Because for quiet sometime time Microsoft was failing miserably with Windows Defender. It was coming in at the bottom of AV-Test's testing for many years, it has only be recently that it has picked itself up out of last place. The results have been similar with av-comparatives results with Microsoft being one of the bottom results only recently moving upwards towards the middle of the pack.
In both companies tests BitDefender (which is what I use) and Kaspersky came out towards the top of the pack.
No it wasn't that, i remember it failing over and over the AV test, but recently it got better, but still for some reason i decided to use BD.
In other words, is there a reason for me to install Kaspersky instead of Sophos or Bitdefender, which I both used in the past? (If you reply, please do NOT mention anything about US politics or Russia - thank you!)
I'm currently using BitDefender Free, quite happy with it, lightweight, silent, no ads, no popups, works quite well, and i'm also interested how it compares to this new Kaspersky Free AV
Now everything is "nation-sponsored", so-called expert now throw this at everything without handing a single proof of it's claims, and sometimes not even making sense.
You'd think that by 2017 this kind of linux vs. Microsoft childish discussion would be a thing of the past, but damn.
Now, regarding TFA, it amazes me how long it took to reach/., i've read this on other portals days ago.
Walled gardens sure suck. Having to deal with millions of opportunities to be infected with malware is a small price to pay for... native code pr0n apps.
Whenever i read someone saying that they rather have the power to run anything from anywhere i wonder what is it so great that you want to run and isn't on the Play Store?, 99.9% of the apps on the store are bullshit and only a few of them are really worth it, so, what is it that you get outside the Store that's so great?.
This isn't a criticism on said philosophy, i really don't care what others do neither why they do it, i just find it curious, like there's something that i'm missing, most apps i download i end up deleting a few minutes later since they're crap
Not a solution. Before, I could listen to music at my desk all day long as long as I kept my phone charging. I can only do that now if I go pay up for some wireless headphones.
Then i'm afraid that you shouldn't have bought the phone, you knew what you were buying don't you?, again, not defending Apple, we all know they did this to making money out of 3rd party accessories manufacturers, but if you want to use the device in a way that you know is not meant to, then why did you bought it?.
I would much rather pay for this case that allows you to use your own headphones, AND give extra battery life, than be ripped off by Apple forcing you to buy their extra probably highly inflated in price box of trick. Dropping the headphone jack is just a cynical marketing strategy to make people give even more money to Apple.
Doesn't the built in adapter allow you to use 3.5mm headphones?, We all know that Apple dropped the 3.5mm jack to make money out of third party accessories manufacturers, yet they provide you with a solution out of the box. Not defending Apple, i have a 6s Plus, think is a great device, yet a don't really like Apple.
you can use hangouts just fine on a desktop, altough a real desktop app would be better, they have a chrome extension which works pretty fine, plus you can use it within gmail which is a plus.
Yeah, i know, as i said, i do use it to talk to one person, but i hate that i have to run chrome to use it.
Of course you didn't get it from the story, because you didn't RTFA. See the linked "reneging on some of those promises". The very first paragraph of that article
Alongside the end-to-end-encrypted Incognito Mode, the Allo team talked about bold new message retention practices, storing messages only transiently rather than indefinitely.
Saying alongside incognito means they are talking about something other than incognito.
But that wasn't in the article, was it?, it was in another page, the article is poorly written
The quote is misleading. What Google is backing off is the idea that ALL messages would be transient.
Now only Incognito ones will be.
I really didn't follow Google's advertisement of Allo, so i really didn't understand the point of the article, if Google actually advertised what you said, now i get it, i just didn't get that from the story.
When Google first unveiled its Allo messaging app, the company said it would not keep a log of chats you have with people when in incognito mode.
The version of Allo rolling out today will store all non-incognito messages by default
The first sentence talks about INCOGNITO messages and the second about NON-INCOGNITO ones.
Now if Signal did video calling, and somehow implemented a desktop app I'd be set. The lack of the desktop app means my wife won't use it because effort to go get her phone to msg me.
I don't know Signal, but i don't use Hangouts because of the same reason
Everyone I know that used Google Talk switched to Hangouts for the simple reason it was a continuation (though the EOL of the desktop application in favour of a shitty browser plugin was dumb), Allo/Duo however is completely moronic as they exist in parallel are disconnected. I haven't installed Duo, and won't be installing Allo, I'm sure as a Nexus user they'll eventually appear on my devices but I'll disable them at that point.
In my case, everyone that used GTalk do not use Hangouts, unless it's strictly necessary, i use it to talk to one person only, and i'm not happy about it.
I'm still trying to understand why did Google kill GTalk, replaced with that stupid Hangouts, and never release a desktop app, they had everything going with GTalk and for some reason they decided to kill it, now everyone else has switched to other services.
Probably because it's a lot easier to strip-mine the user's privacy when the data passes through a Google server.
Well, that move didn't work that well for them, they just lost most of its users, one would think that after such a big mistake they'd have learned, but no

I'm using Windows Defender and have similar experience.
I can't remember why i choose BD over WD, i know there's something
I'm currently using BitDefender Free, quite happy with it, lightweight, silent, (...)
So I gather you're a Windows prod...erm, user. Why the fuck a Windows user has to do with Slashdot?
Oh, i understand your confusion, i'm just in Slashdot waiting for the "Year of Linux desktop" article to pop up.
[ ] Bitdefender Free
[ ] AVAST Free

...and an Android phone is? (Hint: designed by Google in California)
Android is, phones, not necessarily, it depends on the manufacturer.

I'm amazed on how unreliable it is...

Wow, you make one innocent joke and get downvoted to oblivion, chill people, damn
They just seem to be unable to let go the past, FF, W7.

Finally deleted my Yahoo & Flickr accounts today. Nothing of value was lost...
I can't even log in, my yahoo account has an old phone number, and i can't log in, since they don't provide any alternative methods
There are stupid people in the world
I think I had one about a century ago. Haven't logged onto it since. If I did have anything on it, it's waay out of date.
Most of us are in the same situation, had one centuries ago, haven't used it in years
Definitely time to start dropping the Yahoo accounts, people.
Start?, Who has one?
