  1. Vertical MIPS on World's Most Powerful x86 Supercomputer Boots Up in Germany · · Score: 1

What is the most powerful 1 processor machine?

There are problems that many processors can't handle as well as single processors, so I was wondering what is the KingKong of processors.

Some problems are inherently best handled by many processors (weather, seismic analysis, 3D processing, keeping websites up when having DOS attacks, come to mind) so the many little processors are great. Still I admire the large processor that can crunch more than anything else.

  3. Re:You're gonna have to patent it on How Do I Put an Invention Into the Public Domain? · · Score: 1

I agree the best way would be to get a patent then release the license into the PD. This is basically what happens to expired patents. (My son has one for an invention he had in elementary school, he was in high school before it was granted.)

The problem is, the process is LONG (multi-year in my experience) and very expensive (the one my son got was done pro bono but it would have been about $20KUS about 10 years ago).

The current patent process is onerous and discriminates against the 'little guy'. I would like to see patents go back to a 'fee' for service basis to cover expenses and not a 'profit' basis for the government. It may not be but it sure seems like 'fees' are not so high that only ideas with significant profit potential (or companies with deep pockets that do patent protection as part of their business model) can afford the process.

A 'garage inventor' fee structure that give limited coverage for say 7 years, extendable to 14 for minimal fees, and extendable after that to the current 'protection' limits by 'paying up' to the current level of fees would be pretty equitable.

Just my $64K (.02 cents after inflation).

  4. Copyright on How Do I Put an Invention Into the Public Domain? · · Score: 1

Publish your invention in a publication, or write a 'book' about it. Publish the book and ensure a copy is sent to the Library of Congress (you probably need to get an LC number and possibly an ISBN). In your copyright area, mention that the idea is covered by (your favorite copyleft) concept usage authorization document. (Creative Commons, GPL, whatever). At least that is my idea.

You might contact the USPTO at http://www.uspto.gov/main/contacts.htm and ask. You might also suggest they publish it on their web site. Make sure they understand you want to have it included as 'prior art' for patent and/or copyright purposes.

Making it also available as prior art for international patents and copyright purposes may be different, but the USPTO might help there too.

IMHO, if it is defined as a motor vehicle by the states definition (a legal thing that does not have to have any bearing with reality), and the 'user' exceeds the 'boundaries' of the laws, then they are due a ticket.

In this case, I wonder if 'public intoxication' might not be a better charge. Give the guy a ride home, and have his 'bar stool' towed. The empound charge will probably be more than the intoxication fine, and will probably be more than the value of the 'vehicle' by the time he sobers up.

We OBVIOUSLY must stop this... in our climate and mentality of doing more with less, having less is the only correct answer! We must export this and pay other countries to take it so we can have less ourselves even if we did the work and provided the resources, and others countries don't want it! Possibly we can just use it to make sea water into hydrogen and oxygen, oh no, we might find out that increasing the amount of them as free gasses in the environment might lead to more global mediocrity , or is that warming, or is it cooling? Who cares, we are all chicken little and scared of change ... and if you are not you are the problem. ... If we have 'enough' then how are the 'haves' going to 'have more' and the 'withouts' going to 'have less'? We can't give it away... no one would make a profit...

yea, it will be interesting to see how they provision a 10 or 100 or Gig link to a neighborhood and put 6 or 8Meg to each house, but once they get a thousand houses on there, not everyone can download their different pr0n or soap operas at the same time and get their 'full bandwidth'.

The only issue I have is the 'traffic shaping' not related to bandwidth but type of bandwidth usage.

Bandwidth is kind of like water. If everyone wants to use it at once, no matter what you are allowed, it may not be there. It's not an easy thing to deal with. (I worked for a startup ISP years ago, ... bandwidth allocation was a politically sensitive topic back then too).

  9. Both - within constraints on Engineering School Grads - Tradesmen or Thinkers? · · Score: 1

Frank W. Olin College of Engineering ( http://www.olin.edu/ ) near Boston just graducated their first class last spring. They are acredited now. The big thing they have done is to re-engineer the process of training engineers. They focus on the core engineering diciplines, mechanical, electrical, and civil, and only work with undergraduates.

For the most part, they start doing 'hands on' engineeering, and support it with theory as it makes sense. They also put in a focus on being well rounded, with some reasonable liberal arts requirements and business.

From what I see, they are looking at putting out engineering entrepenurs that can work in any kind of environment.

Even when I was in college 30+ years ago now, the emphasis was more on teaching people how to think and learn on their own as technology changes. rather than just how to get it done with todays technology.

From what I have seen, focusing on 'certifications' and 'classes' for industrial training, only teaches people how to work now and take home a paycheck. Not how to learn.

IMHO, College should prime the pump to give you a supply of knowlege for life, not just give you a tub of knowlege to use that will drain, then you must be religated to a materially empty life, rather than refilling your understanding and knowlege continuously for life.

It goes back to the old maxum of 'Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.'

I have run into many people that still percieve much education as 'wasteful' because it doesn't focus on the latest 'technology' but teaches a method of thinking. I still believe they are missing the boat.

Another option, is get wirewrap set of sockets, and roll your own buss :) ... it is fast but not cheap. Wirewrap also has a limited life (10 or so years I think) in 'normal' environments. That is why it is best for prototype environments.
