My parents rarely used their Windows 98-based PC for anything other than surfing the web and reading e-mail. The only exceptions being an occasional Word document being e-mailed to them and keeping accounting information in a basic spreadsheet.
My first step was to switch them to Mozilla and OpenOffice.org. I introduced Mozilla to them as an upgrade. They have a slow dial-up connection, so they loved being able to read one news article while the next one was already loading in a different tab.
When I switched them to Linux/KDE a couple of months later, their only complaint was the few more seconds it took for their machine to boot. Mozilla and OpenOffice.org looked and felt no different than what they were used to.
Anyway, I can now ssh into their machine to keep it up to date and help them with any problems they might run into.
Quite a while ago, I wrote a little Perl script to run at a given time interval and download certain web sites I was interested in. It stored the MD5 sum. And if the sum - and therefore the site - had changed, the script would send me an E-mail with the URL.
What do people do to their AMD systems to make them unstable? My 1GHz Thunderbird has only been restarted a single time since the day I got it. And that was 17 days ago, during a power outage that lasted slightly longer than my UPS. I have had AMD systems for years and none of them had even the slightest hint of a problem with stability.
I thought it was an interesting article to read. This puts "innovations" like one-click shopping nicely into perspective. It is good to see that there are still some sane people out there...

I thought TROGDOR would have been the obvious choice after Firebird...
Well, I don't know about your planet, but this certainly isn't true on mine. You've obviously never seen a real university from the inside.

Why didn't I think of that? Well, I did.

;-)
Maybe I've just been lucky...
Funny that, I'm using Linux because it lets me do *more* things. Have you ever tried to recompile your Windows kernel? ;-)
I still think it would be very appropriate for a Russian space station to land on the White House.
;-)
Oops... what were the chances of that happening?

Henry Ford invented the automobile. And the wheel was invented by an American as well.
Do people really believe this stuff? American patriotism scares me.
Anyway, that had to be said. You may now moderate me down and continue to rewrite history.
... looks like a lava lamp to me. ;-)
Don't worry, languages evolve with the people who speak them. That is, unless they're French. ;-)
People who don't get it are probably more likely to congratulate him... ;-)
... obviously this guy didn't look before he leaped into Microsoft adoption...
By the way, "Linus Torvalds, the founder of Linux, will be chatting with ABCNEWS.com readers on Wednesday, May 5!"
