    Because the error rates for each style of ballot counting are fairly well established- exclusive of deliberate fraud which is easier with hand counting than machine counting.

    Ultimately, it's a question of scalability. People expect to get election results the same night, and without errors. Despite the bad reputation punch cards got in Florida, they have a much lower error rate than hand counting hand written X's.

    Optical readers of x-marks-the-spot ballots are possible, but would also have a higher error rate just due to the variety of ways people can write an X.

    The US does not have a parlimentary system. We do not vote for parties, we vote for people. That means the typical ballot has many more than one item on it.

    My ballot, for example, was several pages of names for fifteen or twenty different offices. In other years, when there were multiple proposals as well as candidates, most of the punch card was used.

    Yeah, just draw an X. That'll work.

    Pyraminx was trivial. Rubic's Revenge, though - /that/ was a puzzle of evil. I got to the point where I could solve the Cube in under a minute, but it always took me hours to get the Revenge into a solvable configuration.

    The BBC claims that only 2000 of the ballots were delivered - but it gives no evidence of this.

    Certainly there are a lot of people complaining, so presumably some number have not been delivered. But how do we know that that's true of all of them? It's quite possible that the vast majority simply have not been returned yet and this is just another trick to cast doubt on the election process.

    Let's see, Clinton was accused of sexual harrassment, rape, corruption, firing innocent civil servants to install his own cronies and the murder of one of his own staff members - and that was during his first term in office.

    that's more apt than you realize. After all, how many times have I gone jogging down the forest trail and seen every small furry critter flee in a blind panic because I happened to pass near by.

    In other words - for every time a rabbit correctly "senses danger" they over-react to 99 completely benign events.

    but IIRC, SmallTree wrote the software for them; all the IB vendors use Mellanox's chips for their HCAs, they differentiate themselves with the software the lay on top of them.

    Voltaire's okay, but you'll notice that Small Tree isn't reselling their gear, they're reselling Infinicon's gear. ICS sells the switches and shared IO gear you need to put it all together.

    As I understand it, the advantages of IB over gig-E are lower latency and scalability.
