  1. A lot of music... on IBMs 73Gig Drive · · Score: 3

Ok, for 256kbit mp3s, it's approx 2 megs per minute...that means 512 minutes per gig. So 512 minutes * 73 gigs means approx. 37376 minutes, or just under 623 hours, which is just under 26 days, a few days short of a month.

Now if we're talking 128kbit mp3's, well then you're good for a few months.

Not that anyone would *EVER* hoard that much copyrighted material, oh no, not us, that would be wrong...

  2. You know it's right... on Gartner Slams Linux · · Score: 1

The article is correct. Linux is too unstandard currently for any mass deployment. Though a person can follow their own standards, there are simply too many different choices in linux (choices mean less-standardness...). What am I speaking of you say? well:

    KDE vs Gnome
QT vs GTK vs Motif vs TK vs etc...
WM vs E vs fvwm(2) vs blackbox vs etc...
Redhat vs Slackware vs Debian vs etc...

While you'll think these are good, great right, more choices for you, but for businesses these can be bad. It's too much variety to keep large companies (500+ employees) all the same. People will want KDE, others Gnome, this (generally) means different apps are used. That means possible incompatibilities.

Sure you can configure them all identically, but do you want to configure 500+ boxes when with windows xx you just have to install and it's all the same?

Linux isn't necessarily ready, but it doesn't mean it can't be made ready. Just realize that so much choice isn't always a benefit.

Now, if you ask for the mods and they say nay, THEN it's a violation.

You're probably thinking, 100+, bah, but when you're on a screen so small, it works.

Now, this guy is doing voxels, which while it can be faster (since it's so limited), it can't be done on a gameboy...hell, the SNES couldn't do a voxel routine well w/o the help of the trusty SuperFX chip.

That is one of the reasons I like to run FreeBSD and/or Linux. I can upgrade my hardware to something else (switch to a PPC if I so wish) and recompile my linux programs, and I'm set. While this isn't true 100% of the time, a good 95% is good enough for most.

You think your average computer user knows enough about C/C++ to fix even a stupid compiler bug, or even what a compiler does and how it works?

Even I get sick of having to recompile things time to time, and when I get bins they don't work because they're compiled against some lib I've never heard of. Guess what I'm getting down to, is if linux wants to be nicer in binary distros, do everyone a favor and offer a statically linked version, yes it's bigger, but it works out of the box (err, ball :P)
