The Lopht peeps were setting up something similar as well, and there are quite a few others around as well.
There was an article at technocrat.net about it, but the search seems to be down so can't find it now, also possibly it was posted on/.?
Nice if someone could set up a group/site/thing to coordinate things a bit more, save running into IP conflicts (quite a few seem to be going for IPV6) if they get linked together (even if only tunneled through the internet) and to get some linking going of cos:).
Possibly adding a brief description (possibly keywords as well, although they tend to get abused) of the site to the DNS record.
And you have a massive distributed directory of all websites (except IP address ones), not just the 30% (?) currently indexed by search engines and directories.
Also probably not a good idea to read it if you're not from the states, you won't be able to purchase the rest if you like it as paypal only accepts payment from US.
*some of the money makes its way back to the musician.*
very rarely, think of the label as a loan shark, a very fussy one, even if they do give you a deal you will be very lucky to see anything at all after the advance, maybe if you do well you will get a better advance on the next album, but even so you're better with a credit card...
Ok they do promote, but what?
*where we have a tangible good or service to
produce. *
If you're not producing anything tangible what are you doing? except possibly working in management, music is tangible.
*Dutch boy is putting his finger in the dyke, and more holes are appearing.. *
well we can dream:)~~, but hamsap references aside...
In the story the Dutch boy saved the village, it makes more sense if you reverse it.
The RIAA are trying to stop the leak into thier territory, but behind the wall there is a whole ocean of file sharing going on, they can't see over the wall, they just stick their fingers in what they can see.
Umm ok that didn't make much sense after all, made much more sense in my head....
Bizzare, was thinking about this mornining before this article came up and wondering how easy it would be to write a local proxy that would choose from randomly a list (e.g. from http://proxies.hotmail.ru/proxies.htm) for each request sent.
Really mess up people's log files:), each time you hit someones site you would be showing up as a different unique user for every page and image you got...
Now that really is a first, somebody not only responding to comments on a story that they posted, but admitting to errors in the story.
What are things coming to when your site is hacked and the hackers run it better...:)
Oh well, that's 2 email addresses your're not going to be able to use for a few months, setting them up to forward to jsage@finschhaffen.com would be mean and you definitally shouldn't do that:)
Could be more Linux stuff from Adobe before long anyway, from :
San Jose, Calif., (December 15, 1999) (Nasdaq:ADBE)--With the Linux
operating system gaining momentum as a significant platform for helping
companies build their Internet infrastructures, Adobe Systems today announced its
initial support for Linux®. Beginning in the first quarter of 2000 Adobe expects to
offer a Linux version of Adobe® Acrobat® Distiller® software. Starting today
Adobe customers can download a beta version of Adobe FrameMaker® software
for Linux from the Adobe.com Web site.
"Adobe monitors its markets closely to keep apprised of customer trends and
requirements, and we've seen a growing interest among our customers in the
adoption of the Linux operating system," said Bruce Chizen, Adobe's executive
vice president of Worldwide Products and Marketing. "As we seize new
opportunities to provide solutions that can be easily scaled to take advantage of
the Web, we are encouraged that Linux seems to have potential as an alternative
platform for our customers."
Never mind the P200's my main server's running that, and it's fast, I'm running a PII 300 as my main workstation (with w2k, cos I need my apps:( )
If you want to use computers for computing, as opposed to writing wanky presentions then you don't need much at all, ok compile times might be high, always a pain (rememering days when I wrote html pages 5mins to make an alteration, 30 minutes to load it in netscape [386 4M])
There are a few charities recycling old corporate/donated PCs to 3rd world countries, IIRC they ARE shipping linux with them as well, only makes sense, anyone want to post a few links? good karma in both the real sense and the new capitalist/. meaning of the word, you can't lose!!:)
Thought the same way, but then someone replied to me and mentioned a truncate() bug in one of the 2.4-test kernels, which could trash your files...
I've been using the devel ones and it's never bitten me yet, but it could have.
I guess the theory is that the test kernels whilst probably ok, might have problems, and they may be serious enough to completely trash your system, including data.
If you have a decent backup system going, or don't have anything that you _can't_ lose, then cool.
If you've spent the last 20 years of your life writing the world's greatest app, then ummm.
That's the theory anyway, zero problems here also, and I don't lose much sleep when I run it, then again most of my data is duplicated (at a safe distance) anyway...
*I don't know if that was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, but it came off as being stupid...*
Hard to tell innit.
I reckon that the only real solution is for/. to open an international range of pubs with video conferencing and forget about this bbs thing.

Beer wants to be free!
Right enuff about the apps though, people seem to be missing the point that a linux Distribution _isn't_ an OS, it is more a working environment (or server environment), which is kinda fun cos that's what MS are getting done for trying to do...:)
If all you want is a just Linux system then you're probably gonna have to DIY.
Link to the Lopht's Guerrilla net mentioned above.

nslookup -list software.open.linux.browsers
and get a listing of all the sites and subcategories under that, e.g.
software.open.linux.browsers.galeon
software.open.linux.browsers.mozilla
...

just takes patience, 146M into the second ISO after about a week here...
once spent about 3 months warezing NT 4 (evil AND stupid!) from a server the other side of the world, at sub 1KB/s speeds.
All the up-and-coming bands will just sign on the line, because what else is there, a lifetime of pub gigs?
This whole suite is now (as Napster has lost) a waste of time. It isn't changing a thing, and there needs to be change.
Not just a change in the distribution, but a change in the parathingy

There has NEVER been such a time.
Hope you were trolling...

Happened in the UK recently, this woman had her house vandalised and was forced to move from the area.
She was a pediatrician...
Ok what funny bugger thought it would be fun get the slashcode to change > to > at random when you preview...
Might I recommend a silenced pistol, after they get home of course... :)

Any excuse to get a new system :)
Ok, I'm all for privacy, but that's really taking things a bit far...
(yes, I know)
If only other government departments were as fast...
Surely there are enough of us by now, we could have Blue BGP4 clubs.
Me here pub 2 miles away (and unless I really want to talk about collies I don't go there), everyone in the house don't drink.
But a 'nerd' pub, now that has gotta be worth the travelling and hotel expenses.
And can you imagine the ideas that could be birthed when everyone is so far out of thier gourd that they might be a hamster.
As twisted sister once said "we have the mumble mumble, they have the mumble mumble"
