In lots of countries that do not speak english, french, german or spanish natively, children have mandatory classes in a foreign languages (most often english). In my country, we begin at the age of 10. Children are excellent at learning languages, the younger the better.
An interesting idea is (I don't know where I heard about it, possibly Nicholas Negropontes "Being Diital"), that if we could present scientific problems and issues to them in a "natural language", and they could interact with each other, do assignments and work with computers in that language, perhaps that could be a good base for an evolving understanding of technical issues?
Perhaps the gap between the logics of math and science and the rules of a language is too large, perhaps there are lots of didactic challenges that cannot be supported by a language. But it's an interesting thought to think in languages rather than equations.
What else can be done? The settlements they pay are jokes to MS (even when talking billions). Why did the "splitting MS up into multiple companies"-approach get dumped completely a few years back?
Applets are bad for a LOT of things. But this is one thing they would work really well for. Using an applet:
1. The client PC runs the program in a sandbox 2. Most client PC's don't need additional software installed (if written for JDK 1.1) 3. The user does not need to know how to invoke a Java application 4. There's no administrative overhead in iniating the application, just go to a URL
MS wanted to make Java ubiquitous by making it the standard platform for writing Windows apps. In order to do this, they needed to add a few features (like delegates -- function pointers, essentially).
What? Why? The features you request are nice-to-have, no more no less.
Sure, people would end up writing "Java" programs that wouldn't necessarily run on other JVMs, but who cares -- they would be Windows programs anyway!
If MS had made an com.microsoft.* package hierarchy, everything would be fine. They could just as well have done this. Instead they made an implementation where they bastardized among others the core java.lang.* package hierarchy. This pollution of the API was what the fuss was all about. MS could have played nice but they didn't.
Don't worry, in another couple of years we'll begin outsourcing knitting to you, and if you do really well, one day you may get more tasks and finally be back on top:)
How does this work? What part of the configuration? Basically all files in/etc or? Any links?
I'm looking for something that will allow me to put a custom samba.conf on a "live" CD, this may be it. Alternatively, anyone know if it's possible to just mount the ISO, modify the samba.conf, and burn a CD - or what's the recommended approach?
What is it that you have problems running on different platforms? I have yet to see these fabled issues.
The JDK doesn't fuck things up - it's a class library and a compiler and that's basically it. What work arounds? If they occur fairly often it shouldn't be too hard to supply an example?
I live in Denmark. We have yet to see the first Tivo like appliance in the stores for average consumers (the closest we come is a Kiss Tech DVD player with HDD, but no TV tuner.. stupid). I wonder why? If there's a good market where people are willing to pay the price, why not sell to that market?
What about the other countries in Europe? Any of you get these sexy TV appliances?
It is fine to use apt, as long as it appears to the user that (s)he is only installing a simple, single program. You should check out OS X for the visual part. An application is represented by one icon, to delete the file, drag that icon to the bin. What happens "under the hood" doesn't matter - it could be a monolithic file, it could be a complex package hierarchy.
Do you think OSX is easier to use than Windows? Why?

Interesting story.. Sure that you're not the redneck who got visited by a city boy, "Pig Hogger"? :-)

Java-GTK is apparently also quite a mature set of bindings, though I haven't used them so I can't say for sure.
IBM's SWT is mature and has native UI bindings for an abundance of platforms, GTK2 included. That's a good place to start.
As I see it, the main benefit of Mono would be the ability to run MS apps on Linux in the future.
"Premature optimization is the root of all evil". DK.
Try these guys - sex appeal included!

All that matters to anti-Java zealots is speed. The list of benefits coming from using Java is too long to take the speed-only view seriously.
They probably cheat and use undocumented native OS calls.
Hopefully none of my clients are reading this.
You're known as FunkyRat to them!?
But how did you manage to also put it on his disk first?
Anyone know if this is as noisy as the PS2?

Their selection of colors is too limited. They don't get my financial support before they make a white cover for the mini
That's what all the guys with little harddisks say..
Anyone have experience with the SX270 noise levels, P4 vs. Celeron fex.
TIA.

ISingleton.getInstance().welcome("overlord");
OR you can give their community website a good old fashioned slashdotting!
Well.. more inherently in the OpenSource, well THAT OS should have been OperatingSystem..
You get the point
