," etc.
I'm glad they found this type of cyclic activity. The sooner we find complex life off-Earth the better.
It's not obvious to me why it's good for us to find complex off-Earth life. Unless it's a technology advanced species that can help us with our problems, I don't see any benefit to finding complex off-Earth life at all. What am I missing?
Also it should be noted that if granted (which is likely), the "million moderate march" will be limited to no more than 25,000 people, per the permit application.
So, about the same number of people who showed up to Glen Beck's 'million man' rally.
Worse, by taking fish out of the water, you make the water level go down (see Archimedes' principle), counteracting rising sea levels. A fishing ban will only make the sea rise faster.
This is why I support a Manhattan project to put more sponges in the worlds oceans. There you go, problem solved.

boggled by what your trying to say. is english not your first language?
You're.
You're.
You're.
You're.
"You're," as in 'You Are'
"Your," as in "Your stupid post was moderated as Insightful."
Also, learn to capitalize the first letter of sentences, and proper names, like 'English.'
Is English not your first language?

> Droid is still not a platform, though.
R2D2, C3PO and the others would like a word with you, sir.
I'm not the Pedantic-Man(tm) they're looking for. Move along.
Pedantic-Man(tm) is an idiot. Droid is a trademark of LucasFilms, licensed to Verizon, for use on their Android phones. Hence the Droid Incredible, made by HTC, not Motorola.
Pedantic-Man(tm) is chastized! :)
Droid is still not a platform, though.
They already bought Danger Incorporated. If they buy RIM and repeat T-Mobile Sidekick disaster, PHBs should learn something about MS.
If PHBs could learn, they wouldn't be PH.
Mind you Droid is not without a few quirks, but the differences are phenomenal. Droid is clearly the better platform.
Pedantic-Man(tm) says, "Droid is not a platform. Droid is a brand from Motorola. Android is the platform." :)

Number of people who now know Bruce McCandless is an asshole: everyone who reads this story. If he wins the lawsuit, he'll still be an asshole.

Use HTML 4.01 STRICT DTD. Strict fixes the IE6 box model problem, which is _huge_.
Use a CSS reset to make all browsers start with a consistent base style which you then define.
Use Clearfix so you can clear floats without having to insert extra HTML (a div clear class which I see people use all the time).
Either make up your own commonly-used CSS styles, or use something pre-made like 960.
Use DD_Roundies to give IE rounded corners and give IE6 alpha transparency for PNGs. (avoid absolute positioning with this until this bug is fixed.)
Use whichever js library you want so you only have to do one set of js for all browsers.
This gets you 99% of the way to where you want to be, generally.

You forgot that the red wunz go faster.
Nah, I'll just go faster until it LOOKS red. I think that's how it works...

Actually light bulbs are also used for heating reptile cages to provide a hot spot for them to bask.
I prefer my reptiles pan-fried, not baked, but I guess that's a matter of personal preference.

I suppose this ought to include Gorillas then since they are able to converse by sign language and thus have the potential for religious instruction
Hey Magilla, if you accept Jesus as your saviour, I'll give you this banana, which is proof of God's existence!

Also it can be layered and so leverage Dimension Z.
Beware of Dimension Z...I heard Red Lectroids can come through there. Not worth the risk.
