I've never had a Sony DVD player, but I can not be happier now that I own a PS3 (the cheapest) only for playing Blu-ray discs. I bought the "dvd" remote control, of course.
Some gigs of pictures in the hard drive is a nice thing too.
I'd better say you can not kill something that has not born yet.
For me it's Linux and Solaris on my servers, MacOS on my laptop, programming Windows to pay the rent.
Good choices. I use XP on my laptop, though most of the time, but I switch to Mandriva when I have to code something.
I'm a big linux lover, it's a great platform for servers and I found it a great platform to teach many things (firts contact with unix for example) but on desktop it's still far behind windows and mac.
well... if the idea is to have linux as desktop, only linux, how could someone do that?
I'm not a Wine expert, but, I think it needs windows to be installed to run the applications. At least, to install them. If so, the problem is not solve for linux yet:-(
And sorry, no, cheap knockoffs like the GIMP don't really go far in this area.
I really like linux as a server. I've been using it for around 8 years now. And I've gave it a shot as desktop. I often use it as desktop computer... but every time that I have to use Adobe Photoshop, I see the big difference.
Even if Linux -maybe- it's not intended to be for "everybody" as windows apparenlty is, think about a company that wants that "everybody" secretaries AND EVEN LAWYERS:-) use linux for dily use, to save some money, and for stability. End "stupid" users deserve to be in touch with that beatiful thing linux is.
In the other way (even if I like Mandrake) the terminal and WindowMaker (I like XFCE SO much, too) it's enough for the most admin/network things.
Distance.

You know what, yours is a good point.
:-)
HD-DVD sounds like "the DVDs we have now, but with something better".
Blu-ray sounds like "something really new...a technology based on a futuristic laser beam from out of space"
I strongly disagree about saying that upconverting is "similar" to real hi def.
Not true at all. *Maybe* in small TVs, but in general, the difference can be easily seen.
I upconvert my dvd collection and they look very good, but, as soon as I see a Blu-ray movie, 1080p, difference get obvious.
Agree. Blu-ray is definitely winning the HD battle, mostly because Sony did something I consider intelligent: every PS3 plays Blu-ray discs.

"Dvorak? Isn't he the reporter from Kazakhstan?" --> you really made me laugh... :-)
Me too. I'm very happy with 2008. I hope they package KDE4 soon for 2008.
+1

I have not found anything decent related to music production/mixing.
Nothing at all.
I'm a linux user and I like it as a server, but, regarding desktop, you hit the point.
Even a 5%, 10% is almost nothing.
je je, right to the point.
Do they think no one has study the human ear and its limitations?
I think the same. Maybe Linux/Tech blogs/magazines need to be filled with something theses days.
regarding the check for the CD.. Do I have to issue it to "the new internet Company" ?
Agree 100%.
It's just a money machine.
Have we all already forgot about the apocalyptic disasters Y2K was supposed to cause and did not happened ?
Agree.
I love linux as a server. I encourage people to use it.
I use it often as mi desktop computer too.
I agree, however, about linux failing at the desktop.
Many things have been added through time, but, some I found useless, while simple, very useful things have been left behind.
I mean: I do not want my desktop to spin; I just want it to let me copy/paste between applications.
Copying from dia to OO, for example. I'd love it.
just what I was thinking about... The site owner is yelling that traffic "is killing us" and it has just got /.ed...
Good point: At least, I don't.

Definetely.
You are very right. I'd add VISIO too.
