mod_perl 2.0 hasn't been released. RC1 of MP2 has been released. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to count on MP2's formal release making slashdot's main page.
T:V has a few aces up it's sleeve that T2 didn't have. The Current Producer of the game is Chris Mahnken (aka Thrax Panda) someone who unlike DaveG of fucking up t2 fame actually has real honest to goodness competition experience with Tribes. Irrational also hired Michael Johnston, (aka KineticPoet) a well know community member and modder, who also has a ton of competition experience. Neither of those guys liked T2 base.
Both of them post with some regularity on TribalWar and in in the Tribes On Topic Forum. If you want to stay up to date with what's going on in Tribes land, that forum (tot, not general) is a very good source of information and discussion (and flames)
they are. There is a brief shot of them in the stuff that the tacked onto the end of FOTW a few months ago. Basically, the shot is merry and pipping climbing a tree looking back over their shoulders, then the tree blinks.
Personally, if you want to sift through all the shite commercials and just look at the cool stuff, you might as well just got to the boards screening room ( http://www.boardsmag.com/screeningroom/ ). They seem to have an eye out for cool shit. take the recently posted Playgroup music video. http://www.boardsmag.com/screeningroom/musicvideos/192/
they run mod_perl to boot. oh yeah, and i work there.
well, the master servers, auth servers, and IRC servers for T2 are run by WON.net. The only thing that isn't is irc.dynamix.com, which from what i understand is pretty much bytor's baby.
I seem to recall an old 2600 that had an article about running a secure, non-public IRC server for friends or whatever. bascially, what it amounted to was a box running no public service except ssh, that people logged into. or it was a dual homed host that was attached to another network (non-internet) running ircd.
It obviously wasn't an open system, and you have to trust the people you are giving accounts to.
there is a nice freeware daemon called glftpd, available from www.glftpd.org. It's mostly used by warez kiddies i think, judging by it's feature list, and it's not open source, but you might want to have a look at it anyway.
i read this on friday when it was posted to bugtraq and the story of their.jp box getting cracked should be enough to scare most slashdot readers i think.
To my knowledge, there's not a single competitive FPS out there with a strong observer system that would be well-suited to television.
Check this out. http://www.gamecaster.com/promo.html
I'm not sure how integrated it is to the Vengeance Engine (mod of the unreal engine), but it is pretty impressive.

Win32 box! 1.3.6 has been completely stable for two months now on this box.
How did you get a Win32 Box to stay up for two whole months? This must be some sort of record.
Packetstorm's new Home. Just a splash page so far but i'm sure some of you, like me, will want to bookmark this. Courtesy of HackerNews.com
