"GHGSat is building and will launch and operate the world’s first satellite capable of monitoring greenhouse gas (GHG) and air quality gas (AQG) emissions from any industrial site in the world."
Canada had a similar arrangement as Australia it would appear, with registrations happening through a guy at Simon Fraser University. Things could be very frustrating registering.ca domains; many people just gave up and went.com. Anyway, eventually they shifted control to a.com arrangement (more deregulation, really) and things are now very easy to register.ca. So I think the Aussies will find that this is a good thing.
As a software developer in the Unix space, and a former Linux geek, our shop has pretty much completely dumped Linux (except our own servers) in favour of building on BSD stuff where the licence is ideal.
Would you rather go to a doctor or a naturopath? The comparision to games is invalid, just because the lines are blurred and the work environments compressed together. In terms of finding a seemily beautiful solution to a problem, you don't think that some surgery could be declared artistic? A legal argument? Please.
Most of these great artistic solutions are code maintenance nightmares. Good code comes from solid engineering principles.
This isn't so much about pricing as it is forcing high speed providers to expand their service areas. Given the Canadian vision that you shouldn't have to move for a job, etc. but services should be provided as much as possible whereever you are, this is really about bringing high speed to smaller communities instead of just the profitable urban areas.
Now if I can just get high speed access from the cottage I'm outta here! Telecommuting is for me! Damn that would be sweet.
Canada does the same thing, basically. For Canadian companies, you need to have either federal incorpartion papers or trademarks to register a top level domain. Because a lot of small to medium businesses are only incorporated provincially, you are forced to a *.on.ca, *.qc.ca etc. Which sucks as most people would never guess that when doing a search, so it's not worth registering. Even worse, they will also try and force you down to the city level. So it's back to the race for.com etc.
I bought the Marvel G400 a few weeks ago. It kicks ass. I bought it mostly for the video capture & 3D capabilities, and so far it's worked really well.
Matrox *still* has some work to do on it's OpenGL drivers: they released some that work for most games (mostly I'm interested in Tribes) but it's a bit of a pain to upgrade to them.
The video capture itself is perfect. Mind you, I've got an Athlon 600 system. But full frame rate, full quality, no problem. The TV output is quite clear, and watching cable in a window takes no noticible CPU. Plus, DuelHead support, which is pretty cool but I haven't used it much yet.
The only reason that I wouldn't recommend it is if games are your top priority: like I said, Matrox makes really high performing video cards, but they are getting killed due to their poor driver support.(great hardware, weak software support). I haven't tried anything other than 2D under Linux yet, but that gives me as high a resolution as I'm looking for (1600 x 1200).
This is mostly wrong. What they are talking about is SCPS, something that has been in development for many many years. It's a generalized protocol for delay with massive delays, or even the minor delays with satellite communications compared to terrestrial networks. Also has to deal with high loss, etc. It tries to be a lot of things and that's it's problem with the implementation and functional operation.
Wow, I've been to quite a few conferences before (though none of them Linux ones), this one blew them all away big time. Where's the registration form for next year?;)
Good grief, why don't people understand the difference between an advertising trade show and an informative symposium?
I suspect because they probably haven't ever attended anything other than COMDEX type shows. Well, you're losing out then. There's a big difference. At trade shows, all you'll get is stupid advertising of product XYZ. Most likely, the most valuable thing you'll walk out of the show with is a T-shirt. The symposium proposed for ottawa you'll walk out with a real benefit: better understanding of technologies etc.
And the fact of the matter is somehow money has to be paid to cover rooms, organization, and flights for speakers etc. (I doubt the speakers are making much for appearance)
To those the don't like $ 225... whatever! Conference rooms and plane tickets for the speakers aren't free! So either it becomes highly commercial to reduce fees, and there is a lot of bullshit that comes with it (people trying to see you things) or you pay a measly amount for some good speakers.
For the truely poor students, I would also point out that Ottawa has a pretty good youth hostel downtown.
Fine, all sorts of people are skeptical of the impact of bootlegged movies.
But wait until Phantom Menace gets bootlegged. Then things will get insane...it can be dropped on two CDs and played on any updated computer...
It's funny to see this now; it occured to me given the influence of the download of the trailers has had, that the bootleg of star wars was even more likely.

It's built and launching shortly.
You could start with www.measurement-factory.com/.
You may not be second class consumers, but your money is.

What's stopping RH from moving operations altogether to the west coast?
