Oh for christ's sake, a computer that couldn't be asked questions about what it's interests were and expound on those wouldn't pass the Turing test anyway.
You really didn't think too hard about that, did you?
Exactly! IBM with its considerable resources couldn't keep up with Windows compatibility due to M$ moving the API, yet Mono proponents tell us that they *can*.
I agree. If you look at the sports programs on TV at the moment in NZ, they're all VERY non-pc.
The whole "PC gone mad" thing is just a mantra for the right wing in NZ who are pissed because they can't get elected even with the biggest electorial bribe in NZ history.
I got 20% increase on a ray-tracer. AFAIK this is still without having implemented optimisations based on escape analysis - which are expected to be a huge win for Java, so Java performance is set for another big jump again.
The world's ethics are not set by you, or me, or any individual. They are the current mood of the population. Sure, now the whole concept of slavery seems barbaric, but back in the day, slavery was deemed acceptable/ethical. That's the whole point!
Bravo to you for taking cultural relativism to its absurd extreme. The idea has moved from a challenge to be open minded, to the conclusion of all of philosophy. Gone are thousands of years of thought on what mankind could acheive, and we, in our profound wisdom, have replaced it with the "philosophy" that what is moral is what the majority of people say is moral.
Slavery isn't acceptable, no matter what time or what place. I don't care if 90% of people agree to it, those 90% are wrong. Whether you take a utilitarian, or absolutist, or just about any doctrine I can think of besides cultural relativism, it's wrong.
"News for nerds" -- aren't nerds supposed to be in favor of logic and reason? No sound logic or tenable reason can arrive at many of the junk ideas that float around here. You tell me how humanity is better by saying "what's moral is what we think is moral" -- give me some sort of reason based argument that isn't premised on "it makes us feel better."
It's this line of thinking that allows extremism, hatred, and tyranny. The line has to be drawn somewhere, and even those originating the ideas of relativism would accept that.
Why do you suppose that logic and reason has anything to do with morality? That's like saying that mathematics can tell you whether a painting is pretty or not.
Moral discussion are NOT discussions of facts and reason has no baring on them. You can reason from moral axioms, but reason has no influence on what set of moral axioms you start with, and if two people differ in their moral starting points, no amount of logical discussion will make them see eye-to eye. The best they will get is to find out where they differ - the level of moral axioms.
No Kitty, it is you who is deluded!
Hume basically nailed the problem. To quote Charles Pigden, Hume's view was "moral truths are not arrived at by reasoning but are the products of a moral sense". Which is true, IMO, and is why your infatuation with reason and logic is impotent against morality as it actually occurs in nature.
If it makes you feel better, I worship logic and reason every bit as much as you, but unlike you, I realise that logic and reason have their limits. Go and make a christian change their view by deriving the existence of a non-compassionate God due to the existence of evil and see how far your logic works in the real world.:o)
"50% of the world is NOT free! If you count number of countries, the shithole dictatorships far outnumber the free countries. If you count number of people in non-free countries, China makes 25% single-handed. I'd trust the US, even now, more than I would trust "the world"."
*sigh*
Only 25% by population. They don't get 25% of the UN votes, now, do they?
Don't let any, you know, actual FACTs get in the way of your bigotry.
My god, that's ignorant. The western front was a minor footnote to WWII. WWII was won with the blood of Russians on the eastern front. 292k deaths? FFS, the Russian casualties were in the MILLIONs, and a good 90%+ of German casualties were on the eastern front.
You arogant fucks think you were so important in WWII, but the fact is that Russian won the damn war.

>Primitives in Java are a real pain to work with compared to most languages.
Bullshit. I've coded through asm, c, c++, java and they all have their own ways of doing things which you need to be aware of. The language is NOT the problem.
Bollocks. 0.15 Seconds is not a significant start up time, no matter how you spin it. It *is* significant for something you're calling repeatedly in a script, but insignificant for pretty much anything else.
Exactly. Slashdot is a refuge for C coders with their heads in the sand regarding Java. I'm not dissing C - I love C. But Java is a shitload more capable than slashbots care to admit.

What? Google wants to be a plot line?
For christ sake, the article writer needs to learn what the term means.
Exactly! IBM with its considerable resources couldn't keep up with Windows compatibility due to M$ moving the API, yet Mono proponents tell us that they *can*.
Um... bullshit.
Bullshit.
You can program anything you like without using com.sun.* in Java, and Sun SPECIFICALLY warn you NOT to use anything under com.sun.*.
Mono is a trojan horse. Letting it into Linux distros is BAD. We're inviting patent issues into Linux which is stupid.
Well, time to switch to Debian - I *will not* run that crap.
Who modded that insightful?
Seemed like a spiteful troll to me.
Google does more serious development in Java than Python. Their python usage is more for glue code.
Thanks for agreeing with me.
Bullshit. Maybe a decade ago Java was a buzzword, it's now an established, proven, effective technology on the server side. I call FUD.
I agree. If you look at the sports programs on TV at the moment in NZ, they're all VERY non-pc.

...who actually *needs* to be free to trade in child porn?
People collect data all the time - that's not important, what is important is *how* they use the data.
... the US had no political control over the internet, so the telcos are obviously morons in petitioning US politicians for change right?
And you know what - Slashdot editors REFUSED to post that story (which is pure fact) and post instead pure FUD filled crap like the current article.
/. editors? I really think so.
Anti Java bias from
Java is the top language for projects on Source forge. .Net and LAMP are NOWHERE by comparison.
I call this article pure FUD and further proof of the Slashdot editor's antagonism towards Java.
...because he's another whiney slashbot tosser who hates Sun for not giving away absolutely everything they own for free.
It's worth pointing out that pre-releases of Java 6 (Mustang) are showing in the order of 10-20% speed increases for many Java apps

For christ's sake, have you Java haters *still* not understood that Java is compiled at run time?
