when you buy a product or service you expect that the product perform as indicated or as promised. this goes the same for medical care that you recieve from a doctor or physician.
now contrast this to the service's given by non-profit agencies / people. for example, lets say that you drop dead in a mall and have a heart attack because you have been eating Big Mac's for decades. along comes someone who knows CPR. this stranger is protected under the good samaratin (spelling?) act, so he/she can try to help you without seeking legal council and signing all the proper documents, and not have to worry about a law suit as long as he/she tries his hardest.
this is the way that open source should be classified, unless someone (like RedHat) specifically binds themselves into an agreement where the entity promises a service.
also if anyone has ever bothered to read the documentation with alot of opensource software they would soon realize that the disclaimers often blatantly state that the programs are "use at your own risk" programs.
Well i guess this is fitting... The "good guys" make laws the "bad guys" can get around (typical U.S. move, just look at the gun laws here for another example)... I just hope that the "bad guys" build Thermal Exhaust Ports into their Deathstars so that we can fly in there and blow them up. Of course it would be too much to ask that we all live in peace.

i also agree with you here, and i am no communist myself. but i am open to the idea of everybody working together to allow everybody to have everything that we want. now this will never happen ever because humans are stupid, but it is a nice thought now isnt it?:)
but we already knew that. now we know where to make fixes. now we have a new focus. this is a good thing, because next time the tests come around, we still may not win, but we ill do better that is for sure.
after all these tests dont really mean anything, the NT machines are nothing like what they would be in the real world. they are so pimped out on MS engineered steriods that you will find machines like them no where else on Earth. but our happy little linux machines are everywhere, and they dont need a team of monkeys working around the clock to make them run.
i reccomend people reading something i read today but i cant find the link, anyways it was about how linux under the conditions in the worst mindcraft test could outperform its internet connection even if it had like 5 T1's hooked up to it. so basically even though they say NT outperforms Linux by X % it doesnt matter because the linux machine can already outperform its own connections... somebody post this url again if you know what im talking about it is good reading.
he talks about the difficulty in partitioning hardrives in linux, well i guess he has never had to do the same for windows i know that i have had to many times... not to mention low level formats.
he talks about configuring ip addresses and the difficulty in doing so under linux. i configured my cable modem a couple weeks ago with no problems what-so-ever. DHCP did everything for me basically. Yesterday i helped a friend get his modem working. I had never done it before, but i just opened up kpppd and i filled in the blanks, and viola! it worked like a charm. also it wasnt hard at all. well i should say that it wasnt any more difficult than windows.
this is just a little criticism of his article.
the bottom line is that he didnt give linux the credit that it deserves. i know that i am more experienced than most PC users, but i dont see how linux can be that much more difficult than windows in the areas that the author talked about. after all my mother is learning linux in similar areas with no more hang-ups than when she learned windows a few years back and she has problems cutting and pastteing between windows.
yes linux is not the almighty flawless OS that some people make it out to be, but give it the credit it deserves.
whats wrong with being a collectivist or a communist? is there something wrong with wanting equality between everybody? or is it that you just dont like helping other people? food for thought...

it seems like there is alot of discontent here with people shunning the idea of a nice graphical install. ignoring whether caldera's install is good or bad, dont you think that it would be nice to have a more graphical install? it wouldnt have to look like windows but if it was similar that would be nice, wouldnt it? what if my older father wanted to try to install Linux. It would be alot easier on him if he had a graphical install that looked familiar to him. that way he wouldnt get intimidated so much by the new operating system. after all he is already stressed enough about having to learn how to use it after its installed.
everybody should be more constructive in their criticism. instead of saying "This install GUI is dumb, its only going to make more problems..." how about "They should have an option for GUI install or Traditional install..."
Some of you may also be right that the graphical install has alot more room for error currently, but in time that will be fixed, but not if people dont help out and be constructive. after all, i think the best OS on Earth should have a nice install GUI, does'nt it deserve it? i sure think so.
personally i like the fact that you can play tetris while it installs. that is a good idea, im surprised no one has thought of it before. well maybe they have, but i sure havent heard of it before.:)
this sounds alot like a couple of cartoons i used to watch... GO-BOTS and Transformers come to mind... maybe someday there will be a real life squad of decepticons running around blowing stuff up in the name of evil!!!! ROCK ON!
He knows nothing about organic agriculture or modern farming practices... He puts down organic farming which has been proven to be as productive as other modern farming practices (if it is done correctly). Herbicides get into the water, poison wells, give people cancer, kill the wildlife, all while the happy little bugs build up a resistance to the chemicals. Have you ever wondered why the prices of farm products change from season to season? It is all a result of the success of the farmers for that period. Organic farmers dont have this problem as bad as other farmers. i won't babble on anymore, if you want to know anymore about this i'm sure there is a library near you, but keep in mind the folly of not incorporating "organic" or environmentally friendly farming practices into agriculture. It will only hurt you in the long run, it has happened in Asia and the South Pacific with rice farming and the results have been devastating. I am not a grass-roots, tree-hugging, pot smoking, sandal wearing hippy, but i personally don't want to ruin all our topsoil like Kenya did!!!
however, i suppose i understand why this idiot would write such a thing. he is after all a windows user.
bottom line: china will have playstation 2 if they want it... so why argue about this obviously dumb law, hell there are dumber ones than this is some states. did you know its illegal to drive without a shirt on in NY state? even if you are of male gender. now isnt that just idiotic. i guess equality has finally gone too far.
i cant believe that you just said that mr. anonymous coward... maybe you should visit tibet and ask some of the older people what it was like to live in tibet in the 40's and the 50's...
I agree, when you have a problem, use irc. You would be surprised at how people are willing to help each other out (if you are not a rude a**-hole). Better yet you can idle in a chat room and if you hear someones plea for help and you know the answer spend 2 seconds and give them a hand.
Also use the HOW-TO's they are mirrored at like a thousand places over the globe, so there shouldnt be a problem finding them.
Join a linux mailing list. You dont ever have to post in it, but i am sure amongst the other junk email you have laying around your inbox that there is room for a mailing list email.
If there is a Linux User Group in your area contact them. You dont have to go to many meetings to get a world full of help from people who know linux. If you live in a city with a college in it also check there, i know alot of college students who use linux are active in Computer/Linux User Groups.
obviously freedom of speech protects most people and allows for the free flow of thoughts and ideas, etc. which is good, but i was talking about the government cracking down of hate group promoters/weapons information distributors not by censorship, but more to the likes of monitoring them to make sure that they are staying legal. that way when someone who has a web page which boasts of its criminal activity the government will do something about it. whether it is as simple as finding out if the web page is just a hoax, or actually busting up the group/gang's little party with a swat team visit.
i agree with the author of the article in that an OS shouldnt have to rely on third party software to stay optimal. e.g. disk defragmentation programs, anti-virus programs, and the like. bottom line is a robust, reliable, customizable OS. which is easy modifiable and usable. hmm sounds alot like something they tried to teach us in college about writing good software. the way i see it is that people will continue to endure second rate OS' until they are informed about what is actually out there. now come on, most computer users dont even know that linux, freebsd, and even unix exist. all they know is windows and mac and they probabally couldnt even tell you any differences between the two. i think that the public needs to be made more aware of what is actually out there, and then the public's expectations of an OS will rise. once the public has a clear expectation and makes a decision of what they want, business will provide for the consumers even if they have to work together.
people got the wrong idea from my post... i guess i should have stated my thoughts better. maybe i should have stated: i respect someone who breaks in and doesnt destroy data then gives a message to the sysadmin of the security loop-hole a million times more than someone who breaks in to destroy and steal. granted they are both unethical and wrong, but at least you are getting something positive out of the first of the two.
if you came to my house and used a paperclip to come into my back door when i was at work, and left a note of everything you did when i was gone so that i could fix the problem when i came home i would probabally be a little scared that someone broke in, but at least i know that i should fix my door. and big deal if you saw my underwear drawer when you were browsing around my house, as long as you dont tell people that i wear pink underwear im fine with it.:)
i think you got the wrong idea about my post. why do the hackers get so much media, when the porn peddlers get none. i personally think a child getting raped and then this picture being broadcast viz the internet is a little more important than someones credit card number being stolen. after all you can replace the credit card, you cant replace the child...
i totally agree with you on this one, breaking into any computer is unethical, illegal and wrong. howver sometimes there is no other way to get security improved. after all companies, organizations and governments very infrequently hire people to evaluate security and if they do, then they dont let the public know about it. but i do like the idea of hireing people to evaluate security, however it costs money, and money is always on a budget. will companies do the right thing and pay for their security, or will they wait until they get broken into... id rather have my government pay for its security, but who know what will happen?
