Great Review!
I have read previous versions(In Portugese) and one of the main reasons I bought the book was because it had documentation via examples of issues I was trying to resolve on my own machine.
So while in Brasil I saw a copy and snagged it...
Oddly enough, all 'code examples' were in english while the explanations were in Portugese...anyhow, the book is a GREAT resource and your review definately did justice to the time and experience illustrated in the book.
Hopefully SOON!
Phone Companies Suck a Big FAT Wad!
All they do is rape consumers and then sell their contact info to F'n telemarketers and credit card companies to try and sell them crap they don't need and time-share idiots...
Plus telephone lines could better serve us for MORE BANDWIDTH!!! =) Eba!!!
I haven't been able to find out a whole lot about this NIMDA virus, but was having a LOT of trouble connecting to my ISP...(dedicated cable connection)...only machines having difficulty connecting were the Windows machines...the linux boxes were connecting fine...tried to find some info on NIMDA, but symantec had little to no info as did mcafee...anyone got any suggestions on where to go for info? I'm assuming I'm infected and that my ISP is kick'n my arse off because of it...NAV 2001 with the latest DAT didn't find anything on the systems though...
Oh, and why on earth do you need a monitor to do the install??
I'll tell ya why you need a monitor to do the install...
so that when the first machine is up and running you can download ROBOCODE and do some javabot simulations on your new cluster and see how many battles you can simulate in 1 hr. =)
in order to have a backdoor into a crypto program
the crypto program become obsolete and you might as well send plain text instead of wasting vital CPU time encrypting something when that time can be used running ROBOCODE simulations =)
If a built in firewall, built in CD burning, built in media playing software, built in web browsers and built in file viewers of various sorts are OK under Linux how can any Linux user who values logic honestly say it's "EVIL(!)" when Microsoft does it?
The reason being is because they CHARGE you for it. Thus monopolizing the software market for THEIR own OS. THIS is the evil inherent in the system =)
I'm not sure I'm ready to tell those kids whose parents didn't come home last week that they and others down the road just have to suck it up because people may be unwilling -- even temporarily -- to lose any measure of privacy.
I'm ready to tell them and everyone else...GET OVER IT...life WILL go on...and the "NEED" to invade privacy is a WANT.. not a need...
people in control just want MORE control...and will use ANY EXCUSE to obtain it...
and I have NEVER seen 'liberties' given back that were TAKEN...
Oh I couldn't agree more!
Put the police in an airport where they can harass innocent airline passengers instead of motorists who constantly break the law by speeding and driving under the influence!!!
No...I think not...More people have died in the past X (I'll let you pick the number) of years from drunk drivers and excessive speeding on our motorways than have died from this ATTACK...
Let the police do their job...Airports SHOULD BE FAA domain...therefore let them retain their OWN security/police/taskforce personel to uphold their own mandates of heightened security...
but DO NOT take the overworked/underpaid/underappreciated police-officers of our local law enforcement and submit them to manning metal detectors and airport checkpoints...what greater insult could they receive...oh...traffic duty I guess...
maybe chock full of quotes on pretty much every damn thing concerning them at the time...
But before you go jump'n on a slavery band wagon...Look at other countries such as Brasil who had about 5 times the number of slaves working in their coffee and sugar plantations than the U.S. had in tabacco and cotton...
Don't play this 'holier than thou' crap without all the facts being in place...
The review stated that the book didn't go into much detail or specifics, but was more of a general overview of theory and practicum with a case-study of implementation...
Exactly what BEGINNING or aspiring if you will,
programmers NEED to develop their knowledge base.
ALSO!!! This sets the man up for a sequel...or someone else who knows the specifics and detailed aspects of the APIs etc...thus he gets royalties on TWO book:) What a great move eh? =)
Personally I feel he should hook up with RedHat or Suse(take your pick of Linux Dist.) and bundle his book with their packaged products =)
*shrugs* Just a thought.
I feel that if you are developing commercially that it is your obligation to make things as easy for the END USER as possible...
BUT!!!
If you are developing for an open-source project and the like and are contributing to the PROGRESSION of the source...then code it right the first time and let someone else with more time on their hands and the NEED port it for bassackward compatability =)

--From the Think before you Speak Department--
Bush is a LEADER not a speaker..
No written or unwritten rule exists saying
that good leaders are good speakers or vice-versa.
I have faith that 'The Bush Administration' NOT George W. Bush, will do what is best for AMERICA...not for you...not for me...but for AMERICA.
If you want a good speaker, vote for Jessie Jackson next time he runs...
But you'll be stuck with a crappy leader if he wins...
Yeah, but he still missed the bus...
Just cuz ya got freedom of speech doesn't mean
you shouldn't think before speaking...
