  1. What a Scientific method... on Glass-Eating Microbes · · Score: 1

Show me a microbe THEN tell me they actually exist instead of guessing that since there is 'biological matter' attached to the glass that there must be a microbe eating it.

first off, i'd just like to say, i love it when a hardcore networking article gets posted to slashdot, the number of responses is so much lower due to the userbase having no experience with the subject; and mindless pontificating and chest beating (as in anti microsoft/pro linux articles) doesn't cut it with this subject matter.

I couldn't agree more...unfortunately I sometimes get lost in the banter of techno-babble that spews forth from the fingertips of those who know not how to write a technical article in 'understandable' english for those who might not know everything there is to know about networking and the like. Napster was the ULTIMATE distribution center, we NON-CD purchasers could finally find complete albums that were decent instead of CDs with 2 good songs and 14 pieces that a 3yr old with kitchen utensils could sound better than(vocals included). FIRST think about the needs and wants of the LISTENERS...find out WHAT they want and start providing it instead of just flooding the market with shitty CD's that have 1 or 2 good songs...

As for the 'art' going away...who the hell is he trying to kid? maybe we'll get more quality instead of quantity...is that so bad? I think not, I think it is what needs to happen to the music/record industry...they have enjoyed exploiting listeners for long enough, and it's time we all stood up for our rights.

Most *nix users I know take an active role in the administration of their machines and are generally more educated in computers than MS product users. This alone makes it more difficult to create a general havoc exploit such as CodeRed and Nimda, let alone the fact that people were coding and developing *nix OS's before MS was a twinkle in Bill's eye. Thus, if a worm were to be made, the very nature of *nix's is a defense in and of itself, because the OS has forced the 'home user' to become more aware and knowledgeable about the beast of a machine they are using instead of taking everything for granted(the very reason *nix is not in every household and most likely never will be)...people don't want to come home from a long day of work and have to THINK about maintaining their computers...they want the quick and easy way out...which just so happens to have a quick and easy way to enter/attack...but that is the tradeoff for ignorance...and as we say...it is bliss.

How can a person who uses a machine for the sole purpose of keeping in contact with their loved ones and playing card games be showing a blatant disregard of sysadmin responsibilities?

I don't remember reading anything dictating that once you buy a computer that you are expected to maintain it's system integrity, constantly patch vulnerabilities, and check for viruses after every download or e-mail attachment you receive...

Perhaps a couple of free weekend seminars at the local town-hall/community center for free...sponsor'd by local ISP's or technology businesses is a better response to just cutting them off. The DMZ idea is great , but the users need to be EDUCATED not punished because of their ignorance.
