Shouldn't generic descriptive terms like 'explorer,' 'illustrator' 'word' and 'paint' be free for all to use?
No. To my understanding, trademarks refer to specific fields of usage. Illustrator is a perfect name for an illustration program. Adobe (actually Aldus, from whom Adobe bought Illustrator) got to it first, and is enforcing the mark against a party which is distributing an Illustrator program whose name differs only by affixing a "k" to make a cute pun. I'm sure Macromedia would be doing the same thing if somebody called their illustration program aFreehand. (of course I'd be very pissed at Adobe if they sued someone for calling their product Linux Illustrator, etc.)
*cough* And then Robby banned you from the system.;-) Hmmmm... I wonder how many of the passwords were "sendit2me", corresponding to the password used to get into the account registration system.
Aside: Isn't it odd that there is no obvious attempt to market optical-cable connections for e.g. modems, to eliminate the surge issue?
What would this be? Just a very short length of fiber with a cheap led at each end to convert from the electrical signal to the fiber? I'd buy one. Go forth and find ye' a bakcer.
EXCEPT when you live in a place where the climate isn't relatively stable. We poor SOBs in North Dakota have an average yearly temperature range approaching 150F. Frankly I'm not going to put my backups in my car when it's either -50F or 100F outside. Temperatures like that are more than enough to destroy most backup media.
If you want it, email me---I've got it on a CD (from Apple itself) somewhere. More than happy to dump it to an MPEG (or MOV) and put it somewhere you can nab it.
Pure genius, my friend. The data is identical, so just use a distributed client to populate the freedb by looking up in the CDDB. It would be futile for Gracenote to prove that FreeDB's entries were not keyed-in and submitted by users rather than pulled from the CDDD.
Of course what will happen is that the Gracenote folks will disallow access on any level to non-licensed clients. Not that this is bad---would just force everyone to use FreeDB.
MacSSH now supports SSH2 and port forwarding, and it's a snap to set-up. Under MacOS X, you should b eable to do it right from the terminal. (Std. disclaimer: I'm a graphic designer.)
Who makes a sub-$500 T-mount digital SLR? Are you missing an extra 0 on that amount? (Not trolling, really curious---I'd love to be able to use my f and t mount lenses on even a prosumer digital SLR.)
And don't forget iCab which is now Carbonized. I wish somebody (ie, iCab) would create a Galleon-esque Mac browser---just give me a browser based on Gecko. I don't need an integrated mail and news program; IM client; auction tracker (IE5 Mac); etc.
IE for MacOS X is in a horrid state of affairs right now, to the point where running IE5 in Classic is a better option.
A better comparisson would be Mozilla.9 and IE 5.0 running under MacOS 9.1 (not in Classic -- machine booted into MacOS 9.1) In that environment, IE wins hands down as the speed demon. Mozilla seems very slooooooow on window operations under MacOS 9.1
Yes, but you're forgetting something: Remember what happened last time a US rival placed large rockets in Cuba? You think I'm kidding? Just watch Canadian Bacon
Say what you may about the quality of their product, but OnStream still exists in form. Old company died, new company rises from the ashes. Basically the old company tanked and was restarted by old company's investors.
Yes. I'm originally from southwest North Dakota... many of the pickup trucks my grandparents used on their farm were converted from diesels over to some sort of compressed natural gas (I have no clues as to what) in the late '70s, early '80s. Supposedly the conversions increased mileage substantially without sacrificing power (important for when you're actually using a pickup to haul things other than your ego) or increasing engine wear.
That was 20 years ago, and the retrofit could be done locally and cheaply. Give the technology the 20 years and install it from the factory---I wonder how good it would be now.

Piqued my interest. I have use for a nonpermanent, easily removable spray-paint to do some protest art. Does anyone know where I can order a few cans of this stuff? (Unlike IBM's version, I'd need something that would wash off easily with water and a detergent.)
Mea culpa. Maybe GNIllustrator would be a good rename :)

My bad - I thought they scored Illustrator at the same time that they did PageMaker.

Still happens---we just bought AvidDV to run on a Wintel box* and it came with a dongle.
* It's running NT Workstation. I know, pain. But Avid is like an OS unto itself anyway.

As an added bonus, this would also put a damper on dictionary bots that scan for available (or soon expiring) domains.
