trading at $51 more than enough to run as an mp3 with 5 gig.
So I would not say it is because of the price to do this. I would tar apart one solely for learning more about and to make it do things that otherwise people would say are impossible to do.
The original Ternary Computer that the Russians built "The Russian Refrigerator"
Was Analog. They spent 10 years writing software for it and by the time they had gotten guidance modules written for it they could buy them from Westinghouse for 100x less in digital binary.
I agree... the industry is based on to many under-experienced hard working project managers and software developers that lack the understanding of estimating, project management, and over all scope management.
The education system has also supported this in basically not teaching an overall methodology such as the SDLC.
If any-other eng. discipline were to allow the overall lack of professionalism in overall project management and scope management.
Software is absolutely able to be realistically managed both on time and on budget!
From what I can tell is that it is much like the java idea but with some significant diffs. The largest is that it seems to have a large need to the ability to call natively written classes thus removing a lot of the performance concerns in java.
This also means welcomn to the world of running microsoft office on your favorite linux distro and paying your yearly subscription.;p
Oracle and DB2 are managed very different but when it comes down to it the conversion is going to very greatly dependant on integrated into Oracles environment. A few things to consider
about the Applications
How much Oracle Pro*C do you use?
Do you use Flex fields in Oracle?
Are you reliant on PL/SQL?
Cursors are managed and used significantly different!!!! You will have to re-write all of your cursor code.
about the Database
How reliant are you on sequial and nested triggers?
Are you using Oracle ODS(High Avalabilty Software)?
What kind of connections do you currently have? persisant or non-per?
about the Data
Date fields are handled differently
Are you using Blobs?
Do you manage multiple volumn underneth your database?
All of these are signigicant issues when you are changing such a critcal system component.
It is like have to change to filesystem on every computer that your company has from Unix to PC a lot has to change.

The one thing that most here have forgotten... and what the GPL license forgets... or does not protect is the same fault that patents have....
Is that case law has proven that unless you are an operating company and in current (key word current) direct competition with said infringing company then you can only sue for damages... but since in the GPL'd world you are typically not a company then you have no damages and thus the only way you can prove damages is based upon the infringing companys revenue... so you only have an oppurtunity to leverage your intelecutual property if they are infringing for a significat duration or the infringment is large enough to be a basis for their core business.
I can't believe that the typical installation does not include JAVA. The average user is not going to go and download Suns plug-in. That was a dumb move. Well I guess a Microsoft Monopoly is not so bad or maybe in the browser war it was the best thing to have happen... Netscape without Java well guess I am going to be using IE from now on.
I might be mistaken but the best that 5.25 disk got to was 1.2M per disk and the vast majority are what.... 360K
