    Douglas Adams himself would have disagreed with you. To paraphrase--Disney also put out The Rock, Pulp Fiction, and so on. They're one big entertainment company with a family division, just like Columbia and other studios.

    In other words, you look like another disestablishment moron. "It's Disney--well, it's gonna suck." I guarantee you'll see the movie anyway and probably like it and forget you even said that.

    Not only does the tone and speech of the books obviously suggest he's white, but the fact a white English guy played him in the radio and TV series should also give you a clue.

    It's just Disney changing things to appeal to Americans. "He's black AND American! That'll get suburbanites in the theater seats."

    Even though Douglas Adams himself dismissed any criticism over the fact that Disney is involved? Did you read his posted quotes earlier in the threads? What rewrite--Douglas Adams was working the scripts up to his death.

    If you think about it, we (and by we, I mean, the Europeans, Americans and Antipodeans among others) enjoy a standard of life far higher than our African/Aisan/South American counterparts.

    What a crock of shit. Have you actually visited places like Japan or Africa or South America? There are some better standards of living than in many of America's major cities.

    It's just that Slashdot does this every time there's even a tiny percentage of a worm epidemic out there. It becomes major headline news with a headline like like "Yet Another Windows Worm." "Today's Windows Virus." It's obvious flamebait.

    If Paul Thurrot's Wininformant.com had been posting articles entitled "Yet Another Linux Worm" and "Today's Linux Virus," you'd see what I mean.

    It was a completely pointless article. Obviously one of the Slashdot editors saw an article about Linux 2.7 and fell over themselves posting it fast enough without even seeing that it was complete fluff and devoid of anything informative.

    You are right on that point. It is a virus that runs only on Windows.

    However, you can't deny that the way Slashdot reports it--"Today's Windows Virus"--makes it sound like Windows itself is at fault. The summary makes it seem such as well. It's heavily biased. This is something the users are causing by stupidly running the executable.

    He's already stated his intention was to play off Microsoft's name--so you're wrong on that point. But that's irrelevant anyway.

    Even if it was unintentional, it's too similiar to Microsoft and dillutes the trademark. Microsoft must legally pursue the defense of their trademark.

    I know you are trying desperately to make Microsoft a bad guy in this, but it's just not going to happen.

    I just think it's funny that Slashdot STILL reports *user-run* attachments as "Windows viruses," as though it's some major flaw in Windows that users are dumb enough to run whatever executables come into their inbox.

    Hell, my Outlook won't even let those attachments through to begin with. "BUT IT'S A WINDOWS VIRUS!!1"

    Even though it's good business policy to protect your trademark, that does not give your business some exclusive right to other words that are pronounced in the same way.

    Yes, it does. Mike Rowe calling it "Mike Rowe Soft" was an obvious and intended play on Microsoft.

    Once established, a trademark must be "policed" to maintain rights. If you allow your mark to become synonymous with others' goods or services, you run the risk that your trademark rights will be lost because the name may be deemed to have become "generic" and, thereby no longer identifies a source, but a good or service available from several sources.

    And in a recent previous Slashdot story, some guy actually told me IBM stopped being evil back in 1984 after I mentioned how people hate Microsoft yet rally around the just-as-evil-and-corporate IBM just because they push Linux now. So much for that. If this were Microsoft patenting a method for paying, say, intern workers, Slashdotters would be falling over themselves posting their "M$" criticisms fast enough.

    They did have a legal leg to stand on.

    You honestly think you'd be able to get away with calling your business/website "Mike Rowe Soft?" Microsoft legally must protect their trademark, or they lose it--and they owe it to their shareholders to do such.

    If Microsoft thought they were right, do you think they would have caved like this?

    Of course. He was only 17, and it's not like Microsoft wants to sue him out of existence. This really isn't that big of a story. Some kid created a spinoff company name, the real company told him to quit, and they settled. I don't get the Slashdot-induced uproar around this.

    Slashdotters want this to be some sort of loss for Microsoft, though, so suddenly it's because of "bad publicity." What bad publicity? The publicity from Slashdot? Yeah, right.

    Nobody gives a crap about your hobbies, unless then involve lots of theft of past employers property, in which case they'll appreciate your candor.

    That's not true at all. If they don't care about the hobbies area, they'll just skip over it in the resume review. But it's better to have it on there. Never sell yourself short.

    My hobbies area always lists the software I use at home, so I'd basically bombard the resume with long lists of the applications I am familiar with and use on a daily basis. I'm lucky in that my hobbies involved the things I do for work, and interviewers have always been impressed by my resume as a result. So, I list the applications relevant to the job in the skills section, then everything else in the hobbies.

    If you're looking to fill a leadership position, maybe then you'd be looking for those who do ask questions.
