Well, the only reason I care is that it doesn't work correctly. It's a problem, perhaps in the kernel, that, while insignificant, is still a problem. I'd like to see Linux be as nifty as it could be. I can see the kind of treatment people would give windows if it blue screened right after blinking "It's now safe to turn of your crappy winbox".

I've got this one computer at home that crashes EVERY time it hits runlevel 0. I think it's got somehting to do with apmd, but anyways, it's one of those computers that can turn themselves off through software. Normally, the last thing you see is:

    Stopping all md devices.
    System is halted.
    Power down.

And at that point, you either have to turn it off yourself, or the software (apmd?) does it for you. Well this one box I have (a crappy HP I got for free) gets right to the words "power down" and then it dumps all sorts of crap onto the screen, including the values in the CPU's registers, and what I assume to be some crap from memory. What I'm thinking here though, is that since all the filesystems are already unmounted, LKCD wouldn't make a lick of difference for me. Am I right in assuming this?

Also, try to look for a doctor that graduated from Palmer, it's like the Harvard/Yale for Chiropractic. Oh yeah, an excercise you can do, is put a rubber band around your hand (kind of like on your fingernails) and keep opening and closing your hand. It counteracts the motion that normally causes carpal tunnel (the tightening down of the hand). By the way, I'm no doctor, so talk to a doctor and talk to a chiropracter, then decide which is best...

I'm not saying we should switch, I definately would, but think of the trouble it might cause newbies to have to switch to a new GUI right after they learned one "not-so user friendly" GUI. You can set up Linux as the proxy server for the LAN/WAN or as a profiler, or as your web server...

You don't need to set up the clients with Linux, generally most users aren't very computer knowledgable, and Windoze is right for them. Linux should be used on the servers and in mission critical applications.

If you call up the sysadmins on base and ask them to reboot a *NIX server, the answer you'll hear is "I thought that box wasn't an running NT". The techie people who know what works and what doesn't unfortunately aren't the same people that make the decisions. In my neck of the woods, Commercial Off the Shelf software is being used more and more than stuff we develop.

In order to get the Linux box in my cubicle, I had to whine and whine for a month and write up all sorts of crap before it was approved. Since then, I've been coming up with all sorts of excuses to use it. They use Red Hat on a few servers, like the profiling box and others, but for some strange reason, they put NT on the proxy, which explains why the web is down half the time....

The funny thing is though, the military is supposed to buy from the lowest bidder and spend as little money as possible, and here we have a free OS that could be used and they go NT (WTF?!). Oh, they tend to think maintenence costs are higher for *NIX systems too (another WTF?!).

Hardware like this just adds to the bloat found in software these days. They build a faster CPU, and then tax it with crap to where the CPU is just as useless as the previous generation one. It's a sad thing to see companies putting this crap into their computers. It's always better to have peripherals take the load off of CPU's just like playing a game with a 3Dfx card as opposed to using software rendering.
