As an anecdotal evidence: back in the day (Opera 3.60) it did not support unicode (few browsers did) and it displayed russian pages in Unix encoding (KOI8) all quirky. I did not have source for Opera, but the binary was quite clear enough so that I could hack in a menu item and optional transcoding subroutine (disassembler, debugger, hex editor - usual tools) - I'm not making that up. You know - Mozilla may be open source but it is bloated enough that I don't want to fuck around trying to make it compile on my machine (and I'm not sure if it compiles with anything other that MSVC compiler for Windows). So - in this sense Opera was more open for me. The difference between binary and source code is more quantative than qualitative.
They tend to try different combinations of features and then check users feedback. They had built-in ICQ client once, for example. If no-one uses something it will probably go away.
So fucking what? If a limited set of developers kept in a single company or scattered around the globe - what difference does it make? Have you submitted any patches to Firefox? Didn't think so.
(Ok, ok - maybe I troll a bit, but seriously? It's a good and free to use browser. They even have FreeBSD binaries... Closed source or not - some appreciation is due methinks... What would _you_ do with the source if it were available?)
Do it! There are oh so many things that you think are brain-dead and could be made better and slicker and everything... But once you try to do something, 99.99% of the time you just create your own mess. Not that you shouldn't try.
a) If you have several dozens CDs then go with those CD-bags (I don't know what you properly call them) with book-style leaves inside where you put in those shiny discs.
b) If you have several hundreds/thousands of CDs/DVDs then just store them on spindles - those usually transparent cylindric boxes they sell blank media in. Keep a database though so you have some chance to find what you need!:)
I also have a dozen or so empty slim cases for moving things in and out.
$(SUBJ) is if software development would move from native code or P-Code or Java to something that does source compilation stage also in JIT (I am awed with what Psyco does, but I'm sure there are many other possible options). See - it's nice that OOo or Mozilla are open source but it's sure as hell that I don't have dedication to download source for it, dependencies and spend a day or two just trying to compile it. Now - if this software would be available in "runnable source" form then I think we will have 10x number of developers compared to now. As it stays - barrier to entry is too high.
I think at least Python in its _current_ form is suitable for writing an office suit or browser, not to mention "simpler" apps. And I don't see why other languages cannot achieve same level of efficiency.

To be fair it's more up to database engine - and they _do_ seriously differ in speed despite what you might think otherwise (EG, MSSQL is up to 100 times slower on lots of simple selects than MySQL or Firebird - those I have extensive experience with).
But, right, PHP is slow. That's the second reason why I wish to move my web-development to Python. Python+Psyco kick ass unbelievably (speed-wise) - add "import psyco; psyco.profile()" to the end of your site.py:)
Oh, and the first reason is that PHP gets messy past about 2000-5000 lines of code, no namespaces you know, no first-class functions, no closures of course etc... The only consolation they may have for a moment is that Ruby may be even slower.
Who would be at loss? Just use your imagination! For once - would you agree to move your retirement age if you start replacing your organs with new one? Would you agree that everyone should be able to do that or only people with money? Since we are dreaming do you really want to see talking (and walking) heads of 200 year old people around? I dunno - maybe they'll have something nice to say or teach but I doubt. Reminds me of some Simpsons episodes....
Anyway - these matters are complex and neither you and me know more than other people. Just notice that even such "harmless" decisions as "1 child per family" program in China have some not-quite-expected consequences where there many, many more boys being born than girls. They are heading to a big social crisis in 15-20 years this way (and they know it). Expect arrival of single horny chinese young men hunting for your daughters wherever you live.
- GPL works are bloody free! If some company is too _greedy_ to use other peoples work that they are happy to share and want to make some money out of it saving on its own labour, that we find that unethical.
- Music, movies etc are not free! And since most people believe that the prices are over-the-top on those they sure are inclined to seek cheaper methods of obtaining it. Also - most of the time the rules how they "sell" the content to you are queer - eg: try to return a CD or DVD you bought (and did not like at all) to the shop. Yeah... good luck. OTOH - if the shop would refuse to exchange/fix your broken refridgerator or whatever other physical goods they would be in serious trouble. Also - there really is no way for you or me to buy "intellectual property". As you may have noticed they bloody "license" it to you. What more - most of the money you pay for those go not to the talented (or not) authors but to those lazy suits (see point 1) who can't do much except sucking out the money and file those lawsuits.
Ah... Ok. The key word is "greed" (as you may have noticed).
DualCore MacBook with 1 Gig RAM and 80 Gig HDD costs USD 1250. I take it that you are ready to sell me about equally equiped PC book (don't forget wireless, pls) at $417. Deal?
Microsoft: what do you want in Vista General consumer market: we want security, we want more neat graphics (like OSX!), we want better sleep mode, we want more games Developers: we want a better and robust programming framework that's capable and fully OOP
Care to provide some reference or is this kinda those FAQ that are actually NAQ (Never A.Q.)?
You say "back breaker" and I imagine 300 pounds wrestler doing piledrivers and shit on poor mice.... Ooh.. Nice.
Be thankful they don't do test on GIRLFRIENDS!
But on the second thought - nevermind....

Steve, here's a fucking chair! Calm down!

Let's take MHT issue: Opera developers did it while Mozilla guys did not (while being bombarded with requests). How's that for an argument?
I hate those jokes, but are you from France perchance?

Hey! My cellphone camera lacks dynamic range!! I'll stick with my DSLR....
(Oh. Every browser's download manager sucks compared to separate utilities. But they have different target audiences I guess...)

Open in Opera, then in Firefox. I don't know how to answer you better.
Oh, don't even bother with MSIE...

It does have simple and effective ad-blocker.
Go to fucking hell away then. What's your problem?

Well, but he did not purchase his Opteron, did he? That's all Intel cares about for right now.
Just rewrite it. Reading others' code is for wimps.
Windows Vista Aero Glass.
