Best defense against a patent would be copyright. Cheapest and fastest way to copyright, snail mail. That's right kids, write up your idea, photocopy a page for yourself so you remember what's in the envelope, mail the original to yourself and don't open it. The date/time stamp from the unopened envelope is an acceptable form of copyrighted materiel. IE - if you thought of it first, you can challenge the patent, usually through small claims court. You won't get paid for it, but it will revoke the patent.:) I'm sending myself a picture of a spoon as we speak. And sliced bread.
At what point do we allow our children to be adults? They are paying rent to a landlord to live in dorms. The landlord just happens to be the state. If the student/ adult damages the property, sue them for it. Welcome to adulthood. When your 18 you are subject to the same laws as everyone else - YOUR PARENTS DO NOT APPLY to your f'n situation. If kids want to miss class or not study because they are wacking off, well they just wasted a year of mommy and daddy's full scholership. I did it and now I'm still working to put myself through school, and it was the best thing for me. At least I'm not wasting gov. money on grants and loans I use for parties! Before I rant on forever - My 2 cents - Quit allowing someone elses parents to protect thier adult aged children! Let America GROW UP! Sheesh! ctimes2
"Good, now we can shoot at the bastards in every direction" - Col. Chesty Puller, United States Marine Corps at the battle of Inchon, Korea 195[?], after his battalion got surrounded by 8 North Korean Divisions. And it was cold out... WAY off topic. ctimes2
AMEN! I think a whole lot of this could be solved by people having the right to protect themselves. Oh, without being sued. I.E. you get hurt committing a crime and...well you shouldn't'a been committing a crime. I wonder what happened to the folks who were using the bugs illegaly?
One has little to do with the other. No one was complaining that their property had been stolen or they had been hurt or affected in any way. That's quite different then someone breaking in to your car and stealing your stuff...and that's exactly what it sounds like the government did.
They have everything to do with each other. The ability of law enforcement to enter a home and sieze property is what was used in this raid, and that same law would be used to find a stolen car stereo in someones garage. And if you read the original report, companies from several states were complaining about the devices (or types of devices) being sold. As far as over the line, using semi-automatic weapons in a raid is standard operating proceedure and NOT at the discression of the officers wether or not to use. They have to have them and use them in the manner they did for the raid. (I know, I am/was certified as an urban warfare instructor for the Marine Corps. We teach the LAPD how to do raids - useing your weapon is not an option, it's a requirement. This is due to 30 years of research done by the FBI on how to prevent anyone from getting killed or hurt during a raid, which includes the people your raiding - it's best not to kill your suspects. Regaurdless of what kind of raid your doing, you do it the safest way, even if it might hurt someones feelings.)
In any case, it was still done unproffessionally, and they need to be retrained. Scuse my spelling... Like I said, I'm a Marine:)
While I tend to suspect the "hobbiest" nature of what they are selling, the way raids are conducted are out of hand. From Ramsey's description of what happened, it was unprofessional and indicitive of the nature of raids.
While I'm sure the 'feds' will get the majority of/. attention, bear in mind that they are doing their jobs as defined by law and doing raids as defined & requested by the investigators - who are doing their investigations at the request of private citizens who feel violated by one thing or another. They don't leave names because it would open them to retalliation (imagine having a whole group of 'experts' in survellance having it out for you...).
Basically, before you all start screaming holy hell and damn the government, try to bear in mind that the mentality and state of law enforcement and government has been set and continues to be set by private citizens (AKA individuals) with the motivation to change something they don't like. You don't want the government to be allowed to do raids, start a political action group and change the law. Just don't go crying to the police when your car stereo is in your neighbor kid's garage - and he won't give it back.
Now I'll have that missing ingredient for my cure to baldness! Mix that with a little of my infamous snake oil and my magic beans will spring to life! (evil laughter ensues) ctimes2

I remember a few years ago with the introduction of the PPro 200 there was an organized ring selling relabled 160's as P200's. They estimated 200,000 chips had been relabeled and sold and with the raids they found 500K more ready to go out the door. They were in business for around 6 months before Intel forced the investigation after so many complaints of thier chips burning up in Europe. The heart of that problem was the white ink intel used to mark the chips could be wiped off with a little alcohol or paint thinner, and a new label rubberstamped on with model paint. I thought they had fixed that by etching it in, are they still inking the chips? I'm running AMD (overclocked;)) so I wouldn't know.
I suspect that if the author had his way all religious groups would be muzzled and silenced, which oddly enough is what he is afraid of happening to him.
For those paranoid masses, the bible and most other religions are based on choice and freedom. Some people or groups would like to make decisions for you, but that does not make them holier than thou, rightious, or right. So get off your f*'n soap box and stop playing the victim of a conformist society, your welcome to play the friggin game or not, but just because it's developed with religous intent doesn't mean it's a violation of your freedom. The venomous overtone by the author over this makes me want to kick his a$$ strait to hell and back!
Point being - hatred never got anyone anyplace good so LET IT GO! It's not that big of a deal. And does anyone know why this is under the american flag as opposed to some sort of religious icon? Does this have anything to do with America other than being produced and developed here?
Because I got a copy on cd for 1.99. I also have redhat that I got for $60, that turned out not to be from red hat redhat but from mcMillian redhat and I couldn't find the support I needed. SO- Yep, a buck ninety nine! And wanting the full linux experience I didn't want to pay $80 for support I was led to believe I could get on the web. Ouch. If you want linux to succeed do us all a favor, once a week cruise through the newbie posts and answer 3 questions in full, without the RTFM since they probably don't know what manual your talking about. Once a week, or even just 3 questions a week. I do it, so you should too! My 2cents Jake
2000 years ago people ran around in loin cloths and threw spears at each other. Today we run around in designer loin cloths and throw small high caliber spears at each other. 200 years ago (ish) we burned or hung people because we suspected they were witches. Last week in Africa 6 (or was it 8?) people were killed because they were suspected of being witches. And 30-40 years ago we of the greatest nation on earth decided we should 'give' blacks and women equal rights, and we won't look at how that is today out of redundency. Should have happened a long time ago... Silly humans. I eagerly await the day you discover that you are just happless PAWNS in my game! Except for that anon. coward who discovered my secret set for the apollo moon landings. I shall have to have him removed...
Please note that the coward who posted this is a complete moron who should really look up the meaning of a word before he throws it out the net. I am guessing here, but I'll bet my linux distribution that this guy probably gets a government grant to go to school, a government handout to help with his rent, unemployment benifits, AND belongs to every anti-government group on his politically correct college campus. God I hate it when people try to use scary sounding words in interesting ways to grab the attention of those morons willing enough to listen because, jeez, he sounds like he knows what he's talking about! Bite me, and quit pretending to be passionate about something you are obviously judging by the headlines.
I don't need a 32" tv either, but I have one! And it has svideo in and out jacks plus it can 400x600 res so I can plug my pc (viper 330) into my tv and work on a 32 inch screen! Or play on a 32" screen. Whatever. A card as fast as the one they are claiming would make it look even better.
You forget that when you get cable, you pay for MTV (aka eMpTyV). They tried to make ISP's charge you because they have a (S#!ty) web page. Nice that they are leading the charge for internet taxation by private enterprise. Read the writing on the wall, it's probably sprayed on like Ricky Martin's hair color...
With Disney or Bill Gates to give away thousands of dollars and a trip to Disney world... in HONG KONG!? cooooool...... Sounds like seti@linus is about to become another e-mail legend.
I think it's understandable that they would want to do it, after all the IRA has set off a bomb or two. As for using it for financial gain, and everything else not related to terrorism, they should string up those who abused the system, not the agency that implemented it. Don't get me wrong, I loved Braveheart and think England should let Ireland go if they want to go, more power to ya (dresses and all) but I know everyone's going to be screeming bloody murder about privacy and free speech, etc. to which I say, listen to any conversation of mine you want. If you don't like what you hear you shouldn't have been listening. If you catch me doing something illeagal or dangerous, I have no one to blame but myself for committing the act. And like this is something we haven't been doing in America for the last 100 years...;)

...wonder if you've actually tried installations on either platform...
Responses like that make me think you are WAY too defensive, and can't read. The wizard/RPM point I was making was that for first time users, or those who don't care to use the command line, or for those who just don't give a $#i! as long as it gets done, wizards are easier. Plain and simple my friend, wizards do what most users can't.
Get over it.
And to Donovan below, Thanks! nice to see someone posting here who can demonstrate their knowledge (your web page) and be constructive. And he's not a "coward".
pardon me - but my a[??]! I'm a reletive newbie to Linux, a little less so to unix, and I would take an installation wizard from Winblows over an RPM any day. I'm still trying to figure out how to get gnome working, apparently I'm missing some files or something... that just doesn't happen with M$ wizards (assuming of course the app doesn't crash. A Technicality;) RPM may be more flexible, but to an end user (the majority of users)... So get real. In winblows you find the right icon, double click and your home free, or just stick the cdrom in the drive. In *nix you have to find the path you downloaded to, probably from the command line, find the path to install to, and then figure out if you installed all the dependant RPM's! And don't even start about mounting file systems!
