    Exactly why I believe that if people insist on offering only binary distributions, to offer a statically linked copy as well as shared.

    This takes care of almost every problem with distribution differences, other than directory trees.

    Hmm, how do I connect to other computers? SSH.

    What if I need to talk about important stuff on IRC? Encrypted DCC Chat.

    File Transfers? Easy, compress with a password.

    Any kind of protocol for this would be easy to break past. Just remember, they can't watch everyone all the time so they won't watch most of the people any of the time. Encryption wouldn't even have to be extremely strong...just powerful enough for them to not be able to look directly at it. There's FAR too much information out there to decode it all.

    Yes, have him remove the source from his webpage, this will fix everything. After all, it's well known that source code can't simply be downloaded like other files, and can't be copied endlessly throughout the net, or else we'd be in REAL trouble...oh wait, it can.

    Anyways, I don't see the trouble, DVD will come to linux/freebsd/beos/whatever else in time as it becomes increasingly popular...though it still kinda pisses me off that those trying to help get crucified by the lawyers (so to speak) over it.

    BeOS plays wonderfully with TNT[2]'s, as long as you don't expect 3d. Also, you can get BeOS for cheaper than 80, and I don't recall them giving away the PPC version, when was this?

    Actually, on my system:
    Boots in 14 seconds
    Installed in 10 minutes (though a 3 minute full install was recorded somewhere).

    Oh, and java isn't slow, the implementation is. Calling java slow is much like calling 3d first person shooters slow, because of some crap game.

    It's fast enough, professional (semi) looking, and doesn't tax my cpu nor ram.

    Ah yes, the wondrous subscription method.
    As far as I know, yes. I got r3 for intel (first real intel version) and sure enough r4 and r4.5 both arrived in my mail upon their releases.

    More importantly:
    BeOS == MS competition on the desktop market as a desktop OS. And anything bad for MS is good for Sun due to their server rivalry.

    Linux is not desktop competition yet. It's still FAR too difficult for a new user to try (ahh the memories of yore when I *accidently* made my dad's windows partition into a swap partition... oops).

    And yes, BeOS is somewhat POSIX compliant (and it will be moreso in r5)

    Yes, make that requirement, and watch the companies all flip their collective fingers at the person who says they have to.

    Companies will never give up trade secrets. Why? Because the second they do they lose their edge. The second they lose that edge, they're on their way to death. Atleast, that's how they see it.

    If people have to do something they don't want in order to support you, it's simple, they won't support you, unless you're microsoft who has a stronghold on the market and multiple billio...err, never mind the buts...

    ...this is stupid.
    It will run on a standard PC cpu, using a standard PC graphics card...which means the software could just as easily be made to run on a PC (given the proper, err, incentive :P).

    Realize that most console people that I know are also VERY loyal to their system (more so than Amiga people even...and thats a loyal userbase...)

    I know people that have no Playstation or Dreamcast, regardless of the games, simply because it's not Nintendo.

    And don't worry, I'm sure Microsoft will hinder development without a hefty liscence.

    Yes, dselect is an evil EVIL beast.
    apt-get on the other hand is a god-send (great-powers-that-may-or-may-not-be-send for you atheists?)

    Anyways, I had a LOT of the same troubles when I started, then my friend did the wondrous command:
    apt-get install apt-find
    apt-find makes apt-get even easier, and I'm happy.
    No more trying to remember the package name, just find it in the list.

    This is possibly the only packaging system in linux that I've used that can touch FreeBSD's port library.

    Yes, there goes M$ shooting itself again. And while this is a puny cost to large corporations, a lot of local isp's and small web hosting companies won't go for this. In fact, apache in linux and/or freebsd is already the largest used server by small hosting companies. This will just make more look at it. Believe me, even though it's a small amount of money, realize that companies are constantly looking for ways to cut back costs, if NT5..errr...W2k is going to raise costs, they will look at alternatives, whether they switch or not, they'll look. It's exposure, it's the same thing Pepsi and Coke pay for on large billboards - and it's good for us. With this, M$ just nailed another nail into it's server-os coffin.

    ...and as a pool of blood slowly gathers on the floor, and falling down to the knees in agony...

    Well my ISP is actually MediaOne (cable modem...) I was just speaking for all those people out there with modems...

    And by the way, there are a LOT of smaller ISP's that use banks of modems still.

    How does MY modem being more stable help me, unless the ISP's all use these "gamer" modems as well.

    My firmware can be as stable as all hell, but if my ISP is using some $10 winmodem I'm screwed...

    Oh but wait, we ALL know that ISP's upgrade their hardware especially for the 5 users of theirs that need it, right? :)

    Free is good, yes.

    Linux is stable, except when running netscape, which is most likely what they'd use, so there goes that theory (thought they COULD fix it)

    Linux can be setup to handle everything nicely...but it's too different. People wanting a web browsing machine (believe me there are a LOT of WebTV folk out there...) don't want to see KDE, or windowmaker, or even E. They want a web browser, that's it. On a side note, there's one thing BeOS is better at for this than Linux, for a network computer, it boots next to instantly (under 15 seconds on my computer...it was around 10 but checking zip disk slows it down...)

    Oh, and just an observation from most people that have tried to use my linux box, they don't want to get past the dear god, it's not like everything else I've ever fucking used" factor.

    Maybe the market will prove me wrong?

    Actually a few places (cannot recall where) do offer BeOS (well, other than BeComputing...).

    Of course they're not major names.

    On a side note, maybe they won't instlal ANY os?
    I personally would prefer this...let me handle my OS installations, since they either install crap I don't want, or leave out things I need.
    And it would cut down cost...

    Uh, hi, ya, I AM an American.
    I go to work everyday, paying my taxes, and would gladly die for all this country was founded on.

    This was meant to be funny to people with a sick and twisted off beat sense of humor (like myself and many of my friends).

    But if you want reality, all I said was true.

    American's are lazy - don't believe me, look at highschools, how many people do their own work?

    American's are braggarts - don't believe me, just hang around a mall sometime and watch everyone talk about how they have something better.

    And as for not wanting to learn new things, why do you think linux hasn't taken off...people would rather stick with windows because they know it.

    I've proven all my points, though I was hoping I wouldn't have to.

    So a "normal user" can trash their windows 98 box? GOOD. They have every right to. It's their computer. In a properly setup NT network a normal user can install BO2k, and guess what, he/she is screwed, but the system is fine. If the box isn't setup, well that's as stupid has having /bin/bash setuid root.

    Untrue. Any linux user can run a daemon (as long as it uses a port above 1024) and that means anyone else can get in with that users privelages.

    Linux isn't the end-all be-all of security and computing, please, learn this.

    I resent this...I wear the "cool chic clothes", and while I don't drive a 4x4, I drive a '99 Honda Civic, dropped 2", with custom body kit and touring wing and..err, anyways back on topic, just because a guy has a big truck (or tight car) and wears "cool chic clothes" makes them any less of a geek damnit :P

    Anyone else find it ironic that linux, with the "inferior" support has better openGL drivers for linux (thanks Mesa!) than windows (opengl32.dll, blah). Sure you could install mesa for windows, but most people wouldn't.

    Anyways, I have a feeling 3Dfx won't come for a while...they're still after people writing glide wrappers last I heard...

    Ok, I've read a lot about local telephone company monopolies having the blame, and other such rubbish, she here are some facts:

    Fact 1) There is no monopoly in local telephone companies. I live in New Hampshire (not exactly the biggest state...) and we have a lot of mom&pop companies.

    The fact is, bigger LD companies don't want the local market, it's too expensive to deploy with not enough return.

    Fact 2) It's true, modem users on average use a LOT more line time than voice calls. Face it, I know that my average modem call was in the range of 8hours-3days, top voice calls 30 minutes - 2 hours. That means that many more lines that the phone company has to deploy to keep those OTHER (read: voice customers :P) people happy.

    I had some other stuff, but I was destracted by having to do work, so I'll leave with this...

    Seriously curious...what would be the point of this for the majority of us? I'm running a single celeron 400 (soon to be dual) and it does everything I want, without problems. Kernel compilations are in the low single digits, I can play any games full speed, why does the average person here need something this fast? We don't, other than possibly being able to say "haw, my computer is faster than yours."

    Just some thoughts...though I wouldn't complain getting one of these things for my birthday or anything :P
