  1. Important factor on Ask Slashdot: Wireless LAN Options? · · Score: 1

How close together are you buildings? Are they literally 150 feet away or is the building only 20 or so but you two live on opposite ends of your buildings? A Apple Systems Engineer helped wire our building a few years ago. He had a nifty algorithm that he used to calculate whether or not he would have to use fiber or could just use cat5. It also involved nearby trees or other tall structures, ground composition, roofing material, etc... We ended up running fiber fromthe main school 50 feet out to the middle of 3 portable building (glorified trailer houses). From there we ran cat5 out to the two other portables on either side. Its worked flawlessly. He passes away shortly after that so I can't ask him what the algorithm was though. You might consider putting an inline cat5 surge supressor on those outgoing cat5 lines. We have lost 2 nics, 1 inside and one out. I believe it was a building and not a netowrking one, but you can never be too sure. Good luck!

I inquired with Marie (the very nice woman that took my order) about that and she said that it would run up at midnight Pacific time. She said the graveyard shift would probably not mind letting you order a little past that. Good business practice and all. Also, after she and I talked for 15 minutes or so and I was ready to order, I inquired about commission and she said they do get commissions. So if you're feeling kind hearted and one of them helped you out on the phone, be kind. :-)

So if I registered bigredapples.com Apple would sue me. What about microdicksthataresoft.com (not too long either)? Would Bill try to rape me in court? What about SlashYourTsAndDotYourIs.com? Would /. sue me for copyright infringement? They'd all be laughed out of court if they tried that shit. It would have to literally invade one of their copyrighted product name, very, very strongly.

Network Solutions policy is to sit on old domains for 2 years before they are recirulated. In other words, if I registered deathtobillandhisminions.com (which I can't because it is 2 characters too long), and I decided not to renew my contract, Billy Boy couldn't take it over until after the 2 year wait period was over. Very interesting......

  9. telephone power reset on Ask Slashdot: Hardware for Headless Linux Boxes · · Score: 1

My old ISP had a nice little setup that would power cycle anything hooked up to it when it was called via telephone. We had it hooked up to our PBX system. It required a PIN #, obviously, to control it but it was very effective, especially for that POS WorldGroup on NT server they had it running on. Bleah!!! What I want is a way to interface that with my standard telephone or answering machine so I don't have to buy another phoneline to cycle the power of my computer at home. Very useful....
